WTC Final: What happens if Australia vs South Africa match ends in a draw?

Time of Indiaa day ago

The Word Test Championship Final is set to begin as Australia look to defend their title against South Africa at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground on Wednesday.
If the
WTC final
ends in a draw or a tie, the World Test Championship mace will be shared between Australia and South Africa. This was the regulation since its inception in 2021.
There is tiebreaker like a Super Over in Test cricket. Unlike bilateral Test series, where a draw simply concludes the contest with no winner, this being a championship final means both teams will be crowned joint winners if no result is possible.

WTC Final: Is there a reserve day?
Yes, the ICC has kept June 16 as a reserve day, which will be used only if net playing time lost during the scheduled five days is not recovered via extended sessions. The sixth day can add up to a maximum of 90 overs if required.
If the five scheduled days allow full innings and time for results, even with weather interruptions, and still end in a draw or tie, the reserve day won't be activated.

WTC
cycle.

A Tale of Two Legacies
Australia, led by Pat Cummins, are eying to be the first team to defend the WTC mace after their dominant win over India in the 2023 final. Their squad, brimming with experience, includes star names like Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Marnus Labuschagne.
In contrast, South Africa are chasing history. Temba Bavuma's men are looking to end a 27-year ICC trophy drought. Since winning the 1998 ICC KnockOut, South Africa have consistently faltered in knockout stages. This final offers them a shot at redemption and a fresh legacy.

WTC Final: Pat Cummins claims fifer against South Africa, surpasses Indian great on elite list

NEW DELHI: Australia skipper delivered a breathtaking bowling performance at Lord's, grabbing 6 for 28 to rip through South Africa's batting order and tilt the World Test Championship final heavily in his side's favour. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Cummins's masterclass saw him register his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests and reach a major personal milestone, surpassing Indian great Bishan Singh Bedi and matching with nine five-fors as a Test captain, the second-most in history behind Imran Khan (12). Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Most Test 5-fers as captain 12 - Imran Khan 9 - Richie Benaud 9 - Pat Cummins 8 - Bishan Singh Bedi 7 - Courtney Walsh 7 - Jason Holder The South African innings collapsed spectacularly on Day 2, skittled out for just 138 in reply to Australia's modest 212. Cummins, who had already taken two wickets in the morning session, returned after lunch to produce a blistering burst, four wickets for one run in just 17 balls, leaving South Africa reeling. Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham had briefly steadied the ship with a 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Bavuma, who started the day on 3 not out, showed some fight with a stylish six off Cummins and a lofted drive off Starc, but was dismissed soon after, caught at cover by a diving Marnus Labuschagne. Poll Should Pat Cummins be considered among the greatest Test captains of all time? Yes, absolutely! Not yet, needs more time No, there are better captains Cummins struck again quickly after lunch, removing Kyle Verreynne lbw and trapping Marco Jansen for a duck in the same over. He then ended Bedingham's 111-ball effort by inducing an edge to the keeper before the lower order completely disintegrated. 'Cricketers Aren't Cattle... With this performance, Cummins not only reaffirmed his status as one of the premier fast bowlers of his generation but also etched his name alongside the game's greats as a captain who leads by fiery example.

Was unhappy with my returns in last few matches, says Angelo Mathews as he ends red-ball career

Mumbai: As he walks into a cricketing sunset as Sri Lanka's third most successful batter in Test cricket, Sri Lanka's former captain Angelo Mathews says his decision to hang up his boots was hastened by low returns in his last seven to nine red-ball matches. With Sri Lanka set to play fewer red-ball matches in the next 18 months, the 38-year-old right-handed batter and right-arm medium pacer decided to quit red-ball cricket, vacating the spot for a youngster. "I wasn't happy with my returns in the last seven to nine games. By my standards, it wasn't up to the mark. I looked at the calendar – only two Tests scheduled over the next 18 months. One at 38, another at 39. Felt like a long wait, and I thought it's best a younger player gets a crack," Mathews told Telecom Asia Sport ( in an exclusive interview on Thursday. Mathews signs off with 8,167 Test runs to his name, which makes him Sri Lanka's third-highest run-scorer, behind the legendary Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814). Mathews admitted he was proud, yet slightly wistful. 'I never dreamt I'd finish as the third-highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka, especially behind two legends of the game. Yes, there's a tinge of disappointment not breaching that 10,000-run mark. Injuries and setbacks played their part, but I'm ever grateful to God for letting me play 118 Tests.' EYES ON T20 WORLD CUP Mathews is still hoping to play other formats of the game and especially wants to end his career with a last hurrah in coloured clothing. With the T20 World Cup coming up – that Sri Lanka is co-hosting with India -- in eight months, the 38-year-old allrounder hasn't ruled out one final attempt to claim an ICC title. "I've always said that Test cricket is the ultimate examination. Like Virat Kohli mentioned, it's where you truly earn respect. It tests every aspect – your skill, your character, your patience. That's the real deal," said Mathews. Mathews also fondly recalled two crowning moments of his career – leading Sri Lanka to their first-ever Test series win in England in 2014, and the historic 3-0 whitewash of Australia in 2016 to lift the Warne-Murali Trophy. 'That England series was something else – scoring back-to-back hundreds and winning from behind was deeply satisfying. Then to beat Australia 3-0 was special. I'll always be grateful to the players and support staff who made those memories possible,' he was quoted as saying in the interview. Beyond his milestones, Mathews takes quiet pride in having nurtured the next generation. More than half of the current national side debuted under his captaincy. 'There's no greater satisfaction than seeing those youngsters blossom into match-winners. Identifying talent is one thing, but backing them through lean patches is what really matters. Watching them now – they're vital cogs in the wheel. It gives me hope that Sri Lankan cricket is in good hands.' What will add more glitter to his career will be ending his international career with an ICC title or two.
