‘Simply lovely' as Max Verstappen joins pantheon of F1 greats

Gulf News24-11-2024

Kolkata: 'Tu-tu-tu-du, Max Verstappen' goes the opening line of the lyrics of an Anglo-Dutch song by Carte Blanq and Maxx Power titled '33 Max Vertsappen'. Meant as a tribute to the generational talent who sealed his fourth consecutive Drivers' Championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix with a fifth-place finish yesterday, the song is a catchy rendition that even contains the phrase 'simply lovely', often used by the four-time Formula 1 world champion on the team radio after scything through the field to one of his 62 career race wins.
The song was written in 2023 by which time Verstappen had already changed his Red Bull car number from 33 to 1 after winning his first drivers' title at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. His critics — and he has quite a few — still allude to that tumultuous finale, where a quirk of fate — and a pivotal decision by the then race director Michael Masi — handed the title to the prodigiously talented Dutchman as he overtook the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in a one-lap shootout on fresher tyres to claim his first world championship.
The following two years were nothing to write home about with the flying Dutchman in the Adrian Newey-designed RB18 and RB19 simply sweeping away the competition — and truth be told, there was none — to win two more world titles on the canter. This season too seemed like going the same way when the 27-year-old won seven out of the first 10 races. Then came the abrupt change in fortunes as their rivals upgraded their cars leaving the Milton Keynes-based team searching for answers.
But more on that later. Let's go back a few years to see what made Verstappen arguably the fastest-ever driver Formula 1 has seen, as the critics keep upgrading their comparison to the sport's legendary drivers, which currently has only two names that are spoken of in the same breath as Verstappen — Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.
Back in the year 2016, an 18-year-old rookie had replaced Daniil Kvyat in the Red Bull seat for the Spanish Grand Prix. It was a race that first showed the world the remarkable talent of Verstappen. After overtaking his senior teammate Daniel Ricciardo in the first lap, he saw the dominant Mercedes duo of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg take each other out up front, as he went past them to become the youngest driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
If that display of speed and race craft made the world sit up and take notice, the F1 connoisseurs and fans had to rub their eyes in disbelief at what they saw at the Brazilian Grand Prix a few months down the line after the Dutchman had qualified fourth.
In a rain-affected race, he almost hit the barrier after he slid on the main straight due to a loss of traction, causing oversteer, and somehow managed to keep the car on the slippery track. After an additional tyre change from intermediates back to rain tyres, he ran in 16th place with just 15 laps remaining. The youngster then made several audacious overtakes in quick succession during the closing laps to eventually finish on the podium in third place. He received considerable praise for his performance with rival team Mercedes' team principal, Toto Wolff, labelling it 'The Verstappen Show', and describing his drive as 'physics ... being redefined'.
Fast forward 10 years to the Brazilian Grand Prix earlier this month, and the same 'Verstappen Show' played out on the slippery circuit after heavy rain made the track extremely perilous to drive. After going 10 races without a win and seeing his championship rival McLaren's Lando Norris whittle away his lead to within touching distance, Verstappen found himself with his back to the wall after an untimely red flag in Q2 and an engine penalty left him 17th on the starting grid.
What unfolded thereafter was an absolute masterclass, as he went through the field, never once sliding or losing grip and used his mastery on wet conditions with late braking and overtaking off the racing line, even when others were going off track at virtually every turn. It was the race that eventually proved decisive in the title race and really showed the world the stuff he is made of.
Legend has it that his dad Jos, a former F1 driver himself, left his son at a petrol station as punishment in 2012 after the latter crashed out during a major karting championship. Legend also has it that the same Jos had his son driving a kart in pelting rain until his fingers became numb when everyone else had gone indoors. While his methods are up for debate, it definitely reinforced the steel in the junior Verstappen.
'I am not here to finish second', the 4-time world champion had once famously said. His aggressive, no-holds-barred driving style has its share of critics, but no one can deny the greatness of the Red Bull driver who has been breaking records for fun and proving time and again that the comparisons to all-time greats like Senna and Schumacher are definitely not misplaced. His Red Bull contract runs till 2028 and while the Dutchman has said that he has no interest in going past Schumacher and Hamilton's seven titles to prove his greatness, chances are he wouldn't need to in order to be spoken of as a legend of the sport.

The iconic W hotel Abu Dhabi is now doing F1 race viewings

Because if you're going to watch cars tear around a track at 300kph, it may as well be in luxury. W Lounge at W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island has officially entered the F1 chat and it's doing it with all the flair you'd expect from the only hotel in the world built over a Formula 1 circuit. Just in time for the season's high-octane drama, the Yas-side lounge is now screening live races – so you can cheer, gasp and pretend to know what a DRS zone is, all while sinking into a velvet sofa. The vibe? Luxe with a side of race-day chaos. The crowd? A mix of motorsport fans and people who just came for the view (which, to be fair, is stunning). There's no ticket required – it's à la carte, so you're free to go all in on the snacks or just nurse one very good drink. If the race happens to coincide with Sundown Happy Hour, even better. Think discounted sips, DJ beats and a very strong chance of someone shouting 'Let's go, Max!' over a mezze platter. Whether you're in it for the podium or just here for the playlist, this is easily one of the most scenic ways to watch a race that doesn't involve queuing for hours or wearing noise-cancelling headphones. Formula 1, but make it glam. See you trackside(ish). Available during F1 races. W Lounge, W Abu Dhabi, Yas Island. NASCAR goes south of the border to grow fan base with its 1st Cup Series race in Mexico City

NASCAR's first international Cup Series race of the modern era is all about the eyeballs, specifically new fans in the Mexico City market. NASCAR will be on the track Friday for the first of three days of racing at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez, one of the most popular stops on the Formula 1 calendar and Ben Kennedy's newest project. The great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., Kennedy has taken the family business beyond its comfortable confines before. Kennedy in 2022 moved the preseason exhibition Clash from its longtime home at Daytona International Speedway in Florida to a temporary track built inside Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Kennedy this year moved the Clash to The Madhouse - the historic Bowman Gray Stadium, which had last hosted a Cup race in 1971, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. NASCAR under Kennedy also returned to North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina for the first time since 1977 when the All-Star race was moved there three years ago. He allowed dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway, a hybrid road course and oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway, alongside his biggest undertaking: NASCAR's first street race, held in downtown Chicago. The Hooligans Flight Team performs a flyover during pre-race ceremonies prior to the NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan, on Sunday. AFP He also had his eyes set on expanding internationally, which will come Sunday with the first points-paying international race in the Cup Series since 1958. It is only third time in 77 years that NASCAR's top series will run an event that counts in the championship outside the United States. The last two times were in Canada; the Cup Series also has held exhibitions in Japan and Australia. "Our biggest opportunity to grow as a sport is international,' Kennedy said when he announced Mexico City was replacing one of the two races on the schedule allocated to Richmond International Raceway. "The U.S. is always going to be our mainstay and our next opportunity was to expand internationally," he said. "We said we've wanted to do this for a long time, but also needed to make sure it was the right time, the right partners and the right location. Mexico City checked every box. To be in one of the biggest cities globally - over 20 million people that live in the city - is a massive opportunity for us to bring the sport.' The weekend includes the second-tier Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Mexico Series. It's a strong return to a market that devours the entire F1 weekend ticket package within an hour of them becoming available. Mexicans have proven to be rabid motorsports fans but haven't gotten a chance to see NASCAR's big names since 2008, the final year of a four-year run of Xfinity races. Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. were winners during the four-year stretch. Daniel Suarez, the former Xfinity champion and native of Monterrey, is NASCAR's face of the event. He raced the circuit 13 times with a different layout in the NASCAR Mexico Series, and three of Suarez's starts were wins. William Byron, driver of the #24 Raptor Chevrolet, and Michael McDowell, driver of the #71 Delaware Life Chevrolet, race during the NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan, on Sunday. AFP "I'm super excited for the event. I'm super excited to live the moment because the first time is going to only happen once,' Suarez said. "I'm really trying to be as present as possible, enjoy the moment and try to execute the best possible weekend that we can. We know that we are capable of winning the race, but that's not the goal. The goal is the execution of the entire weekend, and hopefully the win is the result of the execution part.' The planning that has gone into Mexico City, one of 38 events on the Cup schedule, began about a year ago. NASCAR has worked on myriad details, beginning with how to get nearly 200 trucks hauling race cars and equipment from Michigan International Speedway into Mexico City. NASCAR official Tom Bryant has spearheaded the organizational logistics and made multiple trips to the border crossing in Laredo, Texas, to meet with customs officials from both nations. The drive from Michigan to Mexico City is about 40 hours, not including the tedious customs crossing, where all the equipment and tools on every NASCAR hauler must be documented on an exhaustive manifest. Cup Series teams cars were scheduled for a Monday night arrival at Laredo, with crossing scheduled for Tuesday and arrival at the track on Thursday. "It's been a ton of coordination moving lots of people and lots of stuff safely and efficiently across a great distance and an international border,' Bryant said on the "Hauler Talk' NASCAR podcast. "There is a lot to it, but the key to it is you just have to define the problem. We've got to get these people and these things from this point to that point within a certain time period," he said. "How do we do it in a way that's going to best position us to be ready to go to work as soon as we hit the ground down there? Because this is a pretty tight window.' Associated Press
