PSG president explains strict transfer rule Luis Enrique says they must follow
Luis Enrique has changed the way that Paris Saint-Germain approach transfers, with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi explaining how they now conduct business under the Spanish manager
Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has explained the rule Luis Enrique has enforced since joining the club that helped them win the Champions League. PSG claimed their maiden title in the competition by destroying Inter Milan 5-0 on May 31 – and a great deal of the credit went to manager Enrique.
The French giants had faltered in Europe's premier club competition in previous years, but triumphed with a team packed full of young guns. Their new look under Enrique was highlighted by Desire Doue – the 20-year-old attacker who scored twice in the final.
He was signed from Rennes for €50million (£42m) in August 2024 to form a part of the young spine of Enrique's side. PSG also signed Joao Neves (19), William Pacho (22) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (24) during the 2024/25 season, all of whom started the thrashing of Inter.
Al-Khelaifi says that focus on youth will continue while Enrique remains the manager. "He is the best coach to develop young players,' he told Qatari broadcaster Al-Kass. 'He likes young players. For example, buying a 28 or 27-year-old player is impossible for him, forbidden, he absolutely does not want it.
'He likes all players who are 21 or 22 years old. Have you noticed the latest players we have recruited? The oldest is 23 or 24, no more.
"Luis Enrique likes a fighting spirit, he likes a player who gives his all, who runs a lot on the pitch, who is generous in his effort. How do we work? [Sporting director] Luis Campos has to present the player to the coach. The coach has to study how he plays, his value, his price and other aspects.
'There has to be an agreement, an agreement between everyone, even if each has their role. For everything that concerns scouting, it is Luis Enrique who has to approve the player. He has to be convinced that the player fits into his future project. Then, we, the management, also give our approval.'
HAVE YOUR SAY! Can PSG sustain their form next season? Comment below.
Al-Khelaifi also used the interview to fire shots at former PSG striker Kylian Mbappe, who left for Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer, only to end his debut season trophyless. PSG won the treble without him, with Enrique claiming the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France and the Champions League to give his president ammunition.
"It's easier to score goals in La Liga than in Ligue 1," Al-Khelaifi said. "Luis Enrique proudly represented Ligue 1 and defended it against Premier League fans who called it the Farmers' League.
"We ended up beating Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal in the Champions League this season. Nobody thought we would win the title. We approached the Champions League step by step.'

‘Fighter' Nico Raskin hailed again as Rangers hero brings curtain down on campaign with crucial cameo in big Belgium win
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS hero Nico Raskin was hailed by boss Rudi Garcia after his introduction helped power Belgium to a thrilling 4-3 win over Wales. The French-born gaffer held the Ibrox hero in reserve for the clash against Craig Bellamy's side and it looked like an easy end to the season for him as the Belgians coasted into a 3-0 lead in Brussels. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 2 Nico Raskin celebrates with Alexis Saelemaekers and Youri Tielemans Credit: Getty 2 Raskin in action Credit: Getty Romelu Lukaku, Youri Tielemans and Jeremy Doku all netted as the hosts ran riot in the opening half and hour. But Harry Wilson's penalty in added time in first half changed the complexion of the game. And then a spirited Wales side came roaring back through Sorba Thomas and Brennan Johnson to level with 20 minutes left. It was then that Raskin entered the fray for Dodi Lukebakio, making an instant impact with a cynical yellow card for hauling back Thomas. He thought he had a hand in the winner but Lukaku's 'goal' was ruled out for a lengthy VAR check. But a stellar campaign ended in another win when Kevin de Bruyne popped up in the 89th minute as Belgium recorded the win which is massive in the context of their World Cup qualifying group. Raskin's long term Ibrox future, of course, is a source of uncertainty - with the Gers desperate to either get him to prolong his stay or cash in on a player before he enters the final year of his deal. But performances like these on the international stage won't do anyone any harm. Garcia said afterwards: "Nicolas Raskin's entry was important because we needed fighters on the pitch. "To give away a lead like that, I don't know if it's something mentally, but I'll talk with the players. Rangers boss Barry Ferguson reveals why he's 'had a few arguments' with Ibrox ace Nicolas Raskin "They have showed that they know what to do in the first half. Now, they just need to keep that up for 90 minutes." And Belgian fans were loving his contribution, particularly when it comes to interceptions. One wrote: "Nicolas Raskin in 4 matches with the Red Devils is: "223 minutes on the pitch 1 goal conceded "163 minutes on the bench 6 goals conceded." Next up for Raskin and Belgium is the Liechtenstein team which Scotland made light work of last night. Another man on the Rangers payroll, Welsh winger Rabbi Matondo, entered the fray in the dying minutes. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Abramovich sends emotional plea to Chelsea after breaking silence on club sale
Roman Abramovich has broken his silence on the pain of being forced to sell Chelsea as a consequence of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Three years after the Russian billionaire was forced to cut ties with the Premier League club, the British government are still threatening to go to to court to ensure the proceeds reached victims of the conflict in Ukraine. Abramovich was sanctioned in the wake of Russia's invasion in 2022 and sold two-time Champions League winner Chelsea to a consortium fronted by Americans Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for £2.5 billion in May of that year. In a new book, 'Sanctioned: The Inside Story of the Sale of Chelsea FC' the 58-year-old, who funded and presided over two decades of unprecedented success at Stamford Bridge, addresses the pain of effectively being ousted from his position. When asked on Chelsea and the future, Abramovich said: 'Perhaps one day there would be a situation where I could attend a match and say a proper goodbye, but nothing more than that. 'I don't have any interest in any role in a football club, certainly not a professional role. 'There might be something where I could help with academies and youngsters, giving greater opportunities to people from difficult backgrounds, if there were an initiative that could make a difference. 'But as for ownership or a professional role at a club, I am done with that in this lifetime.' Abramovich said before the sale that net proceeds would go to a charitable foundation 'for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.' But the money remained frozen in a bank and the British government said it was still to make its way to those in need. A joint statement by Treasury chief Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy earliest this month confirmed the government was ready to mount legal action. 'The government is determined to see the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine, following Russia's illegal full-scale invasion. We are deeply frustrated that it has not been possible to reach agreement on this with Mr Abramovich so far,' they said. 'While the door for negotiations will remain open, we are fully prepared to pursue this through the courts if required, to ensure people suffering in Ukraine can benefit from these proceeds as soon as possible.' Abramovich was sanctioned when the British government targeted what then-Foreign Secretary Liz Truss described as 'oligarchs and kleptocrats' with close links to Russian President Vladimir Putin and 'complicit in his aggression.' More Trending The funds from the sale, however, still belong to Abramovich even though they are frozen. They cannot be used or moved without the issue of a licence from the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation. In the soon to be released book, Abramovich also said he would not allow himself to be distracted by the accusations towards him 'There is an old Russian saying, 'The dogs bark but the caravan keeps moving,' and that fits here,' he also told the book's author, Nick Purewal. 'Whatever I do, people will always accuse me of some kind of agenda. In the end, I have done what I have done simply to try to help.' Arsenal suffer fresh Benjamin Sesko blow with rival bid for striker made
Arsenal have been handed another major obstacle in their efforts to sign Benjamin Sesko with Saudi Arabian clubs joining the race for his signature. The Gunners are eager to sign a centre forward this summer and while talks took place to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, Sesko has emerged as their top target. Manchester United have been credited with interest in the 22-year-old but it appeared Arsenal would have a relatively clear run to sign the Slovenia international this summer. While they have been in talks with RB Leipzig for a number of weeks, there is thought to have been no major breakthrough with the German side standing firm on their £70million valuation. Fabrizio Romano now reports clubs from the Saudi Pro League have joined the race to sign Sesko ahead of Mikel Arteta's side. While the striker is still thought to favour a move that keeps him in Europe, Saudi clubs would have no problem meeting Leipzig's huge valuation. A-Hilal are named as one of the clubs interested in his services. The club, who last week appointed Simone Inzaghi their new manager, were ready to spend £100million to sign Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United only for the midfielder to reject their advances to stay in Manchester. Al-Hilal were also prepared to spend big on Victor Osimhen but the Nigeria international has turned down a staggering offer worth €30million-a-season. Arsenal spent a large portion of last season without a centre forward at their disposal with Mikel Merino shifted up front while Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz were sidelined. More Trending Gyokeres, who scored 52 goals in 54 appearances last season, emerged as a target at the end of the 2024-25 season. But Arsenal's waning interest, coupled with Chelsea signing Liam Delap from Ipswich, has opened the door back up for United to land the Sweden international. United's failure to secure Champions League football next season appeared to have derailed their chances of competing for his signature. But latest reports suggest United are now firmly back in the race as their seek to bring in a striker to lead their new-look attack of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
