A luxury travel bubble is swelling
As the luxury category has swelled to encompass both the uber-rich and aspirational splurgers, travel companies have been quick to invest. PHOTO: AFP
When you go on vacation, do you ever treat yourself to an upgraded airline seat? Or book the (admittedly cheapest) room at a five-star hotel? Maybe splurge on a spa day or celebratory Michelin-starred meal? If any of this sounds familiar, you may be what the travel industry calls an 'aspirational' luxury traveller. And much to the industry's potential dismay, you're also inflating an economic bubble that may be about to burst.
According to McKinsey, the aspirational set, defined as those with between US$100,000 (S$129,000) and US$1 million in net worth, now accounts for 35 per cent of the global luxury travel market. In 2023, they spent US$84 billion on high-end vacations, a figure expected to grow to US$107 billion by 2028. That purchasing power has helped turn luxury travel from a glamorous niche into a major profit centre, sparking a race among airlines, hotels, cruise lines, tour companies and the rest to cater to and capture this market segment.

US, China begin key trade talks in London

PHOTO: AFP LONDON - China and the United States began a new round of trade talks in London on June 9, Beijing's state media reported, as the world's two biggest economies seek to shore up a shaky truce after bruising tit-for-tat tariffs. The two sides are meeting in the historic Lancaster House, run by the UK Foreign Office, following a first round of talks in Geneva in May. Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng was again heading the team in London. Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported the start of the talks. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are leading the US delegation, President Donald Trump said on June 6. 'The meeting should go very well,' Mr Trump said on his Truth Social platform. His press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, told Fox News on June 8: 'We want China and the United States to continue moving forward with the agreement that was struck in Geneva.' While the UK government reiterated that it was not involved in the discussions, a spokesperson said: 'We are a nation that champions free trade.' UK authorities 'have always been clear that a trade war is in nobody's interests, so we welcome these talks', the spokesperson added. Rare earths The talks in London come just a few days after Mr Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping finally held their first publicly announced telephone talks since the Republican returned to the White House. Mr Trump said June 5's call reached a 'very positive conclusion'. Mr Xi was quoted by Xinhua as saying 'correcting the course of the big ship of Sino-US relations requires us to steer well and set the direction'. Tensions between the two nations have soared, with Mr Trump accusing Beijing of violating a tariff de-escalation deal reached in Geneva in mid-May. A key issue will be Beijing's shipments of rare earths – crucial to a range of goods including electric vehicle batteries and which have been a bone of contention for some time. 'Rare earth shipments from China to the US have slowed since President Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs in April,' said Ms Kathleen Brooks, research director at trading group XTB. 'The US wants these shipments to be reinstated, while China wants the US to rethink immigration curbs on students, restrictions on access to advanced technology including microchips, and to make it easier for Chinese tech providers to access US consumers,' she added. In April, Mr Trump introduced sweeping worldwide tariffs that targeted China most heavily. At one point, Washington hit Beijing with additional levies of 145 per cent on its goods, prompting China to respond with tariffs reaching 125 per cent on US goods. After two days of talks in Switzerland, both sides agreed to slash the eye-watering tariffs for 90 days, but key differences remain – especially over China's rare earth export restrictions. The impact was reflected in the latest official export data released on June 9 in Beijing. Exports to the United States fell 12.7 per cent in May from the previous month, with China shipping US$28.8 billion (S$37 billion) worth of goods. This was down from US$33 billion in April, according to Beijing's General Administration of Customs. 'Green channel' Throughout its talks with Washington, China has also launched discussions with other trading partners – including Japan and South Korea – to try to build a united front to counter Mr Trump's tariffs. On June 5, Beijing and Canada agreed to regularise their channels of communication after strained ties. Beijing has also proposed establishing a 'green channel' to ease exports of rare earths to the European Union, and fast-tracking approval of some export licenses. China is expected to host a summit with the EU in July, marking 50 years since Beijing and Brussels established diplomatic ties. According to a spokesperson for Mr Starmer, Britain's finance minister Rachel Reeves took advantage of the talks in London to meet with her US counterpart Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng on June 8. ‘Quantum leap': Nato chief Mark Rutte calls for 400% increase in air and missile defence

Mr Rutte is pushing for members to boost defence spending to 3.5 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) and commit a further 1.5 per cent to broader security-related spending to meet US President Donald Trump's demand for a 5 per cent target. In May , he said he assumed that the target would be agreed at the summit on June 24 and 25. Mr Rutte will argue in a speech at London's Chatham House think-tank that for Nato to maintain credible deterrence and defence, it needs 'a 400 per cent increase in air and missile defence'. 'We see in Ukraine how Russia delivers terror from above, so we will strengthen the shield that protects our skies,' he will say, according to extracts of his speech provided by his office. 'The fact is, we need a quantum leap in our collective defence. The fact is, we must have more forces and capabilities to implement our defence plans in full. The fact is, danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends.' With little let up in fighting in Russia's war against Ukraine despite ceasefire calls, European countries are under pressure to raise defence spending after Mr Trump signalled a shift in policy, pushing for the region to better protect itself. Several countries say they are doing so, with Britain pledging an increase from 2.3 per cent to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2027 and 3 per cent of GDP at a later date. Train service between Moscow and North Korea's Pyongyang to resume this month, says Russia Russia and North Korea plan to restart a direct passenger train service between Moscow and the North Korean capital Pyongyang this month for the first time since 2020, Russia's state-owned rail monopoly said on Monday. Russian Railways said it had agreed with North Korea's railways ministry to resume a twice-monthly service between the two capitals on June 17, a journey it said took eight days and which, at over 10,000 km (6,213 miles), was the longest direct rail journey in the world. Another service between Pyongyang and Khabarovsk, a Russian city close to China's northeastern border, will restart two days later. The services will be operated by Korean State Railway, the state operator, and in the case of the Moscow-Pyongyang route will see a North Korean passenger railcar hitched to the regular Moscow-Vladivostok service and then re-attached to another train. Passenger rail traffic between Russia and North Korea was suspended in February 2020 at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Moscow and Pyongyang have since ratcheted up cooperation, including in the military sphere since President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty last year. North Korea confirmed in late April that it had sent more than 10,000 troops and weapons to Russia to assist in its war in Ukraine, aid which proved crucial for Moscow in recapturing Russia's western Kursk region from Ukraine. The two countries already operate a passenger rail service between Vladivostok in Russia's Far East and Rason, a North Korean port city. The nations are also linked by freight rail networks, although Russia does not disclose the size of the cargo traffic.
