Last chance to nominate Cumbria's 'Best Chippy 2025'
PEOPLE are urged to nominate their favourite place for a chippy tea in the News & Star's 'Best Chippy 2025' awards.
Online nominations will close on Sunday, May 25 with the ten finalists being revealed on Tuesday, May 27. Cumbrians are being asked to get behind their favourite.
It could be newcomers to the scene or shops that have been serving up tasty golden fish and fluffy chips for decades.
Following this, readers will then be able to vote for the county's 'Best Chippy 2025' by picking up editions of the News & Star between Monday, June 2, and Saturday, June 14 with the winner set to be announced on Monday, June 23.
Speaking after its launch, Joy Yates, regional editor for Newsquest Cumbria asked readers to support their favourite.

She said: 'We are delighted to be once again looking for our Best Chippy. In 2024, this was one of our most hotly contested promotions and I'm excited to see who claims the honour this year.

Major trade idea gives the Lakers a defensive monster at center To make a baseball analogy, some people want the Los Angeles Lakers to swing for the fences and look to hit a home run rather than simply get a base hit single when it comes to pursuing a legitimate starting center this offseason. Names such as Nic Claxton, Daniel Gafford and even Jarrett Allen, who was named to the NBA All-Star Game three years ago, have been tossed around as possible targets. But one writer for ClutchPoints proposed a trade idea that would land the Lakers someone who has not only been an All-Star three times and the Defensive Player of the year four times, but also recently torched them in the playoffs. That's right — this trade idea would give the Purple and Gold none other than the French Rejection — otherwise known as Rudy Gobert. In this mock trade, they would give up guards Austin Reaves and Gabe Vincent and big man Maxi Kleber to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and they would also receive Josh Minott, a little-used 22-year-old small forward. Via ClutchPoints: "Doing business with the team that just bested them in the playoffs wouldn't be easy for the Lakers, but there might not be a better center option available, and LA needs to maximize LeBron James' time in the league alongside Doncic before he retires," wrote Bailey Bassett. "Gobert has notably declined, evidenced by a 1.4 block per game average this past season. That mark was tied for Gobert's worst since his rookie year. He is also incredibly limited on offense when it comes to his post-up game, ball-handling skills, and jump shot. "Even so, Gobert is still an elite defensive player. The four-time Defensive Player of the Year is still one of the best rim protectors in the NBA. Ultimately, the Lakers just need a big body who can take up space down low and collect rebounds." This would be a high-risk, high-reward trade for the Lakers — not too much unlike the 2022 trade that brought Minnesota Gobert for four serviceable role players and four future first-round draft picks. In addition to his vast offensive limitations, Gobert seems to have some difficulties playing effective defense on the perimeter, as Luka Doncic proved in this year's playoffs, as well as last year's Western Conference finals. But his career average of 11.7 rebounds a game would greatly help a Lakers team that lacks power on the boards. He would also be an excellent target for lob passes from Doncic. Ultimately, this may be a trade idea the Lakers would want to turn down, depending on the other options they may or may not have elsewhere. Reaves shouldn't be untouchable, but he shouldn't be traded for someone such as Gobert who has serious limitations in his game on both ends of the court.

It could get interesting if Carr decides to take his other trips but the Gators landed a powerful interior offensive lineman who will help in Gainesville. There was some chatter that if things went well in Seattle, he would commit and that's exactly what happened. Day could be one of the next big defensive backs in a long line that have played for the Huskies. At 6-foot-6 and 290 pounds, Duell can push people around and he also has great athleticism to get to the second level. Faamatuaniu stepped up his game in a big way at the recent Rivals Camp Series in Los Angeles and he has position versatility so he can be used all over in Berkeley. Clark, Harris committed to Washington during his weekend trip. The Huskies were always in the forefront of his recruitment but it was expected he might take more visits before deciding. Harris is massive at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, but it wouldn't be a shock if he played inside. His brother, Lawson, plays at Georgia. His father and two uncles played for Georgia. It always felt inevitable that the four-star defensive end from Norcross, Ga., would end up playing for the Bulldogs and his commitment happened over the weekend on yet another trip to Athens. Luckie was just on campus for the recent Scavenger Hunt and his relationship with position coach Tray Scott was big as well. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH GEORGIA FANS AT Despite being from Norman (Okla.) North, Oklahoma never offered McMorris as the long-time Minnesota lean picked the Golden Gophers over Oregon State, Tulsa, Kansas State and Iowa State over the weekend. There are some traits here that we love as McMorris is 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds so he's not completely filled out yet, plus he has really long arms. All that should bode well in the coming years. His father played at Maryland and his brother went to Duke but neither program ended up offering the high three-star offensive lineman from Leland (N.C.) North Brunswick. That is to Rutgers' gain as his relationship with the coaching staff there played a huge role in his commitment as the Scarlet Knights loaded up over the weekend with six pledges. A couple weeks ago at the Long Beach Millikan Tournament of Champions, Tavizon was not hiding his favorites: Oregon was the front-runner and the Ducks would be tough to beat and then there was also serious interest in USC. But the 2027 four-star from San Diego (Calif.) Lincoln was always leaning toward the Ducks and on his weekend visit, he committed. Mets Have Next Tim Lincecum, 'Strikeout Machine' in Line for Rotation

The New York Mets have taken back the top spot in the National League East division and are coming off of an impressive extra-innings win against the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Though the Mets' best player, Juan Soto, is seeing a slow start to the season, the team has enjoyed strong contributions from a broad range of others. Pete Alonso has returned to the team in career form, Francisco Lindor has continued to play like one of the best shortstops in the sport and the pitching staff is replete with pleasant surprises. Even with a big-league roster that appears as complete as any in the majors, the Mets also have a budding superstar waiting in the wings. SNY's Danny Abriano detailed how "fast-rising" prospect Jonah Tong is drawing some exciting comparisons from Double-A Binghamton. "As Tong continues a meteoric rise that saw him excel across three minor league levels in 2024 during what was his first full professional season, he has taken it up a notch this season with Binghamton, where he has a 2.25 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, with an eye-popping 72 strikeouts and only 23 hits allowed over 44.0 innings spanning seven starts," Abriano wrote. "But as far as one pitcher Tong most enjoyed watching and says he's compared to the most, it's Tim Lincecum, who was a strikeout machine during his heyday while winning two Cy Young awards for the Giants." (Photo by) More Shaw/Getty From 2008 to 2011, Lincecum was one of the most electric pitchers in all of baseball, earning four All-Star nods in that span despite his diminutive stature and unorthodox delivery. His career took a sharp downward turn after its peak, but if the Mets can expect a Lincecum-like arrival for Tong, they will surely take it. Tong does have some more to prove in the minors before he'd be ready to test that comparison at the big-league level, but it's possible the Mets could promote him as soon as next season if he can keep up this level of production. Given the level of success the team is having, particularly in the pitching staff, the idea of adding the next Lincecum to the rotation is an exciting one.
