Germany is to assist Ukraine in the production of long-range weapons, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday, as he hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin for the first time since taking office earlier this month.
'We want to enable long-range weapons. We also want to enable joint production,' Merz said at a press conference in the German capital, promising further support for Kiev as efforts to secure a ceasefire appear to flounder.
Merz said the German and Ukrainian defence ministers were to sign a letter of intent on the 'procurement of long-range weapons systems from Ukrainian production.' The move represents 'the start of a new form of military-industrial co-operation' between Germany and Ukraine, 'which has great potential,' the chancellor said.
Ukraine, which has been fighting off a full-scale Russian invasion for more than three years, is in need of missiles that can attack Russian airfields and supply lines deep inside Russian territory.
The question of whether Ukraine's allies should supply Kiev with long-range arms has been highly controversial in recent years, with Merz's predecessor Olaf Scholz having consistently opposed deliveries of German-made Taurus cruise missiles amid warnings that the move would escalate tensions with Moscow.
Ukraine is still hoping for the arms, Zelensky made clear during the press conference.
'Of course we need them, of course we will discuss this issue,' Zelensky said.

Ukraine, Russia agree to peace talks as they trade huge blows

dpa Moscow/Kiev Ukraine has agreed to a Russian proposal for a further round of direct peace talks starting on Monday, even as both countries carried out massive strikes on each other. 'On Monday, our delegation will be led by [Defence Minister] Rustem Umerov,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on the platform X on Sunday, calling for talks at a high level to ensure lasting peace. Like the first round a fortnight ago, the meeting is to take place in Istanbul. Zelensky, laying out Ukraine's position at the talks, called for a complete and unconditional ceasefire, the release of prisoners and the return of abducted children. The second round of talks, announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday, will come a day after both sides appeared to have carried out particularly stinging attacks. Russia suffered an apparent coordinated attempt to disrupt railway lines as well as drone attacks on four military airfields, while Ukraine said Russia had hit a military training unit, killing 12, and damaged critical infrastructure in the city of Zaporizhzhya. At least seven people were killed and some 70 injured when two bridges collapsed in two Russian regions bordering Ukraine, local officials said on Sunday. While Ukraine has so far not commented on the reports, the military intelligence service in Kiev said a Russian freight train carrying military supplies from the Ukrainian mainland to Crimea was blown up early on Saturday in a Russian-occupied part of the south-eastern region of Zaporizhzhya. Russian investigators have said the overnight collapse of the two bridges near the border with Ukraine was caused by 'acts of terrorism,' according to the Interfax news agency. In Bryansk, Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed reports of an explosion on a bridge, about 80 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. The train en route from Klimovo to Moscow had been carrying 388 people, Bogomaz said on state television. A section of the bridge collapsed and then fell onto a train passing underneath, state-run Russian news agency TASS reported. The conductor of the train was among those killed, TASS added.

South Korea exports dip amid trade tensions

Agencies South Korea's exports edged down slightly in May, dropping for the first time in four months, led by a decline in shipments to the United States and China due to global trade conflict triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs. Exports from Asia's fourth-largest economy, an early bellwether for global trade, declined 1.3% from the same month last year to $57.27 billion, government data showed on Sunday. The first decline since January followed rises as strong chip sales had offset downward pressure from Trump's tariff threats. The May decline, however, was milder than the 2.7% fall forecast in a Reuters poll of economists. On a working-day adjusted basis, exports in fact rose 1.0%. China and the United States agreed in mid-May to a 90-day truce, significantly unwinding their tariffs on each other, after months of back-and-forth retaliatory measures, but Trump on Friday accused Beijing of violating the agreement and threatened to take tougher action. He also said he would double global tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50%. Trump's 'reciprocal tariffs,' including 25% duties on South Korea, are on a 90Volkswagen flags 'massive' US investments and says tariff talks constructive Volkswagen wants to make more big investments in the United States, CEO Oliver Blume said in an interview with a German newspaper on Friday, adding that tariff talks with the U.S. government were 'fair' and 'constructive'. Several foreign companies have announced U.S. investments in response to President Donald Trump's import tariffs, but German carmakers have been more cautious about committing more resources to what is their biggest export Audi brand, which has no production in the United States, is planning to produce some models in there, although the brand has said that the plan pre-dates the Trump administration. 'So far, we have had absolutely fair, constructive discussions,' Blume told Sueddeutsche Zeitung. 'I was in Washington myself and we have been in regular dialogue ever since.'
