Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth is gearing up for one of golf's toughest tests: the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, set to tee off on Thursday.

As the PGA Tour season heats up, Spieth finds himself in familiar territory, competing among golf's elite, while also weighing in on a question that has ignited debate across sports: Who is the best American athlete right now?
In a video posted by the PGA Tour on X on Wednesday, Spieth was among several Tour pros asked to name the best American athlete currently competing.
Without a moment's hesitation, Spieth pointed to NBA superstar Stephen Curry, stating, "I mean, I love Steph Curry. Is he the greatest athlete in the world right now? He's probably one of them."
With both being flagship Under Armour athletes, Spieth and Curry have a long history together.

Spieth extended his Under Armour apparel and footwear deal in 2022 to run through 2029, serving as one of the brand's premier golf ambassadors.
Curry, meanwhile, has been with Under Armour since 2013, launching his own Curry Brand sub-label in 2020 and starring in joint promotional and charitable events alongside Spieth as cross-sport ambassadors for the company.
So, Spieth's endorsement of Curry comes as no surprise.

Even still, his pick isn't entirely inaccurate.
Curry's haul of four NBA championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022), two MVP awards (including the only unanimous vote in 2016) and status as the NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers (4,058) already make him one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Combine this with a 2024 Olympic gold medal and his transformative impact on basketball, ushering in the era of the 3-point revolution, and Curry's resume argues compellingly for his standing as America's top athlete right now.

Knicks' Jalen Brunson talks firing of Tom Thibodeau, what former coach has meant to his career

It's been more than a week since the Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau, and while the basketball world and players like Josh Hart have voiced their thoughts on the job Thibodeau has done for the team, we haven't heard from team captain Jalen Brunson. Brunson was very close to Thibodeau, with his father Rick Brunson working as Thibodeau's assistant with the Bulls, Timberwolves and Knicks. When the Knicks were ousted from the NBA Playoffs after Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Brunson defended his coach when asked about Thibodeau's ability to get this team over the top. Advertisement However, the organization decided to go in a different direction and Brunson has finally spoken for the first time after the decision on the June 12 episode of the Roommates Show, his podcast with Hart. Both players spoke about the firing and what Thibodeau meant to them. 'We want to give a shoutout to Thibs, man, you know, especially for myself,' Hart started. 'He helped make me into the player I am. I had a lot of instability in the early part of my career and he gave me that stability and that opportunity to flourish as a player in the league, a starter in the league, so I'm always going to be forever grateful for him. "This is always a tough part of the NBA because you grow relationships not just on the court but off the court and personal relationships, so I always got love for him. It's always tough when there's a coaching change." Brunson, who was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks and only had a coach change on him once when Rick Carlisle resigned to sign with the Pacers, so this is uncharted territory for the All-Star guard. Brunson chose to highlight what Thibodeau has done for his career since signing with New York. Advertisement 'This is my first firing. Obviously, I've known him my entire life, but I remember having conversations and moments with him in 8th grade when we moved to Chicago. And to see where he helped me become two-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA. The things he's done for me individually, I'm so grateful for," Brunson said. "He had that confidence in me that I knew I had, but it's great to see someone push me to be better…. to have Thibs, and to do what he did for my career, I'm so grateful and thankful for. Not enough things can be said about what he's meant to myself and my career.' When both were asked if they had any inkling that the firing would happen or if Thibodeau was on the hot seat, Hart who has had multiple coaching changes in his eight-year career, put it best. "We had a really good year. It didn't end how we wanted it to end. Sometimes when the season doesn't end the way you expect it to, there's always changes. Whether that's coaches, players," Hart said. "Thibs is my sixth coach in eight years. The NBA coaching profession is tough. Whenever you don't finish the way you expect, there's always gonna be changes. That one was a tough one. There should be nothing but praise for him and his time in New York.' 'I agree. 100 percent,' Brunson responded. Advertisement Thibodeau joined the Knicks ahead of the 2019-20 season, and in five seasons, he amassed a 226-174 record in the regular season, going 24-23 in the playoffs. He coached the Knicks to the playoffs in four of his five seasons, had back-to-back 50-win seasons and took New York to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years. Whoever becomes the next coach of the Knicks will have big shoes to fill. "[Thibodeau] took that job when the Knicks were just buns," Hart, who was traded to the Knicks in 2023, said. "They were 20 wins. He got that job for five years, made the playoffs in four years, first Eastern Conference Finals in 25 years. He helped Knicks basketball go back to the top level in the league. He should get a lot of credit for the foundation that he built."

U.S. Open 2025 leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy all chasing J.J. Spaun

The third major championship of the season is here, and all eyes were on Scottie Scheffler as he teed off in the afternoon wave of the 125th U.S. Open. But it's Scheffler whose eyes are looking up the leaderboard. The world No. 1 struggled in Round 1, carding a 3-over 73. That leaves him seven shots back of leader J.J. Spaun, who went bogey-free in his round of 66. Advertisement As for Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau, it was a grind, with both struggling to remain in contention after their first rounds. DeChambeau is in with a 3-over 73, while McIlroy shot a 4-over 74. Scheffler started off the week as the biggest favorite the event has seen in 16 years. And for good reason. He's won three of his last four starts and has absolutely dominated the golf world in recent weeks. He won the PGA Championship by five shots last month, too, to claim his third major championship title. A win for him this week would bring him just a British Open away from completing the career grand slam. But it's going to take Scheffler to better golf in Round 2 if he's to win ... or even make the cut. Stick with Yahoo Sports for all of the updates throughout the opening round of the U.S. Open. PGA Tour to hire NFL executive Brian Rolapp as CEO of business enterprise, AP source says

The PGA Tour is hiring longtime NFL executive Brian Rolapp as the first CEO of its new commercial division, created two years ago when tour reached a tentative agreement with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, The Associated Press confirmed Thursday. Jay Monahan, who announced the framework agreement in June 2023, will stay on as commissioner of the PGA Tour. Monahan announced in December the search for a CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises, now backed by a $1.5 billion investment from Strategic Sports Group . The tour declined comment on the hiring, first reported by Sports Business Journal. A person with direct knowledge of the tour's plans confirmed the hiring, speaking on condition of anonymity because nothing has been announced. Such developments typically are not publicized during major championships. Rolapp has been with the NFL since 2003 and has been executive vice president and chief media and business officer since 2017, working closely with Commissioner Roger Goodell. Sports Business Journal obtained a memo Goodell sent to staff Thursday announcing Rolapp would be leaving to pursue other opportunities. Monahan announced an agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which was never finalized. From that framework agreement came a for-profit arm, PGA Tour Enterprises, which Rolapp would oversee. The tour brought on SSG in January 2024, and soon announced a first-of-its-kind equity plan for players. Monahan said in December of the CEO search, 'We're bringing new perspectives on to our team to help us realize the incredible opportunities ahead for our sport.' Meanwhile, negotiations with PIF to bring the world's best players together stalled in the spring, even with the involvement of President Donald Trump, as LIV Golf wants to keep its team concept in place. LIV Golf since has hired Scott O'Neil as its new CEO. Rolapp brings strong media connections to the PGA Tour which is starting to plan for new broadcast deals that run through 2030. The PGA Tour has seen a strong uptick this year through extensive feedback with its fans, including a recent decision to revamp the Tour Championship to crown its FedEx Cup champion. Arthur Blank, the Atlanta Falcons owner who is part of SSG, was part of the search committee that included Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, Monahan, PGA Tour board chairman Joe Gorder and Sam Kennedy from SSG. ___ AP golf: Error!
