Additional lane closures announced for Interstate 696 in Oakland County

CBS News18-04-2025

Additional lane closures will begin Monday on Interstate 696 in Oakland County as the Michigan Department of Transportation continues work along the freeway.
Starting 7 a.m. Monday, and continuing through late July, westbound I-696 will be limited to two lanes from Southfield Road to Lahser Road because of median work.
This is in addition to a planned closure of westbound I-696 between I-75 to M-10 that will be in effect from May 9 to May 19. The closure will allow the demolition of the Church Street plaza bridge, including the breakup of 170 concrete beams.
The temporary closure of westbound I-696 will result in a detour via I-75, M-8 (Davison Freeway) and M-10 (Lodge Freeway). There will also be a local westbound lane open with access to Bermuda Street, M-1 (Woodward Avenue) and Coolidge Highway.
The demolition of the Church Street plaza bridge on the east side begins May 1. But the eastbound section of I-696 in that area is already closed.
The final phase of the Restore the Reuther project involves rebuilding I-696 in 2025-2026, while in 2027, I-696 will have major road work done between I-75 and Dequindre Road.

696 construction: Bridge demolition finishes early, road re-opens

OAK PARK, MICH (Fox 2) - Originally set to be closed through Monday, the section of I-696 from I-75 to M-10 re-opened Saturday when crews finished work two days early. The Church Street bridge demolition began May 9. The demolition is ongoing on the eastbound side of the road, which will be closed through late 2026, but the westbound side has re-opened. During the closure, crews also did repair work on bridges west of the Church Street plaza. Eastbound 696 was closed in early March for a two-year project to rebuild both sides of the freeway. During the next 24 months, traffic on 696 will only go west. Crews are rebuilding the eastbound side of the highway first before shifting to the westbound side. When they make that move, westbound traffic will be diverted to the eastbound lanes. The Source FOX 2 spoke with the Michigan Department of Transportation for details on the road construction.

Section of Interstate 696 in Oakland County reopens earlier than expected

A portion of westbound Interstate 696 in Oakland County is back open, two days earlier than expected, after crews finished work on a demolition project. A planned closure of westbound I-696 between Interstate 75 and M-10 started on May 9 and was expected to last through May 19. On Saturday, the Michigan Department of Transportation said it was reopened to the public. The closure allowed demolition crews to take down the Church Street plaza bridge, including the breakup of 170 concrete beams. Officials said crews also did repair work on bridges west of the Church Street plaza. Eastbound I-696 from Lahser Road to I-75 will be completely closed until late next year as part of the "Restore the Reuther" project. State officials say the project is expected to wrap up in the fall of 2027.
