First few pictures of Xabi Alonso in a training session with Madrid players

Xabi Alonso era has started as a manager of one of the greatest teams in football, i.e. Real Madrid. By Ravi Kumar Jha Published on June 10, 2025, 09:38 IST Xabi Alonso era has started as a manager of one of the greatest teams in football, i.e. Real Madrid. He was seen conducting training session for the first time and the photos say how dedicated he is from the first day to manage this world class team. A new chapter has officially begun at the Santiago Bernabéu as Xabi Alonso takes charge of Real Madrid — not as a player this time, but as the manager of one of the most storied clubs in football history. The former midfield maestro, known for his intelligence and composure on the pitch, was seen conducting his very first training session with Los Blancos, marking the start of a highly anticipated managerial era. Photos from the session quickly made waves across social media, capturing Alonso's intense focus and hands-on approach. Dressed in Real Madrid gear and exuding calm authority, the Spanish tactician appeared fully locked in — analyzing every movement, giving tactical instructions, and engaging with players individually. His passion, professionalism, and attention to detail were evident from the get-go. Alonso, who enjoyed immense success at Madrid as a player, now returns with a mission to uphold and enhance the club's legacy. After an impressive spell with Bayer Leverkusen, where he transformed the team into Bundesliga champions, fans and pundits alike are eager to see how his tactical brilliance and winning mentality will shape Real Madrid in the seasons to come. Liverpool transfer news as Al-Nassr 'prepared' to spend $97M on Reds ace

Al-Nassr is reportedly willing to spend $97 million on Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, which could seriously test the Reds' resolve during the summer transfer window. Liverpool has no intention of selling Diaz this summer, but an offer of that magnitude could prompt club bosses to sit up and take notice, particularly considering the player is on course to leave for free in two years' time. Advertisement Liverpool made it clear to Barcelona last week that Diaz is not for sale after rebuffing an approach from the Catalan club. However, there is said to be little expectation that Diaz will pen an extension to his current contract at Liverpool, which is due to expire in 2027. READ MORE: Trent Alexander-Arnold's Real Madrid presentation planned as Club World Cup plan emerges READ MORE: Darwin Nunez transfer deadline emerges thanks to Viktor Gyokeres' snub Liverpool has reportedly attempted to address Diaz's contract situation but little progress has been made, and rather than sell him this summer, the club would prefer to maximize his performance value over the next two years and allow him to leave for nothing following the 2026-27 season. Advertisement However, the Reds would surely reassess that stance were they to receive an offer of just under $100 million for the 28-year-old winger. Diaz is currently on the same terms that he agreed when he signed for Liverpool in January 2022. As such, he's paid far less than some of the Reds' biggest stars. But he was an important player for Arne Slot's team this season and Sky Sports claimed earlier this year that Liverpool was set to offer a deal that reflected his status. A new deal, though, doesn't appear to be in the offing, and unless something changes in the next couple of years, Diaz is on course to leave for nothing in two years' time, when he will be 30 years old. According to Capology, Diaz — who has also been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League — currently earns £55,000 ($73,000) per week, which is significantly lower than players of a similar standing in the squad. Advertisement Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Federico Chiesa are all reported to earn more than double the amount that Diaz takes home, and Diaz could be forgiven for finding that galling given Chiesa has barely played all season and the Colombian has scored more goals than Gakpo, Nunez, and Jota. Meanwhile, Liverpool reportedly wants Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt as a replacement for Darwin Nunez, who will almost certainly leave Anfield this summer. Nunez has spent three seasons at Anfield and he saw his game time reduce dramatically following the arrival of Arne Slot at Anfield last summer. Clubs in Saudi Arabia, as well as Atletico Madrid, are interested in Nunez, and @AdlerNews — an Eintracht Frankfurt news account on X — says that Liverpool wants Ekitike to replace the Uruguayan.

Goals galore in third instalment of Stanley Cup Final

Defending champions Florida capitalised on Edmonton's worst performance in weeks to thrash the Oilers in Game 3 for a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final. Brad Marchand and Sam Bennett scored again, Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe each got their first goal in the series as the Panthers registered a 6-1 rout on Monday night. THE PANTHERS TAKE THE SERIES LEAD!! 😼 Catch Game 4 of the #StanleyCup Final between the @EdmontonOilers and @FlaPanthers Thursday, June 12 at 8p ET on @NHL_On_TNT, @SportsonMax, @Sportsnet, and @TVASports! — NHL (@NHL) June 10, 2025 Marchand became the oldest player to score in each of the first three games of a final and the first to open the scoring the next time out after notching an overtime winner. His 11 goals in the final are the most among active players, one more than similarly ageless Corey Perry. Bennett added his NHL playoff-leading 14th goal, just the second at home, after making a big hit on Edmonton's Vasily Podkolzin that contributed to the turnover to spring him on a breakaway. Marchand and Bennett have combined to score eight of Florida's 13 goals in the series. But it was not just them this time. Verhaeghe buried a perfect shot into the net under the cross bar on the power play, Reinhart made up for missing the net on an earlier attempt, Aaron Ekblad scored to chase Stuart Skinner on the fifth goal on 23 shots and Evan Rodrigues added the exclamation point in the waning minutes. At the other end of the ice, Sergei Bobrovsky earned the "Bobby! Bobby!" chants from a fired up South Florida crowd. The two-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender known as "Bob" was on his game for the very few quality chances the disjointed Oilers mustered, making 32 saves. Perry - at 40 the oldest player in the series - beat Bobrovsky with some silky hands for a power-play goal, keeping up this final being a showcase of cagey veterans along with Marchand. Connor McDavid could not get his team on track, and Edmonton took 15 minors - led by Evander Kane's three plus a misconduct to add up to 85 penalty minutes - including a brawl that ensued with less than 10 minutes left. Trent Frederic and Darnell Nurse, who fought Jonah Gadjovich, got misconducts that knocked them out of a game with an outcome determined long before. After the final looked as evenly matched as can be with Games 1 and 2 each needing extra time, overtime and then double OT, Game 3 was a lopsided mismatch. The Oilers came unglued to the point Jake Walman resorted to squirting water on Panthers players on their bench from his spot on the visiting side. The teams have some extra time off before Game 4 on Thursday night, when the Panthers have the chance to take a 3-1 lead and move to the verge of going back to back.
