Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has issued a stern warning that builders and officials causing delays or disruptions in redevelopment projects in the country's financial capital Mumbai will face stringent consequences, including blacklisting and potential imprisonment.'True development is not just about GDP figures. It begins with ensuring every citizen has a safe, permanent, and dignified home. Until the last person in society lives with security and self-respect, our work remains incomplete," he said while handing over new homes to around 150 families under a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme in Mumbai's Kandivali suburb. He acknowledged the timely and quality completion of this specific project by the developer but made it clear that the government will not tolerate negligence, corruption, or delays in SRA redevelopment.'Builders who abandon projects, stop rent payments, or deliver substandard work will be blacklisted. In severe cases, they may face imprisonment. I also demand action against government officials who collude with such builders," he said.Goyal further insisted that beneficiaries must have the right to choose their developer, with no political or administrative interference, and that the SRA process must be fully transparent. He stressed the importance of maintaining fairness and transparency in ensuring that the projects meet their intended goals.'In the next five years, 3 crore families will receive free pucca homes. No Indian should be left behind in the journey to a developed and self-reliant nation," the minister said while reiterating the government's commitment to housing for all

India to evacuate citizens of Nepal, Sri Lanka from war-hit Iran

The Indian Embassy in Iran has said that the embassy will make efforts to evacuate citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka. The embassy noted that the efforts will be made at the request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka. Indian students reach an airport to board a flight from Armenia to New Delhi, under Operation Sindhu facilitated by the Government of India in view of the Israel-Iran conflict. (Randhir Jaiswal - X) "On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy's evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka," the Indian Embassy in Iran posted on X. The Indian government has launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran, given the deteriorating situation as a result of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Saturday that, so far, 517 Indian nationals have returned to India from Iran under Operation Sindhu. Jaiswal stated that a special flight from Turkmenistan's Ashgabat carrying Indians from Iran arrived in New Delhi on June 21. In a post on X, Jaiswal stated, "Operation Sindhu continues. A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in New Delhi at 0300 hrs on 21st June, bringing Indians from Iran home. With this, so far 517 Indian nationals from Iran have returned home under Operation Sindhu." The conflict between Israel and Iran entered its ninth day on Saturday. The conflict started after Israel, on June 13, launched a massive airstrike on Iranian military and nuclear sites, dubbed "Operation Rising Lion". In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale drone and missile operation, 'Operation True Promise 3', targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres. It is pertinent to note here that it is not the first time that the Indian government has launched an operation to evacuate citizens from another country. Earlier in 2023, India launched Operation Kaveri to evacuate its citizens during violent military clashes in Sudan. India had launched Operation Ajay to evacuate Indian nationals from Israel during the Israel-Hamas conflict in 2023. Operation Ganga was launched by the Indian government in 2022 to evacuate Indian nationals when war erupted between Russia and Ukraine. Earlier in 2021, the Indian government launched Operation Devi Shakti to evacuate Indian citizens from Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover. India launched Operation Samudra Setu to evacuate Indians through the sea during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. India launched Operation Raahat to evacuate citizens after civil conflict erupted in Yemen in 2015. Earlier in 2011, India launched Operation Safe Homecoming to evacuate Indian nationals during the civil war in the Arab Spring in Libya.

Middle East tensions: Israel in ‘constant contact' with India; says Israeli envoy on civilian evacuation

NEW DELHI: As tensions continue to rise between Israel and Iran, Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar has said that his country remains in 'constant contact' with ministry of external affairs (MEA) regarding the safety and evacuation of Indian nationals from Israel. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In an interview with PTI Videos on Friday, Ambassador Azar said, 'We are in constant contact with the MEA on all subjects that have to do with the evacuation of civilians. We've been cooperating since the beginning of the war, and this cooperation continues.' He added, 'Whatever message we get from the Indian government, we take it very seriously in order to make sure that all Indian citizens are safe.' The comments follow India's decision to evacuate its citizens from Israel on Thursday after an Iranian missile struck a hospital in the Beersheba region. The MEA issued a statement saying that Indian nationals wishing to leave would be assisted through land routes and then flown back to India. The Indian Embassy in Israel has been issuing regular advisories urging nationals to take precautions. On Wednesday, India launched 'Operation Sindhu' to evacuate its citizens from Iran amid the worsening security situation in the region. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed on Saturday that a total of 517 Indian nationals had been brought back from Iran under Operation Sindhu so far. A special flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in New Delhi early on June 21 carrying evacuees. The conflict, now in its ninth day, began on June 13 with Israel's 'Operation Rising Lion,' a large-scale offensive targeting Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure. Iran responded with 'Operation True Promise 3,' striking Israeli energy sites. Ambassador Azar had earlier told reporters that Israel would continue to act to 'degrade' Iran's missile and nuclear capabilities, though he hoped for a diplomatic resolution. With the situation remaining volatile, India's evacuation efforts from both Israel and Iran are expected to continue in coordination with authorities in both countries.

Bharat Mata row: Left front playing vote-bank politics, says Kerala BJP leader Surendran

Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president K. Surendran on Saturday (June 21, 2025) blamed the Left front for playing vote-bank politics by creating a furore over the portrait of 'Bharat Mata' displayed at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram. By opposing Bharat Mata and the saffron flag, the Ministers in the Left front government and the leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) think that they can make political gains. It is a clear conspiracy to appease a section of the voters aimed at making gains in the forthcoming local body and Assembly elections, he alleged. He said the Bharat Mata concept and saffron flag have been part of the Indian tradition for long. The State government and the Ministers have no powers to say that the portrait of the Bharat Mata cannot be displayed at the Raj Bhavan, he said.
