Chandler v Pimblett

BBC News12-04-2025

Lightweight Paddy Pimblett fights Michael Chandler in the biggest test of his MMA career on Saturday at UFC 314 in Miami. The Liverpool star is an underdog against the experienced American, who has fought most of the top contenders in the lightweight division.Pimblett, 30, could fire himself into the top 10 of the rankings with a win and many of the big names in MMA are backing the Englishman.Chandler is aiming to get back in the win column after two successive defeats for the 38-year-old.Tell us what you think by voting below and check out all the predictions from the world of MMA.
UFC featherweight Arnold Allen: "Chandler has zero IQ, but 100% heart. He's dirty, he will poke you in the eye and pull your hair but he will try everything to win. I feel Paddy's grappling will be better. Paddy's jiu jitsu usurps Chandler's wrestling. I honestly think Paddy is going to finish him. Maybe Paddy hurts him on the feet, Chandler rushes in and Paddy secures a triangle. That's how I am calling it." (Arnold Allen YouTube channel)UFC lightweight Paddy Pimblett: "He's gonna come out and try and take my head off, I know he is 100%, and I'll be using my range against him. I had a stare down with him the other week and there's a big size difference and I'll be honest, I thought he was going to be wider than he was, bigger than he was, and he wasn't. I tower over him and he'll see that come fight night."UFC lightweight Michael Chandler: "This is a fight people care about, it has all the makings of the people's main event. I'm healthy, I'm ready, we've had a phenomenal training camp, I had a daughter born a few days ago so I've got some extra motivation. I'm going to go out there and get my hand raised and finish Paddy Pimblett in spectacular fashion."Former UFC bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo: "I just feel like with Michael Chandler, I think the UFC knows what they're doing. They're doing a five rounder. Like, think about it. I think Paddy Pimblett is a lot better than what we think, and I'm smelling an upset here." (Pound 4 Pound podcast)Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker: "Chandler's going to come out hard and fast like he always does. He'll slowly fade. I expect Paddy to start beating him with volume. If Chandler goes for a lazy takedown, Paddy's submission game is super under-rated. That's how I feel about the fight. I've got Paddy winning." (MMArcade podcast)Former light-heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill: "Chandler is going to have to be patient and work behind the jab. Some veteran patience would be huge. For Paddy he should work the kicks, chop the leg and take away the explosiveness. Take out the legs and Paddy should find the shots from there." (Jamahal Hill YouTube Channel)
Former UFC middleweight chamion Israel Adesanya: Chandler should just blitz Pimblett if he wants to get to the chin. Chandler with the right could do a big number on him in round one, Pimblett is pretty tough. He might withstand the storm in round one, and then round two and three find a way to get the victory. But again Chandler just has one gear. I like Chandler, I want him to win but if it goes past round one I would pick Paddy. (Freestylebender Youtube Channel)Former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley: "It's such an interesting fight, Michael Chandler is such a gangster for taking that fight. If he beats Paddy it's still a big win. Paddy is skilled - I don't know who wins but it's going to be very competitive." (Timbo Sugashow Podcast)MMA coach John Kavanagh: "Paddy has showed us several times scousers don't get knocked out. He'll have a reach advantage, as long as he keeps the shots long he'll have the striking advantage. I think Paddy will get the rear-naked choke in the first round or two, set up with his rangey long shots, forcing Michael to take it to the ground then using a scramble and getting a rear-naked choke."UFC lightweight Mauricio Ruffy: "I don't know how the fight's going to develop. One guy will be throwing punches and the other guy will try and bring him down. Because of the momentum he's got, I'm going to go with Paddy." (TNT Sports)UFC light-heavyweight Jared Cannonier: "Chandler is going to win that one. He'll grind out a win. I think Pimblett gets hit and Chandler hits too hard. Paddy's a tough one but they don't call Michael 'Iron Mike' for nothing." (Overdogs Podcast)UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier: "Chandler all day. Go hard on the money."

Trump attends UFC championship fight in New Jersey, taking a break from politics, Musk feud

President Donald Trump walked out to a thunderous standing ovation just ahead of the start of the UFC pay-per-view card at the Prudential Center on Saturday night, putting his public feud with tech billionaire Elon Musk on hold to instead watch the fierce battles inside the cage. Trump was accompanied by UFC President Dana White and the pair headed to their cageside seats to Kid Rock's 'American Bad Ass.' Trump and White did the same for UFC's card last November at Madison Square Garden, only then they were joined by Musk. Trump shook hands with fans and supporters — a heavyweight lineup that included retired boxing champion Mike Tyson — on his way to the cage. Trump was joined by his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, along with son Eric Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump shook hands with the UFC broadcast team that included Joe Rogan. Rogan hosted Trump on his podcast for hours in the final stages of the campaign last year. UFC fans went wild for Trump and held mobile devices in their outstretched arms to snap pictures of him. Trump arrived in time for the start of a card set to include two championship fights. Julianna Peña and Merab Dvalishvili were scheduled to each defend their 135-pound championships. UFC fighter Kevin Holland won the first fight with Trump in the building, scaled the cage and briefly chatted with the President before his post-fight interview. ___

Tottenham decide transfer stance after missing out on two targets

Tottenham are prioritising the appointment of their new head coach but there is recognition that they must now act quickly following a slow start to their summer transfer business Tottenham's hesitance over the future of Ange Postecoglou has already seen them miss out on two midfielders and now they want to get a deal for the Aussie's successor in place to avoid missing out on further targets. Daniel Levy had spent the past two weeks deliberating whether to stick or twist in the aftermath of Spurs' Europa League triumph in Bilbao before finally pulling the trigger on Postecoglou on Friday. Thomas Frank is considered the clear frontrunner to replace the 59-year-old and while Brentford are yet to receive a formal approach for the Dane, positive talks have already taken place with Frank. ‌ Fulham's Marco Silva remains another name of interest but barring a significant U-turn, it looks as though Spurs will push ahead with a swoop for Frank, whose Brentford contract contains a significant buy-out clause. ‌ The Bees head coach is thought to have a good relationship with Spurs technical director and compatriot Johan Lange, who is expected to remain at the club and he'll also be tasked with overseeing transfer business alongside the likely returning Fabio Paratici. Spurs have already lost key ground in the market, England international Angel Gomes, a player Tottenham had been pursuing, has opted to join Marseille on a free transfer after also snubbing West Ham. Gomes' contract with Lille is set to expire at the end of the month but he now looks poised to remain in France after warming to the idea of working with Roberto De Zerbi. Meanwhile, Real Betis' American maestro Johnny Cardoso has agreed to join Atletico Madrid, providing a club-to-club deal can be struck. Last summer, Spurs negotiated a £21million first-option clause - that can only be triggered during a two-week window - on USMNT starlet Cardoso when selling Giovani Lo Celso to Betis. But it now looks as though Atletico will pounce and conclude a deal at a higher price for the highly-rated 23-year-old, who is not willing to wait around for Tottenham. ‌ Names of continued interest are the likes of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, who has a £68m buy-out clause (worth £60m + £8m in add-ons) that becomes active this summer, and Eagles skipper Marc Guehi while the Europa League winners were also tracking Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo has intimated that he wants to join Manchester United, who have had a £55m bid rejected and it remains to be seen if Tottenham-linked Frank could potentially swing the balance and convince his current player to join him in north London, if he lands the job. Ultimately, until Spurs know who their new manager is going to be - he will have a clear say on targets - it's difficult to envisage them splashing out on mega-money deals. Business will also likely be shaped by potential outgoings with Cristian Romero and captain Heung-min Son among those that could yet seek to pursue new challenges. Inevitably, they would need to be replaced with quality. Spurs remain keen on signing Mathys Tel on a permanent basis but they want to negotiate with Bayern Munich and won't be triggering their mooted £45m buy-option.
