David Shapiro and Daniel Williams: Story of the Year, Sum 41 Music Agent and Ex-Devil Wears Prada Drummer Killed in San Diego Private Jet Crash

David Shapiro, 42, a big shot in the music industry, was confirmed as one of the victims of the plane crash in San Diego on Thursday, according to his agency. Meanwhile, Daniel Williams, the former drummer for The Devil Wears Prada, is also believed to be killed in the crash.
Shapiro was a co-founder of Sound Talent Group (STG), a booking agency that represents popular bands such as Sum 41, Story of the Year, and Parkway Drive. "We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues and friends ... Thank you so much for respecting their privacy at this time," the agency said in a statement shared with Billboard.
Tragic Death of Stars
Just before the flight took off, Williams shared on his Instagram Stories what appeared to be a photo of the ill-fated plane, captioned "Flying back with @davevelocity." He also uploaded two photos showing the plane's control panel, adding a caption that read, "Hey. Hey ... you ... look at me ... I'm the (co)pilot now."
At least two other STG employees also died when the private jet traveling from Teterboro, New Jersey, crashed into a residential area in San Diego—home to military families—around 4 a.m. on Thursday while residents were asleep, according to reports.
Authorities believe that there were no survivors among those on board the aircraft. Also, at least eight people on the ground sustained serious injuries.
Beyond his work in the music industry, Shapiro was also a passionate pilot and a licensed flight instructor with 15 years of flying experience, according to the website for his aviation school, Velocity Aviation.
The aircraft involved in the crash was a Cessna 550, which has a capacity of up to 10 passengers, though the FAA said that the exact number of people aboard has not yet been determined.
"From BASE jumping to aerobatic flying, Helicopters to twin engines, flight instructing to furthering his own education, doesn't matter to Dave as long as he gets to be in the sky," the company's website reads.
Not Clear Who was Piloting Aircraft
Airport authorities said that the doomed flight took off from Teterboro, New Jersey, on Wednesday night and made a refueling stop in Wichita along the way. Located about six miles from Manhattan, Teterboro is a frequently used departure point for private and corporate aircraft.
Cessna Citation II jets are currently listed on Trade-a-Plane.com with price tags ranging from $900,000 to $1.3 million.
Christopher Moore, who lives just one block away from where the crash occurred, said he and his wife were jolted awake by a loud explosion. They saw flames and smoke, prompting them to quickly grab their two small children and escape.
"It was definitely horrifying for sure, but sometimes you've just got to drop your head and get to safety," he said.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, but it happened amid thick morning fog near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. "You could barely see in front of you," said Eddy, the assistant fire chief.

PHOTO: IAM_JOECHEN/INSTAGRAM Actress Joe Chen goes for surgery soon after appendicitis diagnosis Taiwanese actress Joe Chen was thinking about her work even when she was unwell. The 46-year-old disclosed on Instagram Stories on May 28 that she had been suffering from diarrhoea and stomachache in the previous few days and was diagnosed with appendicitis after a health screening. Chen, who is married to Malaysian artist Alan Chen, decided to go for an operation on the same day she learnt about her condition, so that her upcoming work commitments will not be affected. 'The doctor told me not to worry, as it was only a minimally invasive surgery,' she wrote in Chinese on Instagram Stories. Joe Chen said she stayed in the hospital for only one night after the operation and was recovering well. The actress, who is known for starring in Taiwanese idol dramas such as The Prince Who Turns Into A Frog (2005) and Fated To Love You (2008), tagged Johor Bahru's Kempas Medical Centre in her post. 'Thank you to the doctors and nurses for their care, and thank you for preparing a fruit basket for me,' she wrote. 'I can be discharged from the hospital today, and the doctor said that I can eat whatever I want to eat.' The actress also shared a hilarious text conversation between her and her mother. Sharing a photo of her appendix after the surgery, Chen explained to her mother that the minimally invasive surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, was done with three small incisions in her abdomen. Her mother replied that the actress' appendix looked like chicken and duck intestines. Chen was in Singapore last week to attend American singer Lady Gaga's concert at the National Stadium. She shared on Instagram on May 20 videos and photos of herself at the event, including one of her pretending to be a monster, in reference to 'Little Monsters', as Lady Gaga's fans are affectionately called. Chen was also recently featured in the June issue of the Chinese edition of the Harper's Bazaar magazine. She previously disclosed on social media in January 2023 that she suffered from sleep apnoea and went for an operation to fix her condition. Her agency has so far not said if it will make any changes to her post-operation work schedule . Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Pilot, all 5 passengers killed in San Diego plane crash

SAN DIEGO: The six people onboard a small plane that crashlanded in a California neighborhood amid dense fog were all killed, according to investigating authorities. The Cessna 550 Citation, which federal records show belonged to music agent Dave Shapiro, struck a power line before plummeting into a residential area of San Diego at 3.47am (6.47pm, Singapore time) on Thursday (May 22), according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). "The pilot and passengers were fatally injured," NTSB investigator Dan Baker told a press conference on Friday. He added that no one on the ground had been seriously hurt. While Baker did not specify the number of fatalities, the US Federal Aviation Administration previously said the private plane had six people onboard. The San Diego County medical examiner's office named three of the victims as Shapiro, 42, Emma Huke, 25, and Celina Kenyon, 36. Music veteran Shapiro was a co-founder of Sound Talent Group, which has represented artists including Sum 41 and Vanessa Carlton. The company told US media that two other members of its staff, booking assistants Huke and Kendall Fortner, were also killed in the crash. "We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues and friends. Our hearts go out to their families and to everyone impacted," Sound Talent Group said in a statement. Kenyon was a professional photographer and mother, according to her social media. Her father, Bryan Charles Feldman, told NBC7 she had chosen to fly home early with friends after a photo shoot rather than take a commercial plane so she could take her daughter to school the next day. NBC7 identified the other victims as software engineer Dominic Damian and Daniel Williams, a former drummer for metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada. "No words. We owe you everything. Love you forever," the band wrote in a tribute to Williams on Instagram. In San Diego's Murphy Canyon neighborhood, at least 10 homes were hit by debris, while the site of the fiery crash was littered with charred remnants of cars and scattered fiberglass. It was not immediately clear what caused the Cessna to come plunging into the bloc, setting several houses alight. The NTSB said the pilot had not reported any problems to air traffic control or declared an emergency. Runway approach lights and an automated weather reporting system were not operational at the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport at the time, according to the NTSB's Baker. "We are trying to determine at this time if the airplane was equipped with a cockpit voice recorder," Baker said.
