'I think every artist should confront themselves in their offerings. You have to be examining your demons, your Achilles, figure out your blind spots!' he said in a follow up conversation. 'I had to look at my family, my parenting, and weaknesses as the head of my whole family. How have I been lacking and possibly toxic in ways I was not aware? That's when a piece of writing can be searing and have real consequence in our times.'
The act of creating becomes, in Leguizamo's view, an excavation, a confrontation with pain and discomfort that most people would rather look away. His solo shows were never just personal—they were cultural reckoning, starting with his own reflection.
In 2022, NGL Collective (of which Leguizamo was a co-founder) and mitú merged to form nglmitú, now one of the largest Latinx digital media platforms in the U.S., reaching 15 million followers. While the company's offerings span entertainment and lifestyle content, its stated goal reaches deeper: to reflect the bicultural identity of U.S.-born Latinos navigating multiple worlds.
'Our job is to entertain and inform,' said Joe Bernard, Chief Revenue Officer. 'But it also means helping brands build real connection with our audience—because the need for that is huge.'
The company's work lands in a cultural and political climate marked by division and demographic anxiety. 'We're a community that is oftentimes demonized,' Bernard noted. 'The work of reflecting its vibrancy, pain, humor, and rage is not just creative—it's urgent.'
In that context, what nglmitú produces isn't just content—it's signal. A reframing of what Latinx identity means, especially for those raised speaking English, immersed in American culture but often treated as outsiders.

Food, in this landscape, is not just nourishment or nostalgia—it's narrative. For Vanessa Vigil, Chief Brand Officer, the connection is deeply personal.
'My mom would sprinkle stories from her upbringing while cooking,' she said. 'That's how I felt connected to my culture.'
The culinary arm of the company, HK, now serves as a platform to preserve and reimagine those memories. Much of Latinx culinary heritage, Vigil pointed out, was never written down. Recipes were passed by touch and taste. 'Now there's this moment of realization—we're losing it,' she said. 'We want to be a place of encouragement, not intimidation.'
For Gamino, the work is also a tribute. 'When I was ordering food in D.C., it was coming from some of the same fields my mom worked in,' he said. 'Some of the farms in South Texas where my friends used to pick grapefruits before football practice. There's a deep connection. I feel an obligation to honor that.'
That honor sometimes shows up in humble dishes. Asked which childhood meal deserves more attention, Gamino named migas: fried tortilla strips scrambled with eggs. 'I still eat it. I feed it to my kids,' he said. 'It was born out of what we could afford. And now, like the story of my generation, it's been reinvented—with tomatoes, chorizo, confit.'
Earlier in his career, Gamino masked his origins, afraid others would discredit him. 'I wanted to be seen as an equal,' he said. 'But I was scared people would judge me for being from a border town in Texas.'
He no longer adopts the anglicized pronunciation of his name. 'Being authentic,' he explained, 'is leaning into discomfort. Saying, 'This is who I am. This is how I speak.' It brings an open invitation for criticism—but I'd rather face that than be invisible.'
That principle—of choosing discomfort over concealment—has shaped both his leadership and his content strategy. And it mirrors Leguizamo's own arc: a move from self-censorship to creative confrontation, from fear to artistic risk.

How an Apache language teacher found herself on a Kevin Costner film set
FORT THOMAS, Ariz. — Sixteen kids bent over worksheets, laboriously writing out words in Ndee biyátiʹ — Apache — as their teacher recited them in English. "Scorpion," she said. Tsédag histasí. "Tarantula," she said. Biganłané. A group of bright purple posters displayed the numbers one through 10 in Apache with common items to spur memories. Data'a — one San Carlos Apache Tribe flag. Naki — two moccasins. Tąągi — three cradleboards. Colorful posters sporting other common Apache terms lined the classroom walls. There were even terms for television and TV table. It was another day in Aurelia Bullis' fourth grade Apache language class. Bullis has spent most of her life in the Fort Thomas school district. A native of Bylas, a nearby community, Bullis attended school in the district and now teaches the Apache language to pre-kindergarten through high school students. Lately, she's also been instructing actors to speak her native tongue and filmmakers how to avoid stereotypical syntax. Bullis started working over the summer after graduating from Fort Thomas High School. "There was a program where you could work during the summers or just to make a little bit of money," she said. Bullis worked at the local Head Start, where she moved up from volunteer to supervisor. After a short time as both a bus driver and teacher, Bullis saw a sign recruiting for an Apache language teacher. "I said, 'Oh, I might as well try,'" said Bullis, whose first language is Apache. Bullis beat out two older ladies for the job because she was willing to create lesson plans for kids from kindergarten through sixth grade. But then she had second thoughts. "What did I get myself into? How am I gonna do this?" She had never taught older kids before and felt intimidated. Hubby Buz came to the rescue. "He took us to the Twin Arrows Casino for the weekend, just to get away," Bullis said. Soon she hit upon a method to do the job. "I think I know what to do now," she said. "I'm going to do this lesson for this class, this lesson for the older ones, and then it all just came to me and I started putting it together." Bullis sat up all night typing up lesson plans for her new job. Eventually, Bullis' position grew to include junior and senior high classes. She also sponsored the school's culture club, which includes running school royalty pageants. She's never looked back after nine years of teaching both spoken and written Apache in the dialect common to the eastern San Carlos and White Mountain Apache peoples. Hollywood came calling for Bullis through one of Indian Country's time-honored methods: family. Bullis' younger sister, Beverly, lives in the La Jolla Reservation in north San Diego County with her husband, a relative of famed designer and fellow La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians tribal member Jamie Okuma. Okuma's son, Bodhi Okuma Linton, is an actor who has appeared in film and television shows, including "Reservation Dogs" and "Dark Winds." Linton was also featured in the 2024 film "Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1." During the 2022 production, staff from Kevin Costner's production company were searching for a fluent Apache speaker to instruct the Native actors cast for the film, none of whom spoke Apache. "So Jamie asked her nephew, Melvin Nelson to ask my sister." But Beverly can only understand Apache after being barred from speaking the language while attending a religious school. Beverly gave her older sister, Aurelia, a call. "I was teaching a summer class in San Carlos," Bullis said. "She asked if I wanted a job for the summer? It's for a movie." And not just any movie — "Horizon" was created by the Oscar-winning Costner. "You're kidding right?" Bullis said. It was no joke. Bullis was hired to translate the actors' lines into Apache. Next came the call to teach the cast their lines on location in Moab, Utah. "My husband was excited because I told him he's coming along." Bullis said her most thrilling, yet scary day was when Costner himself came to the set. "I couldn't say anything. I was just too scared and in shock." She started digging in her bag just so she wouldn't pass out. "But then he came around, and we got to shake his hand." After several weeks, though, Bullis had to return to Fort Thomas as the school year had started. They created a workaround for that, too. "We used Zoom to teach each actor," she said. Bullis has more movie work in progress. She's working with at least one other filmmaker on a new project. For this job, Bullis' work is more than just translating. "The lines are kind of generic," she said. The writer didn't know how Apache people talked. "It was like, 'Oh spirit, you gave me the mountains' and this and that. "My husband and I both thought it was cheesy." Bullis is now busy rewriting lines to more accurately reflect how Apache people really talk. And she said that when she arrives on the set, the actors had best be dressed properly, "like the real deal that Costner had with their regalia, no generic feathers, that sort of thing." Another film producer is already working to become familiar with Apache culture and the language that expresses that culture. "He's been wanting to come down and see Sunrise Dances and those sorts of things," Bullis said. "We've been talking on Zoom.' Looking forward, Bullis is hard at work teaching younger generations about their culture and language. It was difficult, however, to make Apache her kids' first language. Bullis' husband was also forbidden to speak Apache at school and thus can only understand it, as can her four kids. "I speak to them in Apache and they understand. They'll say a little bit of this and that, but other than that, they just go back to speaking English," she said. Bullis is working to bridge that gap with her four grandchildren. "I teach them here," she said. "It's like Apache is their second language." Her fellow Apache teacher is also teaching her third-grade granddaughter. But her 11-month-old grandson is another matter. "We watch him when I'm not working, and really getting him to 'say this one, say this.' So he's slowly picking up that language." On May 31, the actors took the stage at a packed Paramount Theatre and reminisced about their days filming seven seasons of the drama centered on a New York advertising agency in the 1960s. The series also starred Christina Hendricks, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss and Kiernan Shipka. Hamm, 54, said that he had a broken hand while filming the scene when Moss' Peggy Olson is promoted to copywriter. So he asked Moss to be mindful and only softly squeeze it during a congratulatory handshake. But she forgot about the injury, Hamm said, and 'hits me with a handshake that is like a president handshake, and a lightning bolt goes all the way through me and I hit the floor so hard.' Slattery, 62, shared his disdain for his Season 7 mustache and again revealed he had first auditioned for the role of Don, though they'd already cast Hamm in the part. Producers lured Slattery with the Draper role, hoping to convince him to apply for agency owner Roger Sterling, who had a smaller part in the pilot. Hamm says he auditioned for the enigmatic Don, aka Dick Whitman, about nine times. The 'disgusting' prop booze and cigarettes Hamm and Slattery dished on the tricks that helped viewers believe they were chain-smoking, booze-guzzling men of that era. 'I think somebody did a count,' Hamm said, 'and in the pilot alone I smoked 75 cigarettes or something.' They were fake, Slattery pointed out. 'That just means that there's no nicotine in them.' Hamm said. 'It doesn't mean you're not burning something and inhaling…' Hamm said some of the younger actors in the pilot episode vowed to smoke real cigarettes to more authentically portray their characters. 'Within three days,' he said, 'they were yellow and sallow and like, 'This is a terrible idea.'' In place of vodka, the actors would sip water, garnished with onions. 'Pop another pearl onion in your glass of water and then you'd smoke 26 more fake cigarettes, and it was 9:30 in the morning," Slattery said. "It was disgusting.' Jon Hamm on Don Draper's finale 'revelation' During the Q&A portion of the panel, a fan asked about Hamm's interpretation of the finale. In the series' last moments, Don dreamed up the 'I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke' ad while meditating on a California cliff. Weiner envisioned Don's end in Season 1, Hamm said. 'He reached the end of land as far away as he could from his life and realized that his life was creating advertising. That was his revelation, that this is what he is and what he does. He's not Dick Whitman. He's not Don Draper. He's some version of this, but he is an advertising man and that was, I think, positive.' John Slattery addresses blackface in Season 3 Slattery told fans that when he was asked to sing "My Old Kentucky Home" in blackface in Season 3, he phoned Hamm, seeking his costar's thoughts. Ultimately, Slattery 'felt like, 'Well, this is probably something that occurred and it's probably something that this character would've done. So what leg do I have to stand on not to do it?' After arriving on location in character, Slattery said, 'The first person I opened the van and saw was a very large African American Los Angeles motorcycle cop, who was helping me open the door. 'We're like face to face,' Slattery continued. 'I had to go and sing that thing in front of them and everybody.'
