
New approach to GDP could help nature survive Labour's housebuilding plans
Boris Johnson was prime minister and Kemi Badenoch was a Treasury minister when they gave their support to a groundbreaking study of the economy and its most consistently tortured victim: nature.
It was February 2021 and the eminent Cambridge professor Sir Partha Dasgupta had just delivered a 360-page report to the Treasury on the economics of biodiversity, which brought rigour to a subject often governed by emotion.
Johnson and Badenoch seemed to support the analysis, which argued that without financial cost/benefit analysis that included biodiversity in its sums, a growing economy would destroy natural habitats. Dasgupta's hard-headed number crunching showed that when nature is in decline, there is a financial as well as an environmental deficit.
Fast forward to 2025, and Labour has promised to build 1.5m new homes by the end of the parliament and is already behind schedule. An expanding population and a reliance on private housebuilders, which drip feed homes into the market to maintain high prices, has left the UK with a significant shortage.
Last year there was an estimated shortfall of 2.5m homes, despite there being 1.4m plots already with planning permission. And while some local authorities have insisted that developers include parks and tree planting in their schemes, along with a high percentage of affordable homes, they complain that appeals by developers to the secretary of state for relief from these responsibilities are often successful.
But as the Labour government moves ahead with a planning and infrastructure bill designed to promote growth, there are understandable fears the landmark report has been sidelined. Nature loss in the UK has been significant over many decades, but Labour's message in the bill is that the developer knows best, and other considerations can take a back seat.
It's why the National Trust has warned the bill is a 'licence to kill nature' and the Office for Environmental Protection has advised the government that it is a 'regression' in environmental law. Housing projects that protect natural habitats, include public transport and divert wastewater from running into local watercourses are deemed too expensive. Current planning rules already allow developers, in almost all cases, to 'value engineer' these elements out of the design.
Traditional economic thinking is partly to blame. It excludes the world's natural resources except when they are dug up or chopped down and become raw materials for various manufacturing industries.
Dasgupta sought to change this, providing a way for economists to put a value on nature and calculate whether the type of growth in the economy enhanced or destroyed a broader definition of national wealth.
Since 2021, he has been liaising with the Office for National Statistics to produce an alternative to gross domestic product (GDP). Currently, when governments consider how much economic progress they have made in the previous year they use GDP, which adds up the income from buying and selling goods in the public and private sectors to give a measure of national output. This single figure is Rachel Reeves's guiding light.
But the problem with it from an environmental perspective is that GDP includes lots of bad stuff, as well as what we might describe as progress. It calculates oil extraction in the North Sea without considering the implications for emissions and global heating, and classes peat extraction and the paving over of previously wooded land as adding to GDP without any negative cost.
Dasgupta's report found that between 1990 and 2014, the UK's 'produced capital' (including manufactured goods and built infrastructure) rose by a fifth but, in the same period, its stock of 'natural capital' declined by 30%.

Analysis by the Green Finance Institute charity suggests that the depletion of nature at the present rate will have the effect of cutting UK GDP by 6% by the 2030s, and, it has argued, if we want to get on and implement the Dasgupta review, replacing GDP must be top of the agenda.
Parliament's environmental audit committee added its voice to complaints last month, saying it was concerned that a mission to protect 30% of the land by 2030 would be missed unless a mix of sticks and carrots persuaded private sector landlords to improve biodiversity net gain.
There are many MPs and ministers who recognise the need to protect nature and biodiversity as the UK grows both in population and economically. The question hangs over the chancellor as to whether she is on board.
Reeves recently waded into the controversy over a bat tunnel straddling the HS2 train link from London to Birmingham to say that never again should the protection of bats hold up important infrastructure projects. Keir Starmer vowed to take on 'the nimbys' by reducing legal challenges to infrastructure building – with a new approach stopping 'newts and bats' from blocking construction.
That could spell more trouble for the natural environment, not less.

Historic Arnos Vale Cemetery damaged by vandals
Members of the public are being asked to "remain vigilant" and report suspicious activity after a historic graveyard was destroyed by vandals. Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust in Bristol said a total of seven graves were damaged, with Victorian marble headstones toppled over and stonework smashed. The boiler room and crypt of the Anglican Chapel, a Grade II*-listed building, were also broken into and sustained significant damage in the trust said it may have to consider adding more security measures to the site including overnight staff and additional CCTV. The graves in Arnos Vale Cemetery date back to 1839, with the first burial recorded in July of that cemetery was designed to provide a more spacious and sanitary burial ground, compared to the overcrowded parish graveyards of the a statement, the trust said: "This vandalism has understandably caused concern to everyone that cherishes Arnos Vale Cemetery as a place of remembrance, reflection, and heritage."Acts of vandalism place additional pressure on limited resources, and divert funds away from day-to-day maintenance and conservation work across the cemetery and its listed buildings."As a registered charity, the team relies on public support and donations to care for the historic site. The cemetery remains open 24 hours a day, serving as a vital pedestrian route and green space for local people. The charity said it remains "committed to maintaining this open access", but repeated incidents may lead to the trustees "reviewing these arrangements".CEO Ann Fiddler said: "We are grateful for the continued support and ask everyone to remain vigilant and report any signs of new damage to the graves or the site."Together we can ensure the protection and conservation of this unique place for generations to come."Your eyes and support can make a real difference in protecting this special place."

'Kudos to Martin for backing himself to win over support'
After four months of searching, and numerous candidates in the mix from Steven Gerrard to Davide Ancelotti, we finally have our head coach to kickstart the new era for the responsibility has been given to Russell Martin, that's right - don't squint your eyes or think this is a typo - it's actually him. Frankly, as always, I hope it works and he is successful but it appears he's the one that almost no one the online reaction, you have to give him some kudos for taking the job and backing himself to win over the trust of the thing that irked me with regard to Philippe Clement's style of football was the lack of control - it was all very will be the polar opposite. What I hope for is that he can come in and keep the positive parts of his play - the high press and high tempo - and tighten up the I always feel the sign of a good manager is someone who can improve players already at a club when you arrive. If he can get a right few of them to take their games to the next level such as Mo Diomande, Nico Raskin and Hamza Igamane, I'd be delighted with that as a starting from Martin at his first media conference today will be interesting, particularly his thoughts on the fan noise and more importantly, how he wants to move this team forward and try and win games of sporting director Kevin Thelwell and new technical director Dan Purdy must give him the tools to succeed by adding to the players mentioned above, if they remain at the club beyond the summer. It's a tough job ahead, and the recruitment has to be spot on all across the squad to get players that fit the Martin's currently have a mishmash of players who lack direction. Hopefully with a new manager and new players coming in things will become more cohesive on the pitch.I'm intrigued where this will go, what calibre of player we can attract and how Martin's philosophy will work both domestically and in be honest, going into next season, fan opinion, possession stats and philosophies won't really matter. It's silverware that counts and if you wanted Martin or were a bit dubious, like myself, you just hope he comes in and delivers.

Exact code to spot when £100 Nationwide payment lands in millions of accounts within weeks – will you be better off?
NATIONWIDE customers have been told the exact code to look out for to confirm a £100 payment has landed in their accounts. The high street lende r is giving away the cash as part of its Fairer Share programme. 1 The payment goes to members who bank with Nationwide regularly. Those who have a savings account or mortgage product could also qualify. Customers can expect the cash to land in their accounts between June 18 and July 4. And there is a code that customers should look out for on their bank statements to ensure they have received the cash - it is Nationwide Fairer Share Payment. But you must have opened a main current account with Nationwide by March 31 to get your hands on the money. You would have needed to have £100 in savings or owe £100 on your mortgage by that date. You also will need to have used your account within the first three months of this year. This is the third year that Nationwide has given away free cash to customers. Last year, it paid out a total of £385million to 3.85million customers and the year before £340million to 3.4million people. Back in December, the building society's boss confirmed it would make the payment for a third time. Major bank paying out £100 to customers It's worth noting, the £100 Fairer Share payment is separate to the £50 issued to around 12million Nationwide customers between April 9 and May 14. Recently the bank has also launched a new £200 switching offer to treat customers who sign up for its new bond. Nationwide's member inclusive bond is available to sign up to for all 16 million existing members and can be opened in branch, online or via the Banking App. This is a fixed-rate savings bond available only to Nationwide members. BANKING FREEBIES Nationwide is not the only bank giving customers free cash. TSB is giving new customers who switch to the high street bank a £100 switching incentive. You get the £100 upfront but if you spend on your debit card for 20 times in the first six months you get a £15 a month cashback. Santander has launched a new switching incentive to lure in customers. As part of the deal, customers will receive £180 within 90 days of making the switch. Cusomers need to pay £1,500 into the account within 60 days. This does not have to be deposited all at once. Customers must also set up two active household direct debits on the new account. This can include your council tax, mobile phone, home phone, broadband, paid-for TV packages, water, gas and electricity bills. Co-op Bank is also paying £175 to new customers. How do I switch bank accounts? SWITCHING bank accounts is a simple process and can usually be done through the Current Account Switch Service (CASS). Dozens of high street banks and building societies are signed up - there's a full list on CASS' website. Under the switching service, swapping banks should take seven working days. You don't have to remember to move direct debits across when moving, as this is done for you. All you have to do is apply for the new account you want, and the new bank will tell your existing one you're moving. There are a few things you can do before switching though, including choosing your switch date and transferring any old bank statements to your new account. You should get in touch with your existing bank for any old statements. When switching current accounts, consider what other perks might come with joining a specific bank or building society. Some banks offer 0% overdrafts up to a certain limit, and others might offer better rates on savings accounts. And some banks offer free travel or mobile phone insurance with their current accounts - but these accounts might come with a monthly fee.
