Big Al Ahly crowd, tight security for Club World Cup opener vs. Messi, Inter Miami

A sea of red descended on Hard Rock Stadium Saturday night for the highly anticipated Club World Cup opening match, as fans of Egyptian power Al Ahly traveled long distances to see their beloved Red Devils take on Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates. Although the game was being played 21 miles south of Inter Miami's home stadium, the crowd looked evenly divided. Al Ahly has 12 million Instagram followers and 30 of the 200 credentialed reporters were from Egyptian outlets. Michael and Sherina Zekri, natives of Egypt who moved the United States seven years ago, flew to Miami from Peoria, Arizona, with a group of 11 friends and relatives for the game. They are Messi fans but were rooting for Al Ahly. Other fans wore scarves that were half Inter Miami and half Al Ahly. The Red Devils fans roared when their starting lineup was announced: El Shenawy; Yasser, Dari, Hany; Ben Romdhane, Hamdy, Marawan, Trezeguet, Koka; Wessam. Inter Miami's Starting XI included: goalkeeper Oscar Ustari; center back Toto Aviles, right back Ian Fray, left back Noah Allen, center back Maxi Falcon; midfielder Sergio Busquets, midfielder Telasco Segovia, midfielder Fede Redondo; winger Tadeo Allende; forward Luis Suarez; and Messi, the captain. Jordi Alba, Gonzalo Lujan and Yannick Bright sat out with injuries. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, fresh off his knighthood in England, got a loud ovation when he was shown on the jumbo screen. Despite a roster that includes the Argentine eight-time Ballon d' Or winner, Inter Miami is the underdog in Group A, which includes Al Ahly, 30-time Portuguese champion Porto and Palmeiras of Brazil, a perennial regional champion that features Chelsea-bound teen phenom Estavao. The top two teams in each group advance to the Round of 16. Al Ahly is the highest-ranked African team in the world, a team that won that region's Champions League three of the past four years and has racked up 155 trophies over its 118-year history. Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who was hired last month, makes his Al Ahly debut Saturday. Meanwhile, there is pressure on Messi and Inter Miami to prove that an MLS team can compete with some of the most storied clubs in the world. It will not be easy, as MLS has restrictive roster and salary rules, and Miami is in its infancy, in its sixth season, while Al Ahly was founded in 1907. Security was extremely tight for the match, which was to be expected after the dangerous gate-crashing debacle at the Copa America final between Colombia and Argentina at Hard Rock Stadium last summer. This time, there was a double-ringed perimeter around the stadium grounds. Fans without tickets who arrived at the first checkpoint by foot or car were turned away. Once inside the first ring, fans then had to go through a second security checkpoint at the stadium gates. The game was broadcast on TBS and livestreamed on

Chris Pollard takes two key Duke players with him to Virginia

Chris Pollard takes two key Duke players with him to Virginia Not a great start to the post-Chris Pollard era of Duke Blue Devils baseball. Star player AJ Gracia and Kyle Johnson are both heading to Virginia to join Pollard with the Cavaliers. It stings when you lose any player to the transfer portal, but it feels like a double dose when they go to a fellow ACC rival. Gracia hit 15 home runs this past season and drove in 54 runs while batting .293 and drew 57 walks. Last season, he ended the year with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs. He was a career .299 batter for the Blue Devils, and now he takes his talents to Charlottesville. Johnson is a Virginia native and will return to his home state with the Cavaliers. The two-way player finished the year 4-4 with 43 strikeouts to 26 walks. His ERA was a bit high at 7.19. He added four home runs and 19 RBIs as a hitter for Duke this past season. Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball reported the news of Gracia and Johnson following Pollard. The Blue Devils have yet to name a replacement for Pollard as the new head coach of Duke baseball, but many believe it will be Josh Jordan, who is currently the assistant coach at LSU. He was a long-time assistant under Pollard with the Blue Devils from 2012 to 2022. He helped LSU win a national championship, and many hope he will bring that level of aspiration to Durham.

Indiana Fever laud praise upon waived guard Aari McDonald

Indiana Fever laud praise upon waived guard Aari McDonald With the announcement of the return of both Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham on Friday, the Indiana Fever have subsequently waived guard Aari McDonald from her hardship contract in order to comply with the WNBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement. While the roster cut was needed to bring back Clark and Cunningham from injury, Fever head coach Stephanie White applauded the emergency hardship guard for her ability to provide stability to the roster while it was shorthanded. "She's going to find a spot. I don't think that's a debate right now. She's been at the ultimate pro," White said. "She came in ready to go. She had watched such a large amount of film just on her flight in here that you could tell already her high IQ. She's a dog, and we're going to miss her, certainly. What she brought to the table for us, and being able to come in at the point guard position and just really impact us right away was huge." In her three games of action for the Fever, McDonald averaged 11.0 points on 42.9% from the field, 37.5% from 3-point territory, and 69.2% from the free-throw line on 25:18 of playing time per game. In additon to her scoring touch, she also averaged 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals, 1.3 rebounds, and 0.3 blocks per contest. In order to comply with the league's CBA rules, McDonald's contract will be automatically terminated once the Fever reach 10 game-available players on their roster.
