DUI Wolfpack: St. Johns County deputies hunting down drunk drivers during weekend operation
Law enforcement officers are continuing efforts to educate the community about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol and any chemical or controlled substances, and Action News Jax was along for the ride.
It's all part of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office's DUI Wolfpack operation, conducted in partnership with the Florida Highway Patrol.
On Friday night, about 15 officers from the two agencies were out patrolling some of the busiest roadways in the county.
The 10-hour operation aims to reduce the risk of traffic accidents caused by DUI.

Action News Jax rode along with Corporal Alex Ellis, with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office DUI unit.
During that ride-along, we watched two traffic stops. One of which ended in a DUI arrest on North Ponce De Leon Boulevard in St. Augustine.
Corporal Ellis said they conduct these operations once a quarter, and the last time they did one, there were at least 10 DUI arrests.
'Unfortunately, Jacksonville's metro area is one of the deadliest places in the nation for impaired drivers,' said Ellis.
According to crash data from Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, last year there were 63 impaired driving crashes involving alcohol only in St. Johns County. So far this year, that number is 19.
Ellis said when they are out patrolling, they're looking for any traffic violations.
'We have skilled officers that through that, detect DUI drivers as well,' said Ellis.
Local authorities are reminding all drivers to stay responsible and never drink and drive.
The operation continues through 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

Spokane County replaces aging aircraft with $3.4M helicopter upgrade
This story was originally published on The Spokane County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) unveiled its new $3.4 million Bell 505 helicopter at Felts Field Wednesday afternoon. The new helicopter will replace two 55-year-old aircraft that have been retired from the force after decades of service, according to the sheriff's office. Spokane Valley Police Chief Dave Ellis noted his admiration for the upgrade. 'Its advanced technology will improve our ability to combat rising auto thefts and conduct safer operations, including searches for missing children, Alzheimer's patie nts, and outdoor recreationists,' Ellis said, according to SCSD. The helicopter can reach a top speed of 125 knots per hour (kts) and a hover ceiling of 14,450 feet, according to BellFlight. SCSO fully equipped the helicopter with upgraded technology such as thermal imaging cameras and a live-stream video feed. The sheriff's office received a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, a $200,000 state grant for the thermal imaging cameras, $1.6 million from Spokane County, and raised money from the sale of an older SCSO helicopter, according to The Spokesman-Review. 'It's unbelievable how clear of an image they can get if they wanted to do surveillance over somebody that was a really bad guy. They could fly over at 7,000 feet and read the license plate,' John Preston, retired LAPD officer, said, according to The Spokesman-Review.

Bicyclist killed in Osceola County hit-and-run crash; search for driver underway
The Brief A bicyclist was killed early Sunday in a hit-and-run crash at Pleasant Hill Road and Sun Cove Drive in Osceola County, according to FHP. The driver of a black Honda Accord fled the scene after striking the man, who was then hit again by another vehicle. ORLANDO, Fla. - A man riding a bicycle was killed early Sunday in a hit-and-run crash involving two vehicles at an intersection in Osceola County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened at the intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and Sun Cove Drive while both vehicles were traveling northbound around 5:30 a.m., troopers said. The bicyclist, identified only as an adult male, entered the intersection from the east and crossed into the path of a vehicle in the inside lane. Investigators said the unknown vehicle, described by witnesses as a newer model black Honda Accord, had a green light and struck the bicyclist. The impact threw the victim into the outside lane, where a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta also traveling northbound struck him a second time. The driver of the Jetta attempted to swerve but was unable to avoid the man, authorities said. The vehicle that initially struck the bicyclist fled the scene. The occupants of the Jetta were not injured and remained on scene to cooperate with authorities. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been confirmed by the medical examiner. Anyone with information about the crash or the fleeing vehicle is urged to contact the Florida Highway Patrol or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS. The crash remains under investigation.
