'We can rise to the challenge'

BBC News27-03-2025

Cliftonville manager Jim Magilton says he expects his side to "rise to the challenge" when they face Ards in the first of the weekend's Irish Cup semi-finals at Windsor Park on Friday night. The Reds are defending the trophy they won for the first time since 1979 by beating Linfield in last year's decider and last month the north Belfast club added the BetMcLean Cup to their silverware cabinet. Ards have defeated Premiership opponents in the form of Ballymena United and Loughgall on their way to reaching the last four of the competition and are on a run of four consecutive wins in the Championship."They're winning games, they're very confident. We face a huge challenge, one that we're going to rise to," Magilton told BBC Sport NI."We know how confident a group they are. Winning games of football just breeds confidence."We recognise their strengths and we need to exploit whatever weaknesses are in their team. We're very determined to defend the Irish Cup."The teams met earlier in the season in the first round of the County Antrim Shield in September, the Reds only advancing courtesy of a 9-8 penalty shootout success after the game ended 0-0."You look at Ards' record in the cup competitions this year, we played them here and they were so unlucky not to go through," reflected the Reds boss."They've had two major scalps in the Irish Cup and we're expecting a really tough game. They're very well organised, well coached, they've got players who can hurt you. "They have certainly earned the right to play in an Irish Cup semi-final with a goal of reaching an Irish Cup final very much in their sights and we have to stand up and be counted."Magilton believes his squad includes the kind of players who relish the opportunity of performing on the big occasions."The best players take the pressure on board. They love it, they love that stage, they want it, they crave it."They now have an opportunity to present themselves again and we'll see what happens," he added.

Liverpool stars make feelings clear on Alexander-Arnold after Madrid unveiling

Trent Alexander-Arnold was officially unveiled as Real Madrid's newest player on Thursday, though the right-back raised eyebrows back at his former club Liverpool Trent Alexander-Arnold's former Liverpool team-mates appear to approve of his move to Real Madrid. The England international has decided to head to the Bernabeu on a free transfer from the Reds. Alexander-Arnold's decision drew intense criticism from Liverpool fans and he was booed in his final few games for the club. Madrid have paid a £10million fee in order to have Alexander-Arnold released from his contract early. ‌ That means he will be able to feature in their Club World Cup campaign. The right-back was officially unveiled by the La Liga giants on Thursday, taking to the podium to speak in fluent Spanish. ‌ His ability to speak the language of his new country raised eyebrows among Reds fans. Alexander-Arnold was joined at the announcement by members of his family, as well as Madrid's top brass. They are not the only ones supporting his decision to leave his boyhood team for pastures new though. Alexander-Arnold celebrated his unveiling at Madrid by posting an image on Instagram of himself and his family while wearing his new club's kit. The caption on the post read: "Family is everything." Alexander-Arnold received overwhelming support from his former team-mates at Anfield following the post. It received more than 1.8 million likes on Instagram, including from current Liverpool stars including Federico Chiesa, Andy Robertson, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Luis Diaz and Tyler Morton. Former Reds stars Roberto Firmino, Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana also liked the post by Alexander-Arnold. He was also welcomed by his new team-mates, with Jude Bellingham leaving a white love heart emoji as his comment on the post. ‌ Alexander-Arnold is looking forward to starting the next chapter of his career. He said at his announcement: 'It wasn't a question of whether to go or not. I always knew that if I ever left Liverpool, it would be to join Real Madrid. "There came a time when I had to decide whether to leave or stay, and it wasn't easy. I'd been there for so long that it wasn't easy. There comes a time when you have to make a decision, and for me, this was the right one. 'I was there for so long. The club gave me the opportunity to achieve all my dreams. I'm grateful to them and will always be with them. Having achieved everything I've accomplished at my age, I'm ready to move on. ‌ "This opportunity came along and I took it. I think it's a good decision. I've been lucky to play for the biggest team in England and now I'm at the biggest in Spain. Both have won many trophies and dominated their leagues. It's an honour to represent both of them. "At both clubs, you're expected to win and perform well; there are many similarities. At Liverpool, you were expected to win trophies and it's the same here. That's what's demanded of you. The fans are used to it and we have to deliver."

Kwame Poku to Rangers route clears as Birmingham 'move on'

The 24-year-old is a free agent this summer after his Peterborough United contract expired at the end of the season. Rangers have an interest in the Ghanaian winger alongside a host of clubs, including early signal of intent from Birmingham. However, it has now emerged that Birmingham chiefs have become frustrated over the delay to finalise a deal for Poku. According to Birmingham Live, Birmingham officials are now assessing other targets after being forced to wait on a decision from the player and his representatives. It's claimed Poku is mulling over his options with a potential move abroad over the summer. Read more: According to the report, Birmingham look to have pulled out of the race to sign Poku, with recruitment staff pursuing alternative wingers available for their return to the Championship next season. Clubs in France and Germany are also thought to be keen to land Poku this summer. Peterborough would be entitled to a tribunal fee for the winger whom they paid Colchester United an initial £250,000 for at the age of 19. Peterborough recently confirmed that Poku would not sign a new deal with the club and move on from the London Road stadium this summer. Speaking on his own podcast, Darragh MacAnthony, Peterborough's chairman, said: "Kwame probably won't go to the Premier League straight away, but he will get a high-end Championship club. He will be a Premier League star in the future and that next move will probably cost £30 million.'

Super Ted or Superman? Hill's ‘different game' key for Bath in Premiership final

Is it a bird or a plane? No, it's probably 'SuperTed'. If Bath win this year's Premiership final the chances are their rangy, athletic flanker Ted Hill will have played a prominent role. This week his captain, Ben Spencer, called him a 'freak' and various seasoned judges have compared him with illustrious former back-rowers ranging from Kieran Read and Jerome Kaino to Pierre Spies and Tom Croft. During this year's Six Nations Maro Itoje suggested similarities between the 26-year-old and 'Captain America or Superman' and suggested he was 'a man carved out of Greek stone'. Bath's head coach, Johann van Graan, believes likewise. 'I think he's one of the best players in the league and his athletic ability is special. There's not a lot he can't do, really.' So you might have expected this standout performer – even the backs agree he is the quickest member of Bath's talented squad – to have represented England on multiple occasions since his debut off the bench against Japan in 2019. In fact he has just four caps, all as a replacement and totalling 49 minutes, and has yet to start a Test after six years of national-squad involvement. Injuries and the intense competition for back-row places have both played their part but Hill's family – and particularly his mum, Jan – have long since felt their boy deserves more of a chance. As Hill says: 'It's beyond fair to say they think I should have started for England before now. But that's parents, isn't it? They're my biggest supporters and seeing it from their point of view is sometimes difficult. They're always more emotional about it than I am.' Hill's own view, with England due to tour Argentina and the United States next month, is that he is better off focusing on things he can control. 'I've always been of the mindset that coaches have their opinions. Who they like, who they don't like. I feel like I do have a different game to a lot of the 6s in the country but I'm in a position where there is more depth than anywhere else. That's a blessing for England but it can be a curse for an individual.' Hill could not have done much more to nudge the selectors this year. He even managed to catch the incredibly swift Adam Radwan last month and pulled off another remarkable cover tackle to stop the rampaging Kalaveti Ravouvou in Bath's semi-final win over Bristol. The startled gasps from the commentary box, though, have been prompting some wry amusement in the Hill family. 'It's something my mum and dad find funny. 'Have they only just found out that you're quick?'' Allied to his defensive work rate and lineout ability, the former Worcester captain also has a a thoughtful side: the son of a police officer and an art teacher, he was a choirboy in Worcester Cathedral and is fascinated by history. Off the field he is not the world's fastest driver – 'My missus always says to me: 'Why are you in the slow lane, why can't you speed up a bit?'' – but things are very different on the field. 'I've definitely got a competitive, stubborn edge to me. I think I should be playing and involved in the England stuff. You've got to have that confidence that you're better than this or that person. But you've also got to have the realism to understand that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. 'What will be will be. If they pick me they pick me. If they don't I'm not going to be sitting in the corner crying about it. Luckily I've got great people around me. I don't necessarily have to bank on one person's opinion to make me happy. I'm in a good spot with that.' As Van Graan said this week: 'I predict somebody will go 8-0, or 4-4, on the bench at some stage.' For the time being, though, the 6ft 5in Hill is having to settle for burning off his mates in training – 'I've been racing Alfie Barbeary but he's been having a 10-metre head start' – before the big showdown with Leicester. 'The biggest thing is how quickly we can find some momentum and get that feeling where we look at each other and go: 'We're here now, we're in it.' When we get on that level of togetherness we feel like we're tough to beat.'
