Uruguay near World Cup qualification with 2-0 win over Venezuela
MONTEVIDEO, June 10 (Reuters) - Uruguay took a step closer to securing a 2026 World Cup spot with a 2-0 home victory over Venezuela at the Estadio Centenario on Tuesday, a victory which also snapped a four-match winless run in South American qualifiers.
Uruguay dominated much of the first half but struggled to break down a well-organised Venezuelan defence until Rodrigo Aguirre put the hosts ahead in the 42nd minute, heading in at the far post from a Maxi Araujo corner.
Giorgian De Arrascaeta doubled Uruguay's lead just two minutes into the second half, firing a superb shot into the top-left corner to seal a win that secures Marcelo Bielsa's side of at least an inter-confederation playoff berth.
In other qualifiers, Colombia led already-qualified Argentina 1-0 at halftime thanks to a Luis Díaz goal, while second-placed Ecuador can secure a World Cup spot if they avoid defeat in Peru.
In Sao Paulo, Paraguay will qualify with a win or a draw against Brazil, while the hosts can book their place in the tournament with a victory.

'I stopped to think, and said to myself: "I have not forgotten how to play football, I did not play in a World Cup for nothing, I did not make it to the national team for nothing". 'Everything happens for a reason, and this process was very necessary for my life.' Antony has been widely tipped to leave the club this summer, having joined in Ten Hag's first transfer window for £86million, and has so far failed to deliver on that price tag. As such, it had appeared to reflect badly on Ten Hag at the time given the claims that he had been a key part of the signing, yet the co-founder of the manager's agency, has claimed in a new book that they tried to block the move. 'Ten Hag and Vos were not in favour of this and wanted to stop the transfer,' writes Kees Vos of the Antony transfer in the book, Liverpool and the Dutch. 'But the club wanted to push through at all costs, because Arsenal was also interested in Antony. 'The risk of a stronger competitor would be great. Ultimately, Manchester United paid almost 100 million euros for Antony. Chelsea opponent ‘charged with sports fraud days before Club World Cup as betting scandal uncovered'
FLAMENGO star Bruno Henrique has reportedly been charged with sports fraud. The charge comes just days before the player was due to play against Chelsea in the Club World Cup. 5 5 The Brazilian club will face the Blues on June 20 at the Lincoln Financial Field stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The match will be the second of Enzo Maresca 's side's campaign in the tournament. However, striker Henrique has had an indictment filed against him by the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Federal District and Territories in Brazil. The MPDFT filed the complaint for sports fraud and embezzlement. Henrique's brother, sister-in-law and cousin have also been charged with the same crimes. The footballer now faces a nervous wait for the Court of Justice of the Federal District and Territories to either accept or reject the complaint. GE have reported that the complaint is based on Henrique picking up a yellow card in the 2023 Brasileirao against Saintos. The striker is alleged to have deliberately been cautioned and to have told his brother he would commit the offence. This allowed brother Wander Nunes Pinto Junior to place a bet beforehand, according to investigators. The report has claimed that Wander gave the information to other people ahead of the match. Henrique has protested his innocence amid the charges. He said: "Yes (I am innocent). "I didn't expect it the way it was, but I believe in justice up there. "God is a guy who always knows. My life, my trajectory, since I started playing soccer... God has always been with me. And, man, I'm calm about it. "The people who are there in this battle with me, I just ask that justice be done and that what's off the field be separated from what's on the field." Henrique, 34, previously played his football in Europe as he spent the 206/17 season with Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg. He failed to score a single goal in 17 appearances for the club before returning to Brazil. He joined Flamengo in 2019 and has scored 101 goals in 306 appearances in all competitions. However, in the most recent campaign, he only managed six goals in 26 outings in all competitions. Meanwhile, Chelsea's first game of the tournament will be against MLS outfit Los Angeles FC. The Blues will be reunited with former striker Olivier Giroud, who joined the club last summer. The Frenchman won the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League during his three-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

Police fire stun grenades and rubber bullets at fans of Chelsea's Club World Cup opponents Flamengo after 3,000 turned up to see them off at the airport
Flamengo's Club World Cup campaign has already got off to a dramatic start before a ball has even been kicked, with their send-off resulting in police reportedly using stun grenades and rubber bullets to quell protests. Flamengo are one of four Brazilian sides in the 32-club competition, along with Fluminense, Botafogo and Palmeiras, and will face Chelsea, ES Tunis and Mexico's Leon in the groups. However, their campaign comes at a time when one of their key stars, Gerson, is nearing an exit to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg, which has proven quite a divisive issue among the fans. An estimated 3,000 supporters arrived at Galeao Airport in Rio de Janeiro for the send-off of the 31-man squad, however same came armed with barbed farewell gifts. Allegedly chanting 'Gerson, go f*** yourself, Flamengo doesn't need you,' many of the red-black fans brought fake R$3 bills with the player's face on it, calling him a 'mercenary, Judas, traitor'. A video was posted on social media of fans holding their middle fingers up in the direction of the team bus and chanting. The Military Police are thought to have used stun grenades in an attempt to disperse the fans. On arrival at the airport, some fans managed to gain access to the top of the bus, as per reports, with police using pepper spray and rubber bullets. A specific traffic plan had been constructed for the event with roadblocks put up near to the airport, perhaps in anticipation of the unrest surrounding Gerson. The 28-year-old midfielder is in his second stint at the club, having left for Marseille in 2021 before returning in January 2023. Interestingly he first featured for Flamengo's Fla-Flu rivals Fluminense back in 2016 before he departed for Italy, with stints at Roma and Fiorentina. Since his return though he has been one of their most important players, playing 141 times, though he has only managed 11 goals. The Rio-based side will fly into Atlantic City and will have their first training session ahead of the competition on Thursday. They will be based at the Stockton University for their first two matches, which will be against Tunisian side ES Tunis on Tuesday, and Chelsea next Friday. They will then move to a new home for their match up with Mexico's Leon, which will be played in Florida the following Wednesday. The Club World Cup has this season been expanded to a 32-team competition and will be hosted across the United States of America. As well as Chelsea, Manchester City will be representing the Premier League, with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, PSG, Juventus, RB Salzburg, Benfica and Porto flying the European flag.
