But he put on a performance worthy of the Tractor Boys' Prem relegation and was dominated by 26-year-old Australian Justis Huni until a sensational 10th round KO.
The battered and bruised winner said: "I am so thankful to everyone here, you got me through that, I could not have done it without you.
I have never claimed to be Usyk, with all the skills, but I know how to bite down on the gumshield and find a way to win.
"I should have performed better but I pulled something special out of the bag.
"He pulled out so many tricks and I didn't expect him to bank so many rounds But I screwed my head back on and got the job done."
The 26-year-old Aussie caught the hometown hero's attention with a two-jab combination in the opener, stabbing to the body and then the head.
But Wardley threatened him back with whipped right hands in spiteful Mexican Fly-branded blue gloves.
The Tractor Boys could not intimidate Huni with even their loudest songs and the underdog grew in confidence in the second and scored with the cleaner and more technical shots, while Wardley headhunted bluntly.

Wardley was slapped by three meaty left hooks in the third that had the partisan crowd panicked.
But then he landed a peach of a punch that stunned Huni and had him staggering backwards and covering up.
Huni ran away with the fourth, cracking Wardley with a pinpoint one-two and clipping him with a left hook.
Prior to his one-round demolition of Frazer Clarke, Wardley had a bad reputation for slow starts and was returning to bad habits.
Wardley inexplicably dropped his hands for the middle rounds and let his face get flattened by every shot Huni threw.
It was bafflingly bad boxing from a fighter who had shown freakish improvements with every previous bout. Huni landed every right hand he aimed and made a bloody mess of the Englishman.
Wardley remained a punchbag for the next few, either getting terrible advice from his corner or ignoring anything worthwhile.
Huni only took the challenge on five weeks notice and was doing Down Under proud with clever technical boxing and nerves of steel.
But, after losing almost every round in a stinker of a performance, Wardley uncorked a life-changing shot hat dropped Huni and he failed to rise from.
Wardley is now the WBA "interim" champion with Oleksandr Usyk defending his full version against Daniel Dubois on July 19 at Wembley.
And Wardley's Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren insisted the comeback king will be first in line for the winner.

Tottenham are prioritising the appointment of their new head coach but there is recognition that they must now act quickly following a slow start to their summer transfer business Tottenham's hesitance over the future of Ange Postecoglou has already seen them miss out on two midfielders and now they want to get a deal for the Aussie's successor in place to avoid missing out on further targets. The Bees head coach is thought to have a good relationship with Spurs technical director and compatriot Johan Lange, who is expected to remain at the club and he'll also be tasked with overseeing transfer business alongside the likely returning Fabio Paratici. Spurs have already lost key ground in the market, England international Angel Gomes, a player Tottenham had been pursuing, has opted to join Marseille on a free transfer after also snubbing West Ham. Gomes' contract with Lille is set to expire at the end of the month but he now looks poised to remain in France after warming to the idea of working with Roberto De Zerbi. Meanwhile, Real Betis' American maestro Johnny Cardoso has agreed to join Atletico Madrid, providing a club-to-club deal can be struck. Last summer, Spurs negotiated a £21million first-option clause - that can only be triggered during a two-week window - on USMNT starlet Cardoso when selling Giovani Lo Celso to Betis. But it now looks as though Atletico will pounce and conclude a deal at a higher price for the highly-rated 23-year-old, who is not willing to wait around for Tottenham. Names of continued interest are the likes of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, who has a £68m buy-out clause (worth £60m + £8m in add-ons) that becomes active this summer, and Eagles skipper Marc Guehi while the Europa League winners were also tracking Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo has intimated that he wants to join Manchester United, who have had a £55m bid rejected and it remains to be seen if Tottenham-linked Frank could potentially swing the balance and convince his current player to join him in north London, if he lands the job. Ultimately, until Spurs know who their new manager is going to be - he will have a clear say on targets - it's difficult to envisage them splashing out on mega-money deals. Business will also likely be shaped by potential outgoings with Cristian Romero and captain Heung-min Son among those that could yet seek to pursue new challenges. Inevitably, they would need to be replaced with quality. Spurs remain keen on signing Mathys Tel on a permanent basis but they want to negotiate with Bayern Munich and won't be triggering their mooted £45m buy-option. The hometown hero went into the contest as the favourite to secure the interim WBA heavyweight title and put himself at the front of the queue for a shot at the WBA belt. But Wardley looked in deep trouble against Australian Huni, a late replacement for intended opponent Jarrell Miller, who pulled out with a shoulder injury at the end of April. Fabio is home. 💙🥊 — Ipswich Town (@IpswichTown) June 7, 2025 Heading into the 10th round, Wardley appeared to be well behind on the scorecards and did not seem to have much left but he landed a right hand on the chin of Huni, who was sent to the canvas and counted out. It was an 18th knockout of 19 wins for 30-year-old Wardley, who remains unbeaten. He landed a strong shot on Huni, who had won all of his previous 12 fights, at the end of the first round, but by the third round the Australian had begun to take control. More blows rocked Wardley in the fourth round and by the seventh he was bleeding from the mouth, the speed of Huni causing him all sorts of problems. The crowd had been quietened with Wardley apparently on the verge of defeat but the atmosphere changed in an instant as he found the perfect response. Wardley could now be in line for a clash with WBA champion Oleksandr Usyk, who will fight Briton's Daniel Dubois at Wembley next month.
