After the match, MLS followed with a historic statement regarding IMCF's star forward.
Messi, 37, recorded two goals and three assists against Columbus, bringing his season totals to 10 goals and six assists in just 13 appearances in league play.
Following another historic performance on Wednesday in a 4-2 win against Montreal, the Argentina star has tallied four goals and four assists this week alone.
His five goal contributions against the Crew put the 2022 World Cup winner among a rare group of players to achieve such a prolific output in a single match.

Only two other players in MLS history have recorded at least two goals and three assists in a match. Alex Pineda Chacon did it for the Miami Fusion in 2001 and Diego Rossi did it for Los Angeles FC in 2018.
Messi had a match of six goal contributions (one goal, five assists) in 2024. He joined Rossi as the only players to notch multiple games of at least five goal contributions in an MLS career, according to a statement released by the MLS public relations account.
The reigning MLS MVP is making a strong case for a repeat trophy. He is now tied for third in the Golden Boot race with 10 goals. His six assists are tied for 10th, but two off the lead.

Messi's uptick in form has come at a crucial time for Inter Miami, which snapped out of a funk of one win in seven games coming into this historic week.
The Herons leapfrogged Columbus up to third place in the Eastern Conference standings ahead of the June international break, for which Messi has been named to the initial Argentina roster.
When he returns to IMCF, the team will embark on its inaugural Club World Cup journey, which begins on June 14 against Egyptian champion Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium.

File Photo by Laura Cavanaugh/UPI | License Photo June 3 (UPI) -- Japanese sports icon Shigeo Nagashima, known as the country's "Mr. Pro Baseball," died from pneumonia Tuesday, Tokyo's Yomiuri Giants announced. He was 89. The Giants said Nagashima died at 6:39 a.m. local time Tuesday at a hospital in Tokyo. The team plans to establish a memorial Wednesday and Thursday in the main square of Giants Town Stadium. "We offer our heartfelt condolences," the Giants said in a statement. Nagashima, who played third base, signed his first professional contract in 1957. He helped the Giants win nine-consecutive Japan Series titles from 1965 to 1973, while scooping up batting titles and MVP awards. He hit .305 with 2,471 hits and 444 home runs over his 17-year playing career, and he was inducted into Japan's Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988. Several MLB clubs attempted to lure Nagashima to the United States, but were unable to purchase his contract. He later became the Giants' manager and then worked as a TV commentator, but eventually returned to the dugout to help the Giants win two Japan Series crowns. He was made the Giants' lifetime honorary manager because of his dugout success. "Hearing the tragic news, I cannot find words to express my feelings," Giants owner Toshikazu Yamaguchi said in a statement issued to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper. "In my childhood, the Giants meant a team with Mr. Nagashima. That sentiment still has not changed. "He was a man with a burning spirit who was difficult to defeat, and he had a bright personality like the shining sun. He was a superstar who physically symbolized the age of rapid economic growth. He was 'Mr. Pro Baseball,' who led the nation's baseball world. "Even after he began suffering from the illness, his passion for baseball never waned and he encouraged managers, coaches and players. His aims will surely be carried on by his junior fellows." Japan Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani were among others who praised Nagashima. Ishiba told reporters that Nagashima was "like the shining sun and a symbol of hope to everyone." Ohtani posted several pictures of himself alongside Nagashima on his social media accounts. "May your soul rest in peace," Ohtani wrote. Notable deaths of 2025 Jill Sobule Jill Sobule attends the GLAAD Media Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., on March 30, 2023. Amazon, A Small Pharmacy Player, Seeks To Dent CVS And Walgreens Medicare Share
Amazon Pharmacy is rolling out new features in hopes of attracting more seniors covered by Medicare's drug benefit, a potentially lucrative market dominated by CVS Health and Walgreens. In an announcement Tuesday, Amazon said it is launching a new 'caregiver support feature' that allows its customers to have someone else manage medications on their behalf. Once the caregivers are verified through a secure invitation, 'caregivers can now manage medications for their loved ones,' the company said. In addition, customers with Medicare Part D drug coverage can now access PillPack, Amazon's online pharmacy that is designed to simplify medication management, particularly for multiple prescriptions via pre-sorted and labeled packets delivered directly to patients' doors. It's the latest effort by the online retail giant Amazon to invest in its pharmacy business, which Drug Channels Institute estimates generated 'less than $2 billion in 2024 revenue - just 0.3% of the total prescription dispensing market.' Amazon doesn't disclose how many prescriptions it fills or financial information regarding its pharmacy and healthcare businesses. Amazon, which purchased PillPack seven years ago this month for more than $750 million, has yet to disclose revenues for its Amazon Pharmacy business in the parent company's quarterly earnings statements. In contrast, CVS filled 435 million prescriptions in the first quarter for an increase of 4.3% from the year ago period while Walgreens filled more than 309 million prescription in its most recent quarter, up 3.4%. Combined, Walgreens and CVS generated more than $370 billion in prescription revenues last year, According to Dryg Channels. CVS and Walgreens have the largest share of the U.S. prescription market by most measures at a combined 40% while Amazon's share is less than 1%, according to some studies. Neither CVS nor Walgreens would disclose how many Medicare Part D prescriptions the companies fill. By adding features for seniors, Amazon Pharmacy is looking to tap a Medicare prescription market growing by thousands every day. More than 11,000 Americans are turning 65 every day. Amazon is also trying to find a niche with Americans who are caring for an elderly family member. More than 50 million people in the U.S. 'are taking care of an aging family member,' Amazon said citing data from AARP. The aging population, coupled by industry statistics showing up to one-third of Americans don't take their medications as directed or never fill them. 'These updates deliver what our customers have been asking for—simpler medication management for themselves and their loved ones,' Amazon Pharmacy vice president John Love said. 'Whether you're a caregiver juggling multiple prescriptions for an aging parent, or a customer who could benefit from the convenience of pre-sorted packets delivered reliably each month, we're removing barriers and making pharmacy work better for you.'
