Bellamy explains why he's banned Wales players from swapping shirts after games

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Wales continue their World Cup qualifying campaign next week, hosting Liechtenstein and then making the trip to face Belgium, who are heavy favourites to win the group
Craig Bellamy has told his Wales players to 'honour the shirt' and not swap jerseys with Kevin De Bruyne and company after their World Cup qualifier in Belgium. Wales resume their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup finals this week with a double header at home to Liechtenstein and away to star-studded Belgium.
Taking on the Red Devils in their Brussels backyard is Wales' biggest test in Group J, but boss Bellamy believes the culture and mentality fostered since his appointment last July and the eight-game unbeaten run that has followed will stand Wales in good stead.

Bellamy insists Wales should not be considered underdogs – 'small footballing nations don't expect to qualify for World Cups, and we do' – and keeping hold of the jersey after the final whistle is among the pillars of his philosophy.

'You have to honour your shirt,' said Bellamy. 'The only time you give it up is when you lose your place and someone else takes it, but you've left it in a good place.
'That's a no-brainer to me and I believe the players love that as well. Our shirt is the most important shirt in football. We don't give that away, you can't give it away.'
Asked if not swapping shirts extended to Belgian midfield maestro De Bruyne, one of the Premier League 's all-time greats at Manchester City, Bellamy replied: 'I don't think it is even worth having a conversation about.

'I don't need to answer that question. It's not going to happen. If I'm an aspiring young player then I want that (Wales) shirt. I see ours as the most important shirt, nobody else's.'
Wales opened their World Cup qualifying campaign in March with a 3-1 home victory over Kazakhstan and a 1-1 draw in North Macedonia. David Brooks equalised with virtually the last kick in Skopje to protect Bellamy's unbeaten record after Wales won promotion to the top tier of the Nations League in the autumn.

Bellamy draws parallels with basic habits on the football field to a 1980s Hollywood martial arts drama success at the box office. 'Have you ever watched The Karate Kid?' said Bellamy.
'Does he do karate straight away? No – it's Mr Miyagi who decides. It's wax on, wax off. He paints the fence. He teaches him all these types of rules before he can do karate, so that he has the disciplines.
'It's about basics, habits. If you don't have that intensity without the ball, if your body language is poor and you're waving your hands, it's the wrong team for you. This is not your team.'

Ex-Celtic winger Daniel Arzani a transfer target for Hearts

Arzani signed for the Hoops on a two-year loan deal from Manchester City back in 2018 but it turned into a nightmare when he suffered an ACL injury on his debut against Dundee, which would turn out to be his only appearance. He had already broken into the Australia international team and showed enough at Melbourne City to persuade the Premier League giants to snap him up, but that injury was a real setback. Loans in the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium helped slowly get his career back on track but it was a move back home with Macarthur that acted as a proper ignition. Hearts are looking to take advantage of that by signing him on a free contract, as reported by Hearts Standard. New manager Derek McInnes has already stressed the importance of wingers for the way he wants to play and it is an area in which they were extremely light last season. Greek wide man Alexandros Kyziridis has already been signed while they are thought to be close to adding Kazakhstan international Islam Chesnokov. Both of those are inverted wingers playing on the opposite side, while Arzani would give the option of a more traditional wide man, although he can also operate on either flank. He has played 64 times for Melbourne Victory and helped them to the A-League series final, where they lost to city rivals and Arzani's former team, Melbourne City.

Flekken 'became one of the best goalkeepers in the league'

Mark Flekken "became one of the best goalkeepers in the league" despite "a tough beginning", says Brentford's goalkeeper coach Manu who made 77 appearances for the Bees after joining from Freiburg in May 2023, has now returned to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen for about £8m."Mark was a great number one for us on and off the pitch," said Sotelo. "Despite a tough beginning, he ended up being a really important player."Offensively, he helped us to play from the back on another level, but not just playing short as he got three assists in two seasons."Defensively, he became a really solid goalkeeper after an uncomfortable transition after changing countries. The Premier League is ruthless, but he became one of the best goalkeepers in the league."He was relentless in training and leading our young goalkeepers. His impact here was massive and we wish him all the best for the future."

Christian Eriksen hints at next transfer with Premier League admission

Christian Eriksen insists there is "interest all around" ahead of his departure from Manchester United as a free agent at the end of June, but he hasn't decided where he will move yet Christian Eriksen says he is hoping to leave England and the Premier League behind this summer. Eriksen will leave Manchester United as a free agent when his contract expires on June 30 and is yet to decide where to move. The 33-year-old midfielder contributed eight goals and 19 assists in 107 matches for United across all competitions since joining on a free transfer in July 2022. But he struggled to win over Ruben Amorim in the 2024/25 season, starting just 11 Premier League games as they finished a lowly 15th, and was not offered a new contract. ‌ After being excused from the post-season trip to Malaysia and Hong Kong in order to marry his partner Sabrina Kvist Jensen, Eriksen is now preparing for international duty. He will be involved in their friendlies against Northern Ireland and Lithuania over the next week, before deciding on his future at club level. ‌ While there is nothing concrete yet, Eriksen is keen to leave England after spending 10 seasons in the Premier League with United, Brentford and Tottenham. The Danish midfielder has also played for Inter Milan and Ajax and wants to find a new experience. 'I would rather get away from the Premier League,' he told Danish TV. 'I feel like I've taken my turn in the Premier League, so I'm looking outside the English borders. It has been a great place for me and my family, and we have been there for many years. "When I moved from Tottenham to Inter, it wasn't my plan to go back to England either. After that I've been there for three and a half years again, so you should never say never. But my priority is that I have to leave." Eriksen has been linked with a move to Danish side Odense, where he spent time as a youngster. But he says, while there is plenty of interest, nothing has been decided. HAVE YOUR SAY! Where will Christian Eriksen end up this summer? Comment below. ‌ 'It's football's rumour mill. I hope no-one has put money on it being now, because then they will lose,' he said. "Right now there is nothing. There is interest all around, but there is nothing where I am close to signing.' He added: "My focus is on playing international matches, and then go on a good summer holiday. Then we will see how long the holiday will be." Eriksen is leaving United as a free agent alongside Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof. Speaking to TNT Sports after the final game of the season, a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in which he scored a penalty, he said: 'It has been a tough season, but I am going to wish them all the best. It is an incredible stadium, an incredible club and I have no doubt I will be back at some point.'
