NWSL MVP Temwa Chawinga signs contract extension with Kansas City Current
The Kansas City Current have signed National Women's Soccer League Most Valuable Player Temwa Chawinga to a three-year contract extension.
The deal announced Wednesday would keep the forward from Malawi with the Current through the 2028 season.
Last season, her first with the team, Chawinga led the league with an NWSL single-season record of 20 goals. She also won the league's Golden Boot.
'My team has been good to me and they treated me well last season. My teammates are kind, my coach is amazing, and my KC community has been incredible,' Chawinga said in a statement released by the team. 'All the support, it feels like home here, that's why I decided to extend my contract with the KC Current.'
The 26-year-old set records with an eight-game scoring streak and became the first player to score against all the league's other teams in a single season since the NWSL expanded to 10 teams. She also had six assists.
'Securing Temwa's long-term future in Kansas City was a significant priority this offseason,' Current general manager Caitlin Carducci said. 'She had an amazing debut season, but both Temwa and our club feel that we are just getting started in reaching our potential together.'
Chawinga's previous contract with Kansas City ran through the 2025 season.

PayPal Park, Bay FC's home stadium in San Jose, will host the 2025 NWSL championship game on Nov. 22, the league announced on Friday morning. The league's championship contest was held at Kansas City's women's soccer-specific CPKC Stadium last season and Audi Field in Washington, D.C., the season prior. Santa Clara's Levi Stadium will host six games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. PayPal Park has previously hosted the NCAA College Cup, most recently in 2019, but has never hosted an NWSL postseason contest. The 2025 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Championship is heading to the Bay Area. San Jose's 18,000-seat PayPal Park, the home stadium of Bay FC and Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, will host this year's title match, the league announced Thursday. The championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 22 with a 5 p.m. PT kickoff for the fourth straight year. It will be broadcast on CBS and stream on Paramount+. The Bay Area houses some of the top collegiate programs in the nation in Stanford, Santa Clara, and Cal. In 2010, the Bay Area-based FC Gold Pride claimed the title in the now-defunct Women's Professional Soccer league with a roster bursting with star players, including Marta, Christine Sinclair, Shannon Boxx and Camille Abily. 'The history of women's soccer runs deeply and strongly in the Bay Area,' said Bay FC co-founder and former USWNT player Brandi Chastain. Weary Gotham FC looking to get back into NWSL playoff picture
There's a busy schedule, and then there's what Gotham FC has. 'I don't think there's a team that works harder in this league than Gotham,' owner Carolyn Tisch Blodgett said last weekend. Advertisement Three weeks ago, the team was in Monterrey, Mexico, claiming the inaugural CONCACAF W Champions Cup — an achievement that was celebrated Tuesday night, when the Empire State Building was lit up in Gotham blue. Then it was off to international duty for many of the team's standouts. Then, Gotham (3W-3D-5L) returned to regular-season NWSL play, losing a 2-1 decision to first-place Kansas City on Saturday that dropped them to 10th place in the 14-team league. Advertisement Two more NWSL tilts to try to claw up the standings — starting with Friday night's road game against the Utah Royals (9:30 p.m. Eastern) — and then it's time for a month-plus-long international break that for a sizable chunk of the roster isn't a break at all as they scatter to the corners of the world to play for their national teams. 'Our team knows that if they want it easy, they probably wouldn't have come to Gotham,' Tisch Blodgett said. 'We have high standards. New York, New Jersey has high standards, and players come here because they want to compete with the best.' 'When we came in as new owners last year, we set a vision to be the first global women's sports franchise, and this is a critical step in that.' Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amoros said he believes his team is in a 'good place' despite their recent struggles in NWSL games. Gotham has lost three straight regular-season matches on either side of all their extracurriculars, though head coach Juan Carlos Amoros, typically the optimist, said Thursday, 'I think the team is in a good place.' Still, the stakes against Utah (1W-2D-8L) are heightened with Gotham in desperate need of three points. 'If you're in the bottom of the league, everything counts, every single shot, every single duel. If we don't get it right, we can actually end up even lower, and I think all the girls know that,' Berger said. 'And I think Utah actually have a really good team, and I think they're playing really nice soccer.'
