New Delhi:
Meta has appointed Arun Srinivas as the Managing Director and Head for its India operations.
This comes after Sandhya Devanathan taking on an expanded role of leading both India and Southeast Asia.
"We are appointing Arun Srinivas as the Managing Director and Head for Meta in India. This follows the recent announcement of Sandhya Devanathan taking on an expanded role of leading both India and South East Asia," the tech giant said in a statement.
As part of his new and expanded role, Srinivas will focus on bringing the organisation's business, innovation, and revenue priorities together to serve partners and clients, while continuing to support the long-term growth of Meta's business and commitment to India.
The tech giant said he will spearhead the India charter and strengthen the strategic relationships with the country's leading brands, advertisers, developers and partners to drive growth for India as a market.
He will transition to his new role from July 1, 2025, and will continue to report to Devanathan, said the company.
"As India continues to be at the forefront of economic growth and innovation, we are excited to have Arun at the helm of our efforts in this critical market," said Devanathan, Vice President (India and South East Asia), Meta.
Meta in India is leading the way in AI adoption, WhatsApp, and Reels, and Arun's impressive track record of building high-performing teams, driving product innovation, and fostering strong partnerships makes him the ideal leader to drive Meta's continued investment in the country.
"He will continue to work closely with me as we scale the business in India," Devanathan added.
A post-graduate from IIM Kolkata, Srinivas comes with nearly three decades of experience in sales and marketing leadership roles at companies such as Hindustan Unilever, Reebok, OLA, and investment firm WestBridge Capital.
He currently serves as the Director and Head of Ads Business in India. Since joining the company in 2020, he has played a pivotal role in leading Meta's work with the country's largest advertisers and agency partners focusing on strategic revenue priorities such as AI, Reels, and Messaging.

Hyderabad man duped of over ₹1 lakh in job scam

A 36-year-old man from Hyderabad was duped to the tune of ₹1.11 lakh by a fraudster who posed as a senior official at a fictitious company. The Hyderabad Cybercrime Police booked a case. According to the police, the victim had shared his resume with friends in search of employment opportunities. One of them forwarded a phone number he had received from a third party, suggesting that the contact might have job openings. Trusting the lead, the victim contacted the number and was introduced to a man who identified himself as the Admin Director of a firm named 'Intel Lie Company'. The caller claimed that the company had job vacancies with salary packages between ₹25 lakh to ₹30 lakh per annum. He told the victim that his current financial profile did not meet the offer criteria and advised him to revise his previous year's Income Tax Return (ITR). He offered to facilitate the amendment through his chartered accountant and asked the victim to transfer ₹38,000 to a given bank account. Over the next few days, the fraudster continued to demand additional payments under various pretexts. The victim transferred ₹36,000 to a second account and ₹37,000 more for what was described as a mandatory 'Gold SIP' to secure the position. After receiving the total amount of ₹1,11,000, the alleged recruiter stopped responding, and his phone has remained switched off since May 28, 2025. Authorities warn that scammers often pose as HR officials or company executives and exploit referrals from friends or messages on WhatsApp to gain trust. Police are urging the public to always verify job offers through official websites and company HR departments.

WhatsApp announces its first advertising play, but won't show it to everyone

It is finally happening. WhatsApp is finally opening up for advertising, though limited to the Status tab. The move is significant because the messaging platform with over 1.5 billion daily users has since the time of its launch, and even after its acquisition by Facebook, maintained that advertising is something it was not very keen on. In a set of new features announced today, WhatsApp has started rolling out ads in Status, allowing users to find new businesses while browsing through the tab. Alice Newton-Rex, VP product at WhatsApp, said they are also starting channel subscriptions to 'allow users to support their favourite channel by subscribing to receive exclusive updates for a monthly fee' and promoted channels with boosted visibility in the directory. WhatsApp has over the years had a strong stance against advertising, with founder CEO Jan Koum highlighting how the company did not want to become 'just another ad clearinghouse'. In fact, he was famously quoted as saying that 'when advertising is involved, you, the user, are the product'. In 2014, when Facebook picked up WhatsApp for $19 billion, both Mark Zuckerberg and Koum stuck to their no-ads vision for the messaging platform, with the Facebook CEO even saying he did not think 'ads are the right way to monetise messaging'. The new feature actually stays true to this commitment as users who don't use Status update will not see any ads. In fact, in 2017, Koum's co-founder Brian Acton had told The Indian Express (WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton: 'Social is not in our vocabulary') that the platform had started 'creating the foundations of how businesses will engage with consumers', calling it 'clean, straightforward, simple and spam-free communication'. This need for private, personal conversations is and will always be the heart of WhatsApp, Newton-Rex said in a select media briefing. 'Privacy is at the core of everything we do, and it's what continues to drive us as we innovate and look to the future. But we know that if we get the core of private messaging right, then this gives us the opportunity to build more that users want.' She said this was one of the reasons why WhatsApp introduced the Updates tab, 'as a place for optional experiences,' different from chats inbox. She said they are already seeing 'a lot of admins and businesses use channels and status in creative ways' and this is why WhatsApp wanted to 'give them more tools to help them grow'. Newton-Rex said WhatsApp 'has been talking about plans to build a business that does not interrupt your personal chats for years, and we believe that the Updates tab is the right place for these new features to work'. With ads in status, she said, people will be able to find a new business and easily start a Whatsapp chat with them about a product or service. 'And for the businesses who rely on WhatsApp, this will help them attract new customers.' In response to a query, Newton-Rex told that users 'will be able to take out the ads in the ads manager, just like you do for Facebook or Instagram ads. Now WhatsApp will also be an option'. The ads will come in the middle of status updates, and users who have a lot of these to catch up will potentially see more ads compared to a user who has fewer status updates from contacts. The ads will also be guided by the same principles as other Meta campaigns and will be reviewed before being made live. Clarifying that this was a feature businesses have been asking for, the WhatsApp product head said: 'There are hundreds of millions of businesses on WhatsApp talking to their customers, and we think that the reason that business has already been so successful is that people just find this a better way to interact with them. So it felt like the next logical step to help them also discover businesses directly within WhatsApp.' Asked if these WhatsApp ads would be targeted differently, given that the platform was more community driven and not open like rest of the web, Newton-Rex underlined that WhatsApp has a 'limited set of information' and the kinds of signals that will be used are country or city, what channels you follow, what languages you use, and what ads you have interacted with. This, she said, could lead to a lot of local ads too. With promoted channels, admins will get the ability to promote certain channels in the channels directory to help attract new followers and increase distribution for their content. Channel subscriptions, meanwhile, will give them a new way to share exclusive in the moment updates with their most engaged followers, while earning money right on WhatsApp. Meanwhile, subscription channels will be available only to select channel partners in the beginning and broadened to more later with the ability to charge a fixed fee through the app stores. Initially, WhatsApp will not charge a fee for this feature. Nandagopal Rajan writes on technology, gadgets and everything related. He has worked with the India Today Group and Hindustan Times. Online payment: UPI transactions get faster; time reduced from 30 seconds to 10

Prefer paying online but annoyed by the time digital transactions take? There's good news for you. Starting Monday, UPI payments have become significantly faster, with transactions, balance checks, and reversals now processing in just 10 to 15 seconds, down from the earlier wait time of up to 30 seconds. The time to validate a payee's address in a UPI transaction will now be trimmed down to just 10 seconds from the previous 15. This sharp cut in response times across key UPI services follows a directive from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Effective since June 16, this move is part of NPCI's latest push to improve user experience on the country's most widely used digital payments platform. In another change, users will now be allowed to check their bank balance via UPI apps up to 50 times a day. Until now, there was no set limit on the number of balance inquiries. The new cap is designed to improve system efficiency and reduce unnecessary load on the network, an expert said, quoted by PTI. U PI, short for Unified Payments Interface, has seen explosive growth. In May alone, the platform processed 1,868 crore transactions, a 33% jump from a year ago. The total value exchanged stood at Rs 25.14 lakh crore, up 23%. To boost customer confidence and reduce risks, NPCI has directed UPI apps to display only the actual beneficiary's name during transactions. Additionally, apps must disable any feature that lets users edit the 'beneficiary name' within the interface. All stakeholders in the UPI ecosystem are required to comply with these norms by June 30.
