Proven Stress Management Techniques to Maintain a Healthy Heart
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S.; more than four million women die from ischemic heart disease (IHD) each year, and cardiovascular disease claims more lives than all cancers, respiratory diseases and infectious diseases combined.
This risk is even more pronounced among women with intersecting identities; Black women, in particular, are more likely to die of heart disease than white women. They also have the highest rates of hypertension, stroke, heart failure and coronary heart disease among all women in the U.S.

Despite the fact that women suffer from more heart attacks than men as they age—and are more likely to die from cardiac events—heart disease continues to be seen as a 'man's disease,' and women are generally told to monitor heart health symptoms based on men's cardiovascular systems. Because of this, many women don't even understand their risks.
Women are less likely to be referred to cardiac rehabilitation, less likely to be put on statins or beta blockers to pre-empt cardiac events, plus they are more likely to have their symptoms dismissed as a mental health issue.
'Often women don't get screened, not through any fault of their own, but even the medical community often ignores women,' asserted Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute staff physician and cardiologist Dr. Martha Gulati in an interview with Flow Space.
'Bikini medicine—breast and reproductive health—is the norm for how we care for women,' Gulati, who serves as the director of Preventive Cardiology and a cardiology professor at Cedars-Sina, the associate director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center and the Anita Dann Friedman Chair in Women's Cardiovascular Medicine and Research, added. 'We must move beyond the bikini if we are going to care for women throughout their lifespan.'
In midlife, caring for the whole body—particularly, when it comes to cardiovascular health—becomes even more critical.
'Heart disease is the leading killer of women, and their risk increases with age,'Gulati said. 'Women need to know if they are at risk; often, they have not been assessed or talked to about their risk.'
One of the five major heart disease risk factors for women is hormonal changes associated with menopause. Estrogen has cardioprotective factors, so when estrogen levels decrease in menopause, cholesterol levels and blood vessel elasticity change—and heart disease risk rises.
'Menopause is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease,' Dr. Puja K. Mehta—an associate professor in the division of cardiology at Emory University, director of Women's Translational Cardiovascular Research, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association—told Flow Space. 'What we mean by this is that a woman's risk of having a heart attack or stroke increases post-menopause compared to pre-menopausal years. A number of risk factors change during the menopause transition, which can vary from woman to woman.'
During the transition, 'bad' cholesterol levels may increase, 'good' cholesterol might decrease and blood pressure can elevate. Plaque also builds up in women's arteries faster after menopause than it does in men's bodies as they age.
'Risk factors that might have previously not been present become more likely [during midlife and throughout the menopausal transition],' Gulati explained. 'Many women, for example, spend much of their younger years being told their blood pressure is low. Blood pressure actually increases with age for more women, and, at menopause, blood pressure is often noted to be elevated.'
The symptoms of menopause can also impact the heart.
Hot flashes and night sweats can increase cardiovascular risk factors, as well as that stubborn 'menopause belly.' While hormone replacement therapy (HRT), can be a critical intervention for the physiological symptoms of menopause, tending to mental health is also a critical form of heart disease prevention, especially in midlife.
Various studies have demonstrated that mental health is closely tied to women's heart health—even more so than men's. Depression and anxiety can accelerate women's risk of heart disease, and the psychological stress of heart disease itself may contribute to women's increased risk of mortality following a cardiac event.
'Stress is obviously a normal part of life, and in small doses, it's likely not harmful,' Gulati explained. 'Short exposures to stress often helps us.'
She offered the example of someone being motivated by the stress of a deadline to finish a project, or how the stress of a job interview can improve performance.
'Even the acute stress of surgery improves our immune response and often helps us fight infections,' she added. 'That's the good effect of short-term stress.'
Although there are forms of 'good stress,' triggering our fight-or-flight response over time can become toxic in the body. Bodies in a state of chronic stress release high levels of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline—which can raise blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels, and increase women's vulnerability to anxiety and depression.
Chronic stress can also lead to high blood pressure and disproportionately fuel inflammation in women's bodies, which can sharply increase the risk of major cardiac events.
'Excess stress can be harmful,' Gulati cautioned. 'Chronic stress also can disrupt sleep, affect eating patterns, reduce physical activity, and cause emotional and psychological damage.'
Women's bodies see more activation in the left prefrontal cortex of the brain when under stress than men's and a higher activation of the amygdala. Since the amygdala is part of the brain's fear center, the amygdala tells the body to continue its stress response, making women particularly vulnerable to chronic stress—and the more chronic stress we have, the harder it becomes for our prefrontal cortex to calm us down and control our emotional responses.
The brain-heart connection 'is very important in both men and women,' Mehta noted, 'however, it seems that women may be particularly susceptible to psychological and psychosocial stress.'
Takotsubo syndrome, also called 'broken-heart syndrome—in which sudden emotional or physical stress causes physical symptoms mimicking a heart attack—is a powerful example. More than 85% of cases occur in postmenopausal women, Mehta explained.
'It is unclear why postmenopausal women are more at risk of having a Takotsubo event, but it is thought that microvascular dysfunction and heart artery spasm are important players in this. Even younger women with a history of coronary artery disease, when they are exposed to acute mental stress testing in the laboratory, they can have abnormalities of blood flow to the heart in response to acute mental stress.'
Broken-heart syndrome cases reinforce the gendered differences in how women's bodies react to stress physiologically.
'Death of a loved one, acute fear, but also surprise birthday parties have preceded this type of heart attack,' Gulati added. 'An acute surge of stress hormones, [such as] adrenaline, often precedes such events.'
Studies have demonstrated that women are more susceptible than men to diminished blood flow during acute stress events, and our microvascular response to stress is associated with poorer health outcomes. Stress in women also disrupts lipid balance, increases platelet aggregation and impairs glucose regulation.
'Menopause can itself increase stress with all its physiological and mental changes that often affect sleep and mood,' Gulati explained. 'Frequent hot flashes can induce stress and anxiety for many women.'
In fact, symptoms of menopause include anxiety, mood swings and depression, increasing the mental health burden women carry in midlife. Levels of cortisol also rise naturally as women age, increasing the risks of chronic stress.
Gulati noted that stressors like 'work, family, marriage, financial worries, and taking care of someone sick' can happen at any age—but for women in midlife, stress management is even more critical.
What that looks like is up to you: 'Some like mindfulness and meditation; some enjoy gardening, nature walks; some need to turn off devices and sleep more, limit social media, which can be a time sink,' Mehta offered. 'Pool exercises can be very helpful. Chair exercises, gentle exercises for seniors, and those with ortho limitations can work with a therapist.'
No matter what form it takes, regular physical activity—even a brisk walk—can reduce stress. 'It's also important to exercise, including weight bearing,' she noted, 'to attenuate muscle loss.'
'Stress reduction may result with biofeedback tools, exercise, yoga, tai-chai,' Gulati added. 'Avoiding alcohol, eating healthy and improved sleep can also help reduce stress.' So can tidying up your living spaces; getting organized can decrease stress and improve your sleep.
Having sources of emotional support can also be a lifeline.
Studies show that women's heart health, more than men's, benefits from consistent relationships with family members and friends. Laughing with friends and loved ones can reduce your heart disease risk in a myriad of ways: Laughter lowers stress, increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure; it also lowers cortisol, increases dopamine and strengthens our emotional resilience.
Pets can also make a big difference.
'Dogs can reduce stress—truly, there's some literature on this!' Gulati shared. 'Get a dog for the exercise and stress reduction, with a little unconditional love on the side!'
'Find a friend to go walking or exercise with,' Mehta recommended. 'Turn off late-night TV watching or binging on shows so you can get enough rest, block time in the calendar for self-care… Even a few minutes counts and is better than nothing on busy days. Learn to say 'no' and not over-commit. It can help with reducing stress and making heart healthy choices.'
For those who have the option, one of the best strategies to relieve the body of the impacts of chronic stress, is a good vacation—and experts suggest women need them even more than men to really rest and restore their bodies.
Monitoring and managing your own stress is important—but don't be embarrassed to ask for help if your efforts are only going so far.
'Sometimes medications may be needed, including potentially the need for hormone replacement therapy for those who need it,' Gulati clarified. 'Occasionally, some people might need medications to control stress.'
Whether you're feeling stressed or serene, even the heart-healthiest lifestyle isn't a substitute for screening and addressing your risks.
'It is very important to identify risk factors early, implement lifestyle changes and start treatment if needed instead of waiting and postponing,' Mehta urged. 'Seeking a trusted healthcare provider and communicating that you want a heart health assessment/review of risk factors can be helpful.'
'This is an important time to know your numbers,' Gulati added. 'Get your cholesterol checked, know your Lp(a), know your BP, be screened for diabetes, know your short- and long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. Menopause is such a critical time, and things change, including these risk factors, so it is important to be screened and know what, if anything, has changed and what you can do to lower your risk.'

‘Problematic' MAHA report minimizes success of lifesaving asthma medicines, doctors say

(Photo by) Medical experts are dismayed over a federal report's claim that kids are overprescribed asthma medications, saying it minimizes how many lives the drugs save. Safe treatment protocols for asthma management have been carefully studied over the years, said Dr. Perry Sheffield, a pediatrician and professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. 'The federal government actually has some really beautiful and clear guidelines and strategies, and things that are vetted by and carefully edited by many experts in the field,' said Sheffield, who co-directs a region of the federally funded Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units that serves New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Asthma affects more than 4.6 million American children, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's one of the most common long-term diseases in U.S. children. The Make America Healthy Again Commission report released in late May, parts of which have been widely criticized, alleges that American children are on too much medication of various kinds, including asthma treatments. Experts worry that the administration will set policy based on the assessment, dissuading insurers from covering asthma prescriptions. They also say that the report's assertions could worsen disparities that affect children's access to those medications and undermine years of research around the drugs. Blue Cross Blue Shield now requires prior approval for severe asthma drugs in some states The MAHA commission has until August to release a strategy based on the findings in the report. Black and Indigenous children as well as those living in inner cities or in lower-income households are among those with the highest rates of asthma. Pollution disproportionately shrouds communities of color and can be a trigger that exacerbates the disease. The report's message could heighten those disparities, said Dr. Elizabeth Matsui, a University of Texas at Austin professor and a past chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Section on Allergy and Immunology. 'One thing that has been very clear is that kids of color are less likely to be appropriately managed in terms of their asthma medication management,' she said. 'So a message of overprescription that is simply not supported by the evidence also could potentially exacerbate already-existing racial and ethnic disparities in asthma that we have really not made much headway on.' The report touches on childhood prediabetes, obesity and mental health. However, firearm injuries — the leading cause of death for children and teens in 2020 and 2021, according to the CDC — weren't mentioned. The 70-page report from the commission, chaired by Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., claims four main issues are the drivers behind childhood chronic disease: poor diet, aggregation of environmental chemicals, lack of physical activity and chronic stress, and 'overmedicalization.' Matsui and other experts said the report's use of that word is 'problematic.' 'The implication could be, unfortunately, that when a child has asthma — so, they have coughing, chest tightness, wheezing — that that is not really a disease,' said Matsui. 'We know for a fact that that's a disease, and we know that it is quite treatable, quite controllable, and that it has profound impacts on the child's day-to-day life.' Other scientists have similarly criticized the report, saying it makes sweeping and misleading generalizations about children's health without sufficient evidence. The White House corrected the report after nonprofit news outlet NOTUS found that it cited studies that didn't exist. The implication could be, unfortunately, that when a child has asthma … that that is not really a disease. We know for a fact that that's a disease. – Dr. Elizabeth Matsui, University of Texas at Austin professor When it comes to asthma, the report says, 'Asthma controller prescriptions increased 30% from 1999-2008.' That sentence originally cited a broken link to a study from 2011; the link was later replaced. Controller meds include inhalers. The MAHA report also claims that 'There is evidence of overprescription of oral corticosteroids for mild cases of asthma.' The original version of the report listed estimated percentages of oral corticosteroids overuse, citing a nonexistent study. The wording was changed and the citation was later replaced with a link to a 2017 study by pediatric pulmonologist Dr. Harold Farber. The study was not a randomized controlled trial, which increases reliability. Farber told NOTUS that the report made an 'overgeneralization' of his research. Stateline also reached out to Farber, whose public relations team declined an interview request. Oral corticosteroids are liquid or tablet medications used to reduce inflammation for conditions including allergies, asthma, arthritis and Crohn's disease. For asthma, they're used to treat severe flare-up episodes. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America says the medications have been shown to reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations, and that while they do come with risk of side effects, they're mostly used in acute flare-ups. And while rare, asthma-related deaths in kids do occur, and are often preventable. 'Asthma medications, including oral steroids, are lifesaving,' said Dr. Elizabeth Friedman, a pediatrician at Children's Mercy Kansas City. 'I believe that physicians, not politicians, are best equipped and most effectively trained to make the determination of whether or not these medications are needed for our patients.' Friedman worries that federal characterizations of asthma meds will affect how state Medicaid agencies cover the drugs. When Medicaid coverage changed for a common prescribed inhaler last year, many of her Missouri Medicaid patients were suddenly without the drug. They ended up hospitalized, she said. Friedman directs Region 7 of the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units, a network of experts that works to address reproductive and children's environmental health issues. Region 7 provides outreach and education in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. She also said she's concerned that the report is 'making a broad, sweeping statement based on one epidemiologic study from one state.' An increase in inhaler prescriptions is not necessarily a bad thing, experts say. It's a sign that kids are getting their medication. There has been an increase in inhaler prescriptions, along with a corresponding decrease in the oral corticosteroids, which is what experts would want to see, said Chelsea Langer, bureau chief of the New Mexico Department of Health's Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau. She said that means kids are 'following their asthma action plans and taking the controller medications to prevent needing the relief or treatment [oral] meds.' Trump has canceled environmental justice grants. Here's what communities are losing. Asthma prevalence has increased over the years, meaning more people need medication, noted Dr. Alan Baptist, division head of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Henry Ford Health in Michigan. He said that because steroid tablets come with risk of side effects, it is best to limit them. But for kids without access to a regular pediatric provider or to health insurance that covers an inhaler, cost can be an obstacle, he said. Fluticasone propionate, an FDA-approved medicine for people 4 and older, costs on average $200 or more for one inhaler without insurance. 'What often happens with kids, and especially kids who are in Medicaid, or who are in an underserved or disadvantaged population, they are not given appropriate asthma controller medication,' said Baptist, who helped write federal guidelines for asthma treatment best practices as part of a National Institutes of Health committee. Baptist noted that while he was glad to see pollution mentioned in the report as a danger for kids, it's at odds with the recent cuts to environmental health grants that aimed to address such asthma triggers. 'They're somewhat cherry-picking some of the data that they're putting down,' he said. 'It says the U.S. government is 'committed to fostering radical transparency and gold-standard science' to better understand the potential cumulative impacts of environmental exposure. If that's what they're saying, then they should be funding even greater studies that look at the effects.' Dr. Priya Bansal, an Illinois pediatrician and past president of the Illinois Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, said she's concerned the report doesn't define mild, moderate or severe asthma to differentiate the different best-practice treatment plans. Bansal also said she worries that federal officials' characterization of an FDA-approved drug will lead to insurance companies refusing to cover inhalers or oral steroids for her patients who rely on them. 'I'm going to be worried about coverage for my asthmatics,' she said. 'The question is, what's the next move that they're going to make? If they think that, are they going to now say, 'Hey, we're not going to cover inhalers for mild asthmatics'?' Op-Ed: Care For Constituents Or Chaos? Medicaid Cuts Will Devastate All Of Us
Source: Jemal Countess / Getty In our country, which has so much abundance, poverty shouldn't be a death sentence. However, proposed cuts to Medicaid will cause many individuals, families and communities to suffer for that very reason–poverty. Significant and potentially massive cuts to Medicaid will cause irreparable harm. Shockwaves will reverberate in rural, urban, and suburban communities, and impact individuals, working families, many of our most fragile elderly and our most vulnerable young and disabled. I offer this perspective as a public health practitioner. I have spent my career supporting and advancing health systems in our country, across Louisiana, the Gulf Coast, and in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., Medicaid supports our workforce and health systems (hospitals and clinics), in addition to individuals, families, and communities Medicaid provides insurance to people with low incomes and people who have disabilities. This includes many individuals who work, but still don't work jobs with health insurance, work part-time, or don't make enough to cover insurance. It is the nation's single largest health insurance program. And it is wildly popular. More than 96% of Americans believe the program is important in their communities and recent national polls from January 2025 found that 80% of Americans have a favorable view of Medicaid. Some may wonder if I am overreacting. I'm not. More than 70 million Americans receive health care coverage under the Medicaid program. In Louisiana, where I live, one-third of our adult population is on Medicaid, and the percentage of coverage is even higher in rural areas. In fact, Medicaid plays a much larger role in covering rural communities in Louisiana and across our country than it does in metro/areas. In other parts of the South, like rural Kentucky, more than 40% of the population is on Medicaid. These individuals, like all of us, want nothing more than to live healthy and thriving lives while making ends meet for their families and making their children's futures more prosperous. The public may envision people on Medicaid as unworthy of receiving assistance. But there is no one profile of a Medicaid recipient. They come from all backgrounds, all races and ethnicities, all ages and all communities. In fact, most low-income Americans, whether rural or urban, Black or White, Republican or Democrat, share an economic fate impacted by hardship, and the solution to their support and prosperity is also shared. For instance, 'The number of people earning less than $25,750 for a family of four is rising in both Republican and Democratic districts, and across racial and geographic lines.' It's also important to understand the range of services people receive from Medicaid. Services include everything from general health services, to behavioral health (mental health and substance use) services, disability services, maternal health supports and more. Impacts across all of these areas could be devastating with federal and state cuts to beneficiaries or benefits. For example, maternal health outcomes, particularly maternal mortality, continue to devastate families and communities across our country. Louisiana had the nation's fourth-highest maternal mortality rate in 2021 at 60.9 deaths per 100,000 births, but I know this is not just a Louisiana problem; it's a national one. The March of Dimes reported that '870 maternal deaths occurred each year…and every year 50,000 women experience a life-threatening complication (sometimes called a near-miss)' or severe maternal health complication. With such high risk, good coverage and high-quality care is more important than ever, and over 42% of all births in our country are covered by Medicaid. Reducing these Medicaid benefits would be disastrous to mothers, babies and families. Chancing the lives of mothers and babies is simply too risky! While I referenced maternal health, Medicaid supports the existence of healthier communities. Beyond the immediacy of illness, sick people can't work, study, or play. They can't contribute to their families, our communities, and the country's economy—from kids, to employers, to the GDP, everyone loses. Our nation's health systems, from rural health centers to large urban hospital systems receive critical funding to cover the millions of peoples seeking care. The healthcare sector, one of the most important sectors of our economy overall, relies heavily on Medicaid reimbursement to sustain jobs and services. Cuts of great magnitude will threaten clinics, hospitals and medical providers. We will see the impacts of this immediately in rural regions with the shuttering of services, significant job losses, and further diminishing already challenged access to care. With health care shortages already existing, our conversations need to be continued around closing the gaps in access, not creating new chasms. Now more than ever, we need our leaders and legislative champions to protect our communities and their health and well-being! Given the adverse impact Medicaid cuts would have on the nation, we need to boldly reject proposals that will weaken the program and impact all of our communities. Given its importance, some may wonder why elected leaders would want to cut the program. Some legislators propose cutting Medicaid as part of a broader plan to give $4.5 trillion in tax cuts. Others want to lower the federal deficit, a $1.1 trillion deficit at the end of February 2025. Policymakers should not attempt to bring down federal spending with ill-conceived strategies that will only add to Americans' suffering. They should instead think strategically about taxation. Legislators can bring a great deal of confidence in their leadership by examining other alternatives to drastic Medicaid cuts, by reminding us that they care for all of their constituents, and that they are creating a vision for a healthier future based on their community's needs—timely doctors' visits, healthy births, high quality mental health care and substance use supports—not disregarding, or even worse targeting the thing that keeps us safe and well. 7 Everyday Uses For Organic Coconut Oil

Rows of body washes, oils, exfoliating gloves, probiotics, tongue scrapers, herbs, and serums—all organized with precision and narrated with pride. And rightfully so. There's something powerful about seeing Black women create a space for themselves that's the gold standard of soft, sacred, luxurious care. But what makes me smile most is the way so many of those routines include the one thing that's been a staple in our community for generations, coconut oil. While the algorithm is just catching on, we been knew. Coconut oil has been in our bathrooms, kitchens, and medicine cabinets long before it was trending. Long before hashtags and Amazon storefronts, our mamas, aunties, and grandmothers were teaching us how to stay clean, moisturized, and ready. One of the first lessons I ever got in holistic hygiene came from my mother, a Southern Black woman with wisdom laced in everything she did. She taught me how to oil pull with coconut oil for fresh breath and gum health—before I ever heard the term 'oral microbiome.' Back then, it wasn't a wellness trend. It was tradition. So let me tell you why coconut oil is not only TikTok-approved, but soul-approved—and why every woman, especially Black women, should always have a few bottles in her life. 1. It's The Original Multi-Tasker—Because Simplicity Is Luxury We live in a time where everybody's trying to sell you something new. But coconut oil is that old-school, ride-or-die kind of product that shows up for you every time. It's moisturizer, deep conditioner, lip balm, shaving oil, cooking base, wood polish, diaper rash treatment—and still has room to surprise you. When life is complicated, this one simple jar feels like peace. And that's a luxury our mamas and grandmamas understood without needing to hashtag it. 2. It Loves On Our Hair—Because Black Hair Deserves Deep, Intentional Nourishment There's nothing like the bond between a Black woman and her hair. And coconut oil has been part of that story for generations. Whether it's massaging it into your scalp with a little peppermint oil, blending it into your shea butter mix, or using it to seal in moisture after a twist-out, coconut oil is the truth. It strengthens, softens, and adds shine without weighing down the hair. And when used with care, it becomes more than a product—it's a ritual. One that reconnects us to our roots—literally and spiritually. 3. It Heals And Protects Our Skin—Because Black Don't Crack…But We Still Moisturize Yes, sis—Black don't crack. But let's be real: it still gets dry, ashy, irritated, and exposed to the same environmental stressors as everyone else. Coconut oil is a blessing for melanin-rich skin. It helps fade scars, soothe eczema, soften stretch marks, and protect that glow we were born with. Use it straight out the shower. Add it to a sugar scrub. Mix it with lavender oil and give yourself a foot rub like the queen you are. Your skin will thank you—and your selfies will show it. 4. It Removes Makeup Gently—Because Softness Is A Form of Strength At the end of the day, when the lashes come off and the beat gets wiped away, you need something that respects your face as much as you do.
