Surplus food initiative launches city fridge
A community surplus food initiative has launched a city fridge, with the aim to reduce food waste by redistribution.
HeartyEarth community celebrated the start of Oxford City Fridge at the Botley Road side of the Westgate Hotel on 7 March.
Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran and the Lord Mayor of Oxford Mike Rowley cut the ceremonial ribbon and about 50kg of food was given away.
From 17 March between 10:00 GMT and 22:00 GMT, residents will be able to take away free food, collected daily from the Oxford Food Hub and Sofea charity.
HeartyEarth founder Sâmân Jamshidifardsaid it was "important to note we focus on surplus of surplus".
"What is left after all the other charities, foodbanks and others have taken everything they need or can save, by taking food from our space, you are helping to [reduce food waste].
"The generous owners of the Westgate Hotel, Andy, Steve and Phil Jones, are very happy to provide the space for the community efforts."
Two HeartyEarth art installation can also be found in the space.
Along with his volunteers, he also provides free curry meals across the city.
He added that he saw Oxford City Fridge "as an organic extension of Oxford City Larder, Jericho Pantry, Hinksey Park Larder and the SurplusCurry project".
Mr Jamshidifardsaid thanked Oxford independent businesses that back the initiative such as The Flower Shop, Kennington Flooring, Fishtail Lounge & Bar, Dosa Park restaurant and Happy Cakes.
Other guests to the launch included councillors Susanna Pressel and Lois Muddiman.

Child survivor of Gaza family strike heads to Italy
A 10-year-old Palestinian boy who survived an Israeli air strike in Gaza last month which killed his father and nine siblings was due to arrive in Italy Wednesday for treatment. Adam and his mother, paediatrician Alaa al-Najjar, were due to fly to Milan in northern Italy on Wednesday evening alongside his aunt and four cousins, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said. "Adam will arrive in Milan and will be admitted to the Niguarda (hospital), because he has multiple fractures and he will be treated there," Tajani told Rtl radio. A plane carrying Palestinians in need of medical care is scheduled to land at 7:30 pm (1730 GMT) at Milan's Linate airport, according to the foreign ministry. Adam had a hand amputated and suffered severe burns across his body following the strike on the family house in the city of Khan Yunis on May 23. His mother was at work when the bomb hit the house, killing nine of her children and injuring Adam and his father, doctor Hamdi al-Najjar, who died last week. Al-Najjar, who ran to the house to find her children charred beyond recognition, told Italy's Repubblica daily: "I remember everything. Every detail, every minute, every scream." "But when I remember it's too painful, so I try to keep my mind focused entirely on Adam," she said in an interview published Wednesday ahead of their arrival. Asked by his mother during the interview to describe his hopes, Adam said he wanted to "live in a beautiful place". "A beautiful place is a place where there are no bombs. In a beautiful place the houses are not broken and I go to school," he said, according to La Repubblica. "Schools have desks, the kids study their lessons but then they go play in the courtyard and nobody dies. "A beautiful place is where they operate on my arm and my arm works again. In a beautiful place my mother is not sad. They told me that Italy is a beautiful place." Al-Najjar said she has packed the Koran, their documents and Adam's clothes. "I am heartbroken. I am leaving behind everything that was important to me. My husband, my children, the hospital where I worked, my job, my patients," she said. "People are dying of hunger. If not of hunger, of bombs. We would just like to live in peace," she told the daily. The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says at least 54,981 people, the majority civilians, have been killed in the territory since the start of the war. Spain gradually restoring power after outage on Canaries' La Palma
MADRID (Reuters) -Spain's grid operator, Redeia, said on Tuesday it was gradually restoring power on La Palma after the Canary island suffered a blackout. The power cut on the archipelago's third-smallest island was caused by the failure of a generator at the Los Guinchos power plant in eastern La Palma, the regional government said in a statement, citing utility company Endesa. The outage follows a mass blackout across most of Spain and Portugal on April 28 that caused gridlock across cities and left thousands of people stranded on trains or stuck in elevators. The Canary blackout occurred at 5:30 p.m. (1630 GMT), RTVE reported. Redeia said it had reestablished 6.2 megawatts on La Palma by 7:10 p.m.

At least 4 missing after multiple explosions and fires reported on cargo ship off India's Kerala coast
At least four crew members were missing and five others injured after fires broke out and explosions heard aboard a Singapore‑flagged container ship off the coast of India's southern state of Kerala. The incident occurred around 10.30 am local time (5.00 am GMT) on Monday aboard the MV Wan Hai 503, a 270‑metre cargo vessel travelling from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Mumbai, India's commercial capital. The ship was located roughly 130 nautical miles (240km) west of Beypore, a port town in the southern state of Kerala, when explosions were reported from below deck, prompting a large-scale rescue operation by the Indian Navy and coast guard. Eighteen crew members initially abandoned the ship into life rafts. Defence officials confirmed that the Indian Navy and Coast Guard coordinated to rescue all 18 from the sea.
