Catani Gardens primed for King's Birthday success at Mornington
Lightly-raced import Catani Gardens is well-positioned to build on his Australian profile at Mornington on King's Birthday Monday. The Anthony and Sam Freedman -trained five-year-old, $5.50 favourite in the 2000m Benchmark 74 Handicap, led all the way to win at Ballarat last start. The Irish-bred Catani Gardens, owned by Lloyd Williams and James Packer, won a Mornington maiden by three lengths last year in his first Australian start. The Camelot gelding then failed at The Valley when fading out of contention before being spelled. Sam Freedman said Catani Gardens 'should be really competitive' on Monday with apprentice jockey Tom Prebble again in the saddle. 'He was good last time (Ballarat) and 2000m seems like his wheelhouse at the moment,' Freedman said. 'He's been working well and it looks like a suitable race. 'He's a strong worker and seems to like to get on the speed … he should be really competitive.' Freedman is happy for Catani Gardens to dictate future race plans based on performance and merit. 'We're just taking him through his grades and seeing where he gets to,' Freedman said. 'We'll raise the bar and hopefully he continues to step up.' Freedman has six runners at Mornington including Everain and Winter Hail in a 1200m maiden. Blue Hawaiian, trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, is a $2.70 favourite for the race from Freedman pair Everain ($3.10) and Winter Hail ($4.20).

Milestone Papalii double lifts Raiders over Souths
Josh Papalii scored a fairytale double as he became the most-capped player in Canberra history and lifted the Raiders to a gritty come-from-behind win over South Sydney. Chants of "Papa" rang through GIO Stadium after the Raiders legend's two late tries, before Papalii converted his second himself to put the icing on a 36-12 victory and send the Raiders to the top of the NRL ladder on Sunday. Despite the veteran's late show, it was young five-eighth Ethan Strange who was responsible for turning the day around for the home side, after two early Rabbitohs tries for Keaon Koloamatangi and Alex Johnston threatened to rain on Big Papa's parade. Strange was unstoppable in wet and near-freezing conditions that made handling a tricky task. Just before halftime, the 20-year-old showed why he is one of the best running halves in the league by pushing past four Souths defenders to muscle his way to the tryline and lift the Raiders back into the game. Strange replicated his effort after the break, jinking past more flat-footed defenders to put the Raiders back level. Soon after, Johnston failed to defuse a Jamal Fogarty bomb and back-rower Zac Hosking cleaned up the scraps to send Canberra ahead. The Raiders grew in confidence and doubled their lead through Simi Sasagi before Papalii, who was given a rare start by coach Ricky Stuart in his 319th game, came on for his second stint. In the 70th minute, the strong crowd of 19,438 that braved the miserable conditions were sent into raptures when hooker Owen Pattie sent Papalii over with a short range pass. Three minutes later the veteran went over after another Pattie pass and stepped up to land the conversion. The Raiders went top with the result, though Canterbury could usurp them when they face Parramatta on Monday. Other than a brief moment in round 2 of 2024, it's the first time Canberra have topped the ladder since round 6 in 2005.

South Sydney Rabbitohs throwback jersey becomes instant meme
The South Sydney Rabbitohs may have missed the mark with their jersey on Sunday. A day after the Brisbane Broncos rocked arguably the greatest jersey ever seen in NRL history, the Bunnies went old school against the Canberra Raiders. The club elected to rock a 90s heritage kit in the nation's capital, the last time they wore it was back in 1997. While paying homage to the past, the look did not win over those watching on with fans quickly turning the jersey into a meme. Social media quickly had a field day with the look with countless fans pointing out the design looked like something from a Castrol oil bottle. One fan on X wrote: 'Rabbits sponsored by Castrol?' A second added: 'The Bunnies look like 4 Litres of Castrol Engine Oil.' A third wrote: 'The castrol rabbitohs. Of course it wasn't just Castrol that fans believed the new jerseys looked like with many believing it was more akin to 7-Eleven. One wrote: 'Souths jumper looks like 7Eleven logo.' A second posted: 'Why does the Rabbitohs jersey look like they're sponsored by 7-Eleven.' Despite the jokes coming in, the Rabbitohs started the contest on fire as they scored the opening two tries to take an early 12-0 lead. The Raiders hit back right before the halftime break to bring the margin back to 12-6 before they ripped away the momentum of the contest. They emerged as a side many believe can go all the way in 2025 as they scored 30-unanswered points to take the victory and move to the top of the NRL ladder. Fan favourite Josh Papali'i ran out for his 319th appearance to go past Jason Croker as the club's most capped player. In fairytale fashion Papali'i sealed the win with two tries in the last ten minutes, the 66th and 67th four pointers of his storied career – a record for a front rower. He even converted the second. It was a Sunday afternoon where the temperature hovered around five degrees at kick-off and the windchill and rain pushed things below freezing, but almost everyone left GIO Stadium with a warm heart. The win however may have come at a cost for the Raiders – and NSW – after player of the match Hudson Young was put on report for a high shot on Jayden Sullivan in the first half. Young and Blues coach Laurie Daley will now face a nervous wait at the hands of the match review committee before Daley names his squad for Origin II in Perth on June 18. Young has already been fined twice in the last 12 months for careless high tackles. While it was Papali'i's day, Young and Corey Horsburgh were sensational for Canberra, while prodigious five eighth Ethan Strange contributed 18 points. The win lifts the Raiders to the top of the ladder on for and against, for a day at least, with the Bulldogs a chance to return to the number one slot when they face Parramatta on Monday afternoon.
