OpenAI building search index to power ChatGPT super assistant, reveals internal document
OpenAI appears to have grand visions for ChatGPT as an everyday essential for users. This is all part of a larger strategy that has been detailed in an internal document that was recently made public.
The document was disclosed as part of the legal discovery process in the antitrust search remedies case between Google and the US Department of Justice (DOJ). The confidential roadmap suggests that the AI startup aims to build ChatGPT as an 'intuitive AI super assistant' that can manage tasks and take actions on behalf of the user. In simple words, OpenAI plans to transform ChatGPT into a 'super assistant' that can move seamlessly between channels, acting as a personalised gateway to the internet.
The document envisions ChatGPT as evolving into a full-spectrum operator, meaning it manages calendars, does travel booking, navigates software, and even contacts professionals on the user's behalf. The Sam Altman-led AI startup has reportedly described its plan for ChatGPT as an intelligent entity with T-shaped skills.
'It's an entity because it's personalised to you and available anywhere you go – including chatgpt.com, our native apps, phones, email, or third-party surfaces like Siri. It's T-shaped because it has broad skills for daily tasks that are tedious and deep expertise for tasks that most people find impossible (starting with coding). The broad part is all about making life easier: answering a question, finding a home, contacting a lawyer, joining a gym, planning vacations, buying gifts, managing calendars, keeping track of to-dos, and sending emails,' an excerpt from the document reads.
On the technical side, OpenAI is relying on AI reasoning models like o3, which, according to the document, is smart enough to reliably perform agentic tasks. Moreover, it has plans to deploy additional features such as Computer Use, which will expand ChatGPT's ability to take direct actions.
Another key part of the strategy seems to be the development of a dedicated search index. 'To fully be that interface, we need a search index and the ability to take actions on the web.' OpenAI may roll out this feature in the second half of 2025; however, there are not many details.
OpenAI seems to be treading carefully, as it does not want ChatGPT to be seen as a product such as a search engine, operating system or even a browser. Based on the document, the company aims to establish a new category of personal AI agents that guides users through their digital needs. The company appears to want ChatGPT to be the main entry point for daily digital life.
'Now we're up against search engines, browsers, even interactions with real people. This one isn't a head-on match. It's about solving more and more use cases and gradually pulling users in. That's why we don't call our product a search engine, a browser, or an OS – it's just ChatGPT,' read the document.
In the document, the company also breaks down its competition into two groups. In the short term, its rivals include other popular chatbots such as Claude, Gemini, or Copilot. However, in the broader sense, it considers traditional search engines, browsers, and even interactions with real people as its competitors.
It also describes one of its competitors, which is redacted from the document, as especially threatening, as it can embed its own AI systems into products without worrying about business model manipulation. OpenAI has also listed several strategic advantages it has over its peers. The company believes it has got everything it needs to win, such as one of the fastest-growing products of all time, a category-defining brand, a research lead, a compute lead, a world-class research team, and an increasing number of effective people with agency who are motivated.
'We don't rely on ads, giving us flexibility on what to build. Our culture values speed, bold moves, and self-disruption. Maintaining these advantages is hard work, but, if we do, they will last for a while,' the document reads.

Capital Group, Kushner's Thrive Visited China to Study AI Scene
Joshua Kushner's Thrive Capital and investment firm Capital Group have in recent months visited China to learn about its AI industry, joining a growing number of US investors rekindling interest in the country after DeepSeek's advances stunned Silicon Valley. Senior people at Thrive met with companies and funds in China to discuss AI, people familiar with their visit to the country said. Kushner didn't join the delegation, one of the people said, asking to remain anonymous discussing a private event. At the same time, Capital Group — one of the world's largest funds — dispatched senior executives to China to find out more about the AI scene, the people said. The separate visits took place around the time Uber Technologies Inc.-backer Benchmark Capital agreed to lead an investment in Butterfly Effect, creator of the up-and-coming AI service Manus that's got Chinese-born founders. The outreach underscores tentative but mounting interest in a once-overlooked Chinese AI industry that's getting re-assessed since DeepSeek proved a homegrown firm can design a platform on par with the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic. It's unclear how far those talks have gone, or if they'll result in actual investments. A representative for Thrive, controlled by the brother of US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, said in an email the firm doesn't have any investments in China and doesn't intend to invest. A Capital Group spokesperson declined to comment. Kushner has previously been critical of the US tech industry's enthusiasm for DeepSeek, and at a recent conference in DC said that he hoped the US would produce the leading AI company. 'Proficient and efficient artificial intelligence needs to be built with American democratic values,' Kushner said in April. 'And if it's not, then I think the consequences are going to be quite extraordinary for the Western world.' Any deal to finance Chinese AI startups is unlikely to sit well with hawks in Washington wary of US capital bankrolling a Chinese technological apparatus amid tightening scrutiny from Trump's administration. Benchmark itself has drawn fire from Silicon Valley figures on social media for investing in Manus, despite the startup offering its service largely outside of China. The Treasury Department is now asking questions about the Manus deal, Semafor has reported. Manus and Benchmark spokespeople declined to comment, although the startup lists its location as Singapore on its LinkedIn page. Manus, co-founded by Xiao Hong, Cheung Tao and Peak Ji Yichao, raised more than $10 million in previous financing, several China-based media outlets have reported, including from Tencent Holdings Ltd. and prominent VC firms ZhenFund and HSG, formerly Sequoia China. Reddit users' comments were used to train AI Chatbot, social media platforms sues artificial intelligence company
Social media platform Reddit sued the artificial intelligence company Anthropic on Wednesday, alleging that it is illegally "scraping" the comments of millions of Reddit users to train its chatbot Claude. Reddit claims that Anthropic has used automated bots to access Reddit's content despite being asked not to do so, and 'intentionally trained on the personal data of Reddit users without ever requesting their consent.' Anthropic said in a statement that it disagreed with Reddit's claims "and will defend ourselves vigorously.' Reddit filed the lawsuit Wednesday in California Superior Court in San Francisco, where both companies are based. 'AI companies should not be allowed to scrape information and content from people without clear limitations on how they can use that data,' said Ben Lee, Reddit's chief legal officer, in a statement Wednesday, as per a family. Reddit has previously entered licensing agreements with Google, OpenAI and other companies that are paying to be able to train their AI systems on the public commentary of Reddit's more than 100 million daily users. Those agreements 'enable us to enforce meaningful protections for our users, including the right to delete your content, user privacy protections, and preventing users from being spammed using this content,' Lee said, AP reported. The licensing deals also helped the 20-year-old online platform raise money ahead of its Wall Street debut as a publicly traded company last year Among those who stood to benefit was OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who accumulated a stake as an early Reddit investor that made him one of the company's biggest shareholders. Anthropic was formed by former OpenAI executives in 2021 and its flagship Claude chatbot remains a key competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT. While OpenAI has close ties to Microsoft, Anthropic's primary commercial partner is Amazon, which is using Claude to improve its widely used Alexa voice assistant. Live Events Much like other AI companies, Anthropic has relied heavily on websites such as Wikipedia and Reddit that are deep troves of written materials that can help teach an AI assistant the patterns of human language. In a 2021 paper co-authored by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei — cited in the lawsuit — researchers at the company identified the subreddits, or subject-matter forums, that contained the highest quality AI training data, such as those focused on gardening, history, relationship advice or thoughts people have in the shower. Anthropic in 2023 argued in a letter to the U.S. Copyright Office that the "way Claude was trained qualifies as a quintessentially lawful use of materials,' by making copies of information to perform a statistical analysis of a large body of data. It is already battling a lawsuit from major music publishers alleging that Claude regurgitates the lyrics of copyrighted songs. But Reddit's lawsuit is different from others brought against AI companies because it doesn't allege copyright infringement. Instead, it focuses on the alleged breach of Reddit's terms of use, and the unfair competition, it says, was created.

Cabinet will discuss JAC demands, CM firm on resolving employees' issues: Bhatti
Hyderabad: Ahead of the cabinet meeting on Thursday, deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka-led cabinet sub-committee held talks with govt employees' JAC leaders on Wednesday and assured them that the Congress govt considered their 57 demands as genuine. "Despite financial constraints, the CM is firm on resolving their issues. The cabinet sub-committee will submit a report to the govt with its recommendations, and the cabinet meeting on Thursday will decide which of the financial intensive and other demands will be accepted," Bhatti said. Sources told TOI that the cabinet meeting was likely to give preference to clearing a significant quantum of the pending Rs 10,000 bills of the employees and may announce release of one Dearness Allowance and time frame for another DA. The govt may also accept demand of new health cards, but a final decision on "cashless and capless treatment" would be taken after cabinet discussion. The govt may also revise the treatment slabs fixed nearly nine years ago. However, contrary to expectations, sources said the cabinet may not decide on enhancing the retirement age from the present 61 to 64 years following intelligence reports on severe backlash from students and youth. We are confident that tomorrow's cabinet meeting will find solutions to many of the demands of the JAC," he said while emphasising the need for their cooperation so that neither the public nor employees face difficulties. He said that it was due to financial issues resulting from the past decade's governance that bills and other demands of the employees piled up. "The Congress is continuing many welfare schemes of the previous government and is also implementing its own promises. Also, new schemes not announced in the manifesto have been launched. All this is being done without any additional tax on the citizens. The govt is committed to addressing employees' demands as part of this effort," Bhatti said. On their part, the JAC leaders said they would decide their future course of action based on the cabinet decision. The JAC has threatened to launch protest programmes in a phased manner, followed by a pen-down strike from June 9 onwards, if at least some of their important demands are not met. The JAC has demanded 51% fitment (PRC), release of at least three of the five pending DAs and Rs 10,000 crore employees bills, new health cards with cashless and capless treatment, revision of old rates of medical treatment and a number of non-financial issues such as general transfers. Besides these issues, the cabinet meeting on Thursday is also expected to discuss the approval of loans to unemployed youth under Rajiv Yuva Vikasam, implementation status of various development projects and those to be launched with central assistance, and national dam safety authority and vigilance reports.
