Top MLB prospect faces embarrassing setback after getting called up to the big leagues by Boston Red Sox

Daily Mail25-05-2025

Saturday began like any other day for Boston Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer as he was set to play for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox that evening.
That was, until the call came. Alex Bregman, Boston's starting third baseman, was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right quad strain suffered in a game on Friday.
In his stead, Mayer was called up to take the drive 45 minutes across Interstate 90 from Polar Park to Fenway Park.
There was just one problem: Mayer couldn't drive himself to Boston. Mayer lost the keys to his car 'like three weeks ago' and wasn't able to drive himself to the ballpark.
So, hilarious images of Mayer jumping out of the back seat of a car with his glove circulated as the California native prepared for his first at-bats in the big leagues.
Mayer said that a clubhouse staff member was the one that drove him to Fenway.

Saturday was a day of big change for Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer as he made his debut
The topsy-turvy day may have had an effect on Mayer at the plate as he went 0-for-4
On a big day for the Red Sox No. 2 prospect - and MLB's No. 8 prospect - Mayer may have been a little jolted by the day's turn of events.
He struggled at the plate in the second game of Boston's doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles, going 0-for-4 in the Red Sox's 2-1 loss.
But his first at-bat in the majors was met with resounding applause and a standing ovation from the Fenway faithful.
'It was awesome,' he said. 'I've never experienced anything like that before in my life.
'I actually just got done texting my friends and parents about that moment. That's something I'll remember the rest of my life.'
But he admitted that those big-league nerves may have gotten to him at the plate.
'I felt like I tried to do too much with runners on base,' Mayer said. 'I feel like next time I've got to do a better job than that.'
He'll get a chance at redemption on Sunday when the Red Sox battle the Orioles again in the fourth game of their Memorial Day Weekend series. Dean Kremer is set to take the mound for Baltimore while Boston turns to Walker Buehler.

Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) to miss minicamp

June 5 - Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson aggravated the AC joint in his right shoulder and will not participate in next week's minicamp, head coach Shane Steichen announced Thursday. Richardson reported soreness and will rest his ailing shoulder, the same one that required AC joint surgery in 2023. Surgery is not anticipated this time around, per Steichen, who said the plan is for Richardson to return "at some point" in training camp. "Doctors, trainers checked it out," Steichen explained. "He's got some aggravation in his AC joint. So we're gonna sit him out this week. Obviously, he'll sit out for minicamp. We'll see when he comes back. Not gonna put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we'll ease him into throwing, and then we'll go from there. The good thing is he's not gonna need a procedure right now." Richardson, the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, is expected to battle Daniel Jones for the Colts' starting quarterback job this season. "Obviously, it's frustrating, but he is in good spirits," Steichen said. "So we're working through it right now." Richardson, 23, enters his third season with 15 starts under his belt (8-7 record), a 50.6 completion percentage, 11 touchdown passes, 10 rushing touchdowns, 13 interceptions and 12 fumbles (four lost). He completed 47.7 percent of his passes in 2024, historically bad from an accuracy perspective and easily the worst among NFL starters. He had 10 or fewer completions in six of the 11 games he appeared in last season. --Field Level Media

D-backs' Andrew Saalfrank reinstated from betting ban

June 5 - The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated pitcher Andrew Saalfrank from the ineligible list on Thursday, marking the end of his one-year suspension for betting on baseball games. The Diamondbacks optioned the 27-year-old left-hander to the Arizona Complex League. The team designated right-hander Scott McGough for assignment to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. On June 4, 2024, Major League Baseball announced a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano for betting on baseball games. Saalfrank, Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and two minor leaguers received one-year bans for violating the league's sports betting rules and policies. An MLB investigation found that Saalfrank placed small-scale bets on big-league games while he was in the minors. He wagered a total of $445 over 29 bets, including four involving Diamondbacks games. Saalfrank made two relief appearances for Arizona in 2024 and allowed four runs in one inning of work. In 2023, he made 10 scoreless relief appearances in the regular season and posted a 3.18 ERA in 11 postseason appearances, including three scoreless outings against the Texas Rangers in the World Series. McGough, 35, has no decisions and a 6.43 ERA in seven relief appearances this season. He is 3-10 with a 5.86 ERA and nine saves in 102 career games (three starts) for the Miami Marlins (2015) and Diamondbacks (2023-25). --Field Level Media
