Son of tourist killed in road crash says 'we've a lot to learn from the Irish'
The family of a Canadian woman who was killed in a road traffic collision while on holiday in Ireland has thanked the Irish public for the 'kindness' shown to them in the wake of the tragedy.
Helen Valks, 73, was cycling on the L3180 at Toonagh in Tulla, Co Clare, when she was struck by a tractor at around 12.45pm on Saturday, May 24.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was taken to University Hospital Limerick for a postmortem examination.
Helen, who worked as nurse until until retirement in 2013, was cycling across Ireland with her husband Henry 'Henk' Valks, 77, when the tragic incident occurred.
Following the tragedy, Helen's children Jeff and Rachel travelled to Ireland to be by their father's side. The family have said they have been left "overwhelmed" by the kindness and generosity shown to them by the Irish public as they grieved Helen's death.
In a message shared on his mother's Facebook page, Jeff wrote: "I just wanted to thank you all for the kind messages to dad and the rest of us. The story became national news here, and the response—well, it's truly beyond words.
"The random acts of kindness and compassion from the Irish people we've met in the last few days has left us in tears more times than we care to count.
"Everyone wants to help in some way, and the generosity has been overwhelming."
Jeff spoke to Canada's national public broadcaster, CBC Radio, to discuss his mother's legacy and share stories of the compassion shown to them by the people they met in Ireland in the wake of the tragedy.
"My joke with the Irish was [that] as Canadians, we all think we're really polite and caring people, but we've got a lot to learn from the Irish," Jeff said.
"From the minute it happened to the minute my sister Rachel and my brother-in-law Kevin got there, the hotel staff made sure that my dad wasn't alone. He had everything he needed.
"When we walked in the door they knew our names. They had tears in their eyes, they were giving us hugs.
"We had an officer assigned to us from the Gardai, his name is Rob and he grieved with us, and he was with us the whole way.
"His parents were the same age as my parents, so he had a bit of a kinship about that, and everywhere you went, somebody wanted to do something for you."
Jeff went on to share a story of a kind-hearted construction worker who offered to help the family as they mourned Helen's death.
He said: "There was a construction worker as we were walking into a funeral home, and I've worked in construction briefly, and I just kind of laughed and said, 'hey, it's a good day to be outside', and it's pouring rain, so he kind of laughs, and says, 'how's your day going?'.
"And I told him the story very briefly, and I started to choke up, and he started to choke up - and this is just a random construction worker laying bricks on the street - and he stopped in his tracks and said, 'what can I do for you? Can I do anything for you?' What do you need?'.
"Friends here in Canada who have family in Ireland were offering us ride places. It was just above and beyond."
Jeff continued: "The Bunratty Manor where we were staying, the host Noel Wallace, he was always by our sides. Breakfast, dinner, 'What do you need? What can I get for you?' A laugh, a hug, whatever he could do.
"And that was true of everywhere we went in Ireland. It was unbelievable. It brought my family and my father to tears, myself included, many, many times.
John shared a story of a touching gesture shown to them by a bus driver who had learned of the family's tragedy.
"When we were taking the bus back to Ireland, we had one night in Ireland before the flight, and the driver of that shuttle bus got wind of it," Jeff recalled.
"This is the public shuttle bus, and he kind of got wind of our story, and he had tears in his eyes and he said, 'you give me your cell phone number, here's mine, I will pick you up, and I will personally bring you to the airport in the morning anytime you want'.
"And sure enough, there he was five minutes before we said we needed to be out, he was right there, ready to go. It was just unbelievable."
Jeff accompanied his mother Helen's body back to Canada and her funeral is due to be held at Holy Angels' Church inSt. Thomas, Ontario at 1pm on Friday.

Ryanair passengers injured on 'dangerous' flight after plane hits 'supercell'
Ryanair passengers were left shaken last night after a flight with 185 people on board was forced to make an emergency landing in Germany during a violent thunderstorm. German Authorities said nine people, including a two-year-old child and a crew member, were injured on the plane which had departed Berlin and was en route to Milan. Flight FR8 encountered extreme turbulence over southern Germany and was battered by a severe storm which experts believe was a "supercell" - a highly dangerous rotating thunderstorm. Supercells can span up to 50km across, with tornado-like winds inside. Flightradar24 data shows the jet abruptly changed course mid-flight, veering south to Memmingen as the situation escalated. The dangerous conditions prompted the pilot to abandon the original flight path and divert to Memmingen Airport in Bavaria, where an emergency landing was made. One terrified passenger described the scenes on board as "chaotic and dangerous". Among the nine injured was a toddler who sustained bruising, another woman who suffered a head injury and one person who was treated for back injuries. Three were taken to hospital and emergency services rushed to the aircraft once it landed. The German weather service had issued warnings for severe storms across the region, with threats of hail and storm gusts. In the nearby city of Ulm, a tornado ripped the roofs off houses in multiple streets, Mirror UK reports. The flight was grounded after landing and unable to continue due to weather-related restrictions. Irish airline Ryanair arranged buses to help passengers complete their journey to Milan. German police and Ryanair are expected to release statements today. UAE Minister issues statement after extradition of Kinahan chief Sean McGovern
'This positive development is further evidence of the excellent criminal justice cooperation between the governments of the UAE and Ireland' McGovern was flown by the Irish Air Corps from Dubai and brought to court in Dublin under Garda escort The minister for justice in the United Arab Emirates has hailed the police forces of both countries following the recent extradition of Kinahan chief Sean McGovern to Ireland. Abdullah bin Sultan Al Nuaimi and Minister of Justice Jim O'Callaghan spoke by phone following the extradition of the Irish national, who is accused of murder and involvement in a criminal organisation. It followed a decision issued by the Dubai Court of Cassation after McGovern had spent eight months in prison in Dubai. According to a statement issued by the UAE, both ministers emphasised that the extradition underscores a firm and ongoing joint commitment to upholding the rule of law and fostering international cooperation. 'It reflects the strong relationship between the UAE and Ireland, our continued collaboration in the pursuit of international justice and a shared determination to ensure that justice is served,' the statement reads. 'This positive development is further evidence of the excellent criminal justice cooperation between the governments of the UAE and Ireland and highlights our joint dedication to ensuring that criminal prosecutions may be brought against those who attempt to evade justice.' Both ministers commended the Dubai Police and gardai 'for their ongoing engagement and commitment to enhancing police-to-police cooperation, recognising their vital role in joint efforts to combat the global threat of organised crime'. 'The two sides emphasised the importance of continued collaboration and joint initiatives between their respective police agencies to promote security, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard justice across borders.' McGovern was flown by the Irish Air Corps from Dubai and brought to court in Dublin under Garda escort Senior Kinahan gang member McGovern is back in Ireland after what has been described as a 'complicated and secretive' extradition process. Gardaí believed he was being returned home on a couple of other occasions in recent months, only for legal issues to arise at the last minute. The 39-year-old Dubliner is one of cartel leader Daniel Kinahan's closest confidants. The leadership of the Kinahan cartel, including Daniel, his father Christy Sr and brother Christopher Jr, remain in Dubai. The Kinahans are 'not panicking' over McGovern's extradition and 'have no plans to flee Dubai', according to garda intelligence. 'They've no plans to flee, and if they did, we would be able to find them because of international co-operation,' a source said. Sean McGovern News in 90 Seconds - 5th June 2025 Gardaí are awaiting a direction from the DPP on whether Daniel Kinahan and other members of his family should face a range of criminal charges, including leadership of an organised crime gang. The state prosecutor has been considering an extensive garda file on Daniel Kinahan and other senior cartel members for two years. 'It could be a good sign there is no direction yet. It means the DPP is very thoroughly looking at it,' the source said. As first reported in the Sunday World last year, the proposed extradition of McGovern was seen as a 'test case' for plans to eventually attempt to return Daniel Kinahan to Ireland to face charges. The source pointed out that navigating the extradition process for McGovern would prove 'very helpful' if gardaí make attempts to extradite Daniel Kinahan. 'The extradition process for Sean McGovern was challenging. Due process had to take place, which meant a lot of legal issues had to be overcome,' the source said. A good relationship was developed with authorities in the United Arab Emirates and there was a significant amount of help from Interpol on this case too, but it was a secretive process and very different to our own.' It is understood gardaí did not receive regular updates on developments in Dubai in relation to McGovern's planned extradition and instead 'had to trust the process'. Meanwhile, the father-of-two's journey home on a military aircraft that made a number of stops en route passed off without incident. McGovern's partner and the mother of his two children is expected to return to Ireland from Dubai. McGovern, formerly of Kildare Road, Crumlin, is the most senior member of the Kinahan crime group to be charged before the Irish courts. He appeared in the Special Criminal Court last Thursday evening, shortly after arriving in Ireland. He is charged with the murder of Noel Kirwan (62) at St Ronan's Drive, Clondalkin, Dublin, on December 22, 2016. Kirwan was shot dead as he sat in his car with his partner in the driveway of her home. He was not involved in the feud, but was targeted after being spotted beside Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch at a funeral. McGovern is also charged with directing a criminal organisation involved in the conspiracy to murder a rival gangster. The alleged offences were carried out as part of the Hutch-Kinahan feud, which claimed up to 18 lives in Ireland and abroad.
