Everything We Know About Lorde's Upcoming Album ‘Virgin'

Yahoo6 days ago

Lorde Summer is upon us: the pop star's fourth album Virgin will be out on June 27. It's been four years since her last album, Solar Power, and the 28-year-old artist's output between albums tends to be pretty minimal. Fans have been anxiously anticipating what her new era will bring, especially after her lead single 'What Was That' teased a bigger, bolder sound than her third LP.
Lorde divulged details of her new album in her Rolling Stone cover story, her first in-depth conversation about the new album. Here's what we know so far about Virgin:

Lorde had been working with Jack Antonoff for her last two albums, but it was time for her to shake things up. She had reached out to Stack, who has worked with Bon Iver and Danielle Haim, around the time she was set to begin her Solar Power tour. They recorded a song in 2022, but she wasn't totally sure what the album was going to be until they reunited towards the end of 2023, as her tour and festival dates wrapped up. They hunkered down in NYC for most of 2024 to write the music on Virgin.
Lorde was nervous about revealing too much of the album and is nervous for how people will respond. She teased how the lyrics will make her not seem as 'good' as she has been conditioned to act. 'There's going to be a lot of people who don't think I'm a good girl anymore, a good woman. It's over,' she said. 'It will be over for a lot of people, and then for some people, I will have arrived. I'll be where they always hoped I'd be.'
Over the past four years, Lorde has been in the midst of a life upheaval. An eating disorder and breakup had slammed her into 'rock bottom' as she put it, but the journey to re-centering herself was vastly helped by MDMA therapy sessions she had begun before her Solar Power tour to get over her crippling stage fright. Two years' worth of sessions helped Lorde re-discover her body; as she found clarity, she began to redefine her gender as well, which she describes as 'expansive.' (On the album's opening track, she sings 'Some days I'm a woman/Some days I'm a man.')
'I think coming more into my body, I came into an understanding of the grotesque nature of it and the glory and all these things,' she said. The lyrics on Virgin reflect that. 'It's right on the edge of gross. I often really tried to hit this kind of gnarliness or grossness. 'You tasted my underwear.' I've never heard that in a song, you know? It felt like the right way to tell this whole chapter.'
For Virgin, Lorde and Stack emphasized the percussive elements above all else. She wants the production to work on the body before the brain. That means that she tried to keep the language as simple and plain as possible. 'This is going to sound crazy, but I said to myself, 'We get it. You're smart. You don't need to telegraph it,'' she explained. 'Whereas in the past, I'm really trying to craft these lyrics. This time I was like, 'No, be smart enough to let it be really basic. Be plain with language and see what happens.''
Lorde and co-director Terrence O'Connor shot the 'What Was That' video on iPhone. It was an intentionally raw way of capturing the visuals, reflective of the nature of Virgin. She said the color of the album is 'clear,' amplifying its transparency. The cover is an X-ray of her pelvis, showing off the zipper on her jeans and her IUD. 'There's as little between me and the brand as possible,' she explained. The video and more tiny details like the font used in the booklet for physical releases are meant to evoke a 'school project' touch.
Fans immediately recognized some Melodrama touches to 'What Was That,' but the old Lorde song that ended up blowing was from her first album instead. 'Ribs' hit the Hot 100 and has helped Lorde recognize some connections between her teenage self and the woman she's become.
'I'm now seeing that Virgin has this connection to Pure Heroine, and to this young, brave part of myself. I'm seeing that all these albums have connective tissue,' she said. 'Having 'Ribs' bubble up next to songs I've written when I was 28. I can't wait to see what continues to bubble up when more of this album is out. What are the connections going to be?'

Sean Combs Trial: Hotel Security Guard Details Alleged Bribe Over Cassie Assault Video

Sean Combs repeatedly called a hotel security guard 'my angel' and offered the man his favorite tea during a high-stakes negotiation to purchase and bury the stunning video of Combs kicking and dragging his ex-girlfriend Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura in a hallway of the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles in March 2016, the security guard testified Monday. Eddy Garcia took the witness stand and told jurors he initially rebuffed the first few calls from Combs' chief of staff, Kristina Khorram, in which she sought to view and obtain the incriminating video. He told Khorram to get a subpoena. But Khorram eventually called him on his personal phone, making him 'nervous,' he testified. Khorram then handed the phone to Combs, who started playing on Garcia's sympathies, he said. More from Rolling Stone Sean Combs' Ex-Assistant Says Mogul 'Terrified and Brainwashed' Her 50 Cent Pledges to Prevent a Trump Pardon for Sean Combs: 'I'm Gonna Reach Out' Sean Combs Trial: RICO Heating Up, Suspicious Destroyed Evidence and Alleged Rape Combs called Garcia a 'good guy' and allegedly told him that if the video got out, it would 'ruin his career.' Garcia said he checked with his supervisor about brokering a deal, and the supervisor allegedly agreed to sell the video for $50,000. 'Eddy, my angel, I knew you could help. I knew you could do it,' Combs gushed when he learned they could make a deal, Garcia told jurors. Garcia recalled being dispatched to a high-rise office building with the video on a thumb drive. When he arrived, his voice was cracking because he was so nervous, he said. Combs purportedly noticed and ordered Khorram to 'go get him that tea I like,' Garcia said. Combs then asked for confirmation that the video on the thumb drive was the only copy left in existence, Garcia said. Combs wanted reassurance that 'nothing was on the cloud,' Garcia testified. When Garcia said he was concerned he might get in trouble if Ventura reported the incident, Combs allegedly placed a video call to Ventura. 'Let this guy know you want this to go away too,' Combs instructed Ventura during the call, Garcia said. Ventura purportedly said she had a movie coming out and wanted the incident to 'go away' as well. He said her demeanor was calm at the time. (In her own testimony, Ventura shared photos of the busted lip and bruised face that she snapped after fleeing the caught-on-camera beating at the InterContinental.) Garcia testified that once he heard from Ventura, he signed a declaration that the video on the thumb drive was the only existing copy. He also signed a non-disclosure agreement whose documents were dated March 7, 2011, two days after the hotel assault. They were printed on letterhead from Combs' company, Combs Enterprises, according to images shown in court. The agreement said Garcia would be on the hook for $1 million if he violated the confidentiality clause. Garcia said he did not receive his own copy of the agreement. 'I was nervous, I was in a rush to get out of there,' he testified. Garcia said after he signed, Combs presented him with a brown paper bag filled with $100,000. Combs ran the cash through a money counter in front of him, separating the bills into stacks of $10,000, Garcia recalled. The former security guard said Khorram was walking in and out of the room during the meeting and that Combs personally walked him out of the building, warning him not to make any big purchases that might raise questions. Garcia said he gave the first $50,000 to his boss and split the other $50,000 with the other security officer on duty at the time of the incident. He said Combs then called him on his personal phone a couple weeks later, wishing him a 'Happy Easter' and again calling him 'Eddy my angel.' He said Combs wanted to make sure no one had followed up with him, asking questions. 'God put you in my life for a reason,' Combs purportedly told him. Garcia said Combs ended the call saying that if Garcia 'needed anything, to let him know.' During her opening statement delivered on the first day of Combs' sex trafficking and racketeering trial in New York, Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Johnson said Combs used his inner circle to help facilitate the $100,000 bribe and 'keep his reputation and his power intact.' She said the alleged instance of bribery and obstruction of justice supported the racketeering conspiracy charge in Combs' indictment. Combs' defense lawyer, Teny Geragos, said in her opening statement that the $100,000 payment wasn't paid to obstruct justice, as prosecutors claim. 'This was solely, solely related to preventing bad publicity for both Combs and Cassie, and had nothing to do with obstructing a law enforcement investigation,' Geragos said. Combs, 55, was arrested in September and has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution and racketeering conspiracy. If convicted as charged, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. Combs' lawyers say he was a 'swinger' who indulged his 'kinky' proclivities with other consenting adults. They've acknowledged Ventura was the victim of an episode of domestic violence at the InterContinental hotel in 2016, but they deny Combs was a sex trafficker. Prosecutors claim Combs ran a criminal enterprise that manipulated women into drug-fueled, highly orchestrated sex marathons with male escorts that Combs watched and recorded. The encounters were known as 'freak-offs' and 'wild king nights.' They say Combs relied on the employees, vast wealth, and influence of his 'multi-faceted business empire' to fulfill his sexual desires. Beyond bribery and obstruction of justice, they say Combs and his inner circle engaged in threats, forced labor, kidnapping and arson. This 'And Just Like That' Star Went Pantless on the Red Carpet—But She Wasn't the First One

Sarita Choudhury has officially gotten in on the popular pantless trend. Making an appearance at the And Just Like That… Season Three Photocall at Hotel Napoleon in Paris on Thursday afternoon, the actress was seen wearing a svelte black long sleeve crepe cocktail dress with a deep v-neck, which she paired with matching sheer black tights. The dress, which nailed the no-pants theme we've been seeing in fashion over the past couple of months, was complemented by a pair of patent leather pointed-toe pumps, which included a dramatized triangular upper. Marc Piasecki/WireImage/Getty Images Keeping her makeup simple, Choudhury sleeked her hair into a side ponytail style that elegantly framed her face. Choudhury isn't the only one who's decided less is more when it comes to their outfit choices as of late. Nicole Kidman has been a leader of the no-pants revolution, posting a video of herself on Instagram in April where she could be seen wearing a long-sleeve black bodysuit that featured a plunging V-neck, which she accessorized with sheer black tights. The clip was set to Lorde's dreamy track, "What Was That," adding to the effortlessly cool vibe as her long blonde locks flowed into the air. Marc Piasecki/WireImage/Getty Images Mindy Kaling also recently stepped out in a jaw-dropping, fiery red blazer dress that highlighted her legs with sky-high red stilettos for the ultimate monochromatic moment, and legendary Olympian Simone Biles went pantless for the cover of Netflix Queue's Issue 20 in a red bodysuit that ditched the bottoms completely. As for the latest season of And Just Like That…, Season three makes its debut today with the episode "Outlook Good." New episodes will be released weekly on Thursdays, with the finale set to air on August 14. President Donald Trump Pardons NBA YoungBoy On Gun Charges

NBA YoungBoy, also known as YoungBoy Never Broke Again, was pardoned by President Donald Trump on Wednesday (May 25). According to ABC News, this means the 25-year-old will not have to follow the terms of his probation, including drug testing, since he finished his home confinement sentence last month. 'From Louisiana to Utah, the battles have been endless, and now he can concentrate on first and foremost his family, and then, of course, his amazing career,' expressed the rapper's lawyer, Drew Findling, in a statement to the news outlet. Rolling Stone reported that Findling 'did not do the pardon application, but can confirm he was pardoned.' 'I want to thank President Trump for granting me a pardon and giving me the opportunity to keep building — as a man, as a father, and as an artist,' explained the Baton Rouge native in a statement shared to Instagram stories. 'This moment means a lot. It opens the door to a future I've worked hard for and I am fully prepared to step into this.' In August 2024, the 'Outside Today' performer, legal name Kentrell Gaulden, pleaded guilty to possession of firearms by a convicted felon, hoping to have the courts transfer the litigation from his hometown to Utah. In Utah, he faced charges in a prescription pill drug fraud ring. He was sentenced to 23 months behind bars in December 2024 with five years of supervised probation after his release. According to HipHopDX, the rapper was released from a federal correctional facility in Talladega, Alabama, in March 2025, earlier than his projected summer release date, and transferred to Utah to complete his house arrest. Ahead of his presidential pardon, NBA YoungBoy announced his first headlining trek.
