Scandia man restores 170-year-old cabin; "Definitely a labor of love."

"History is very important to this area," said Jim Lindberg.
Jim was born and raised in Scandia. A part of the state that's known for its green, lush countryside—especially on a rainy day.
Since he was a kid, Jim has been passing by the old cabin on Parrish Road. The family of Swedish immigrant Nels Bengst built the home in 1856. When Jim retired, he decided to buy it for himself.
"The bottom of this building had totally rotted out," said Lindberg. "I knew the history of the property and I wanted to look at trying to restore it."
So, he began dismantling it, piece by piece. He took out the logs and the planks, power washed them and debugged them—which means he had to remove insects from the wood. The walls had to come down too. He found19th century Swedish newspapers inside them.
"There were spots that were rotted out. Dovetail corners had to be replaced," said Lindberg. "Definitely a labor of love."
He let the planks sit in a barn for a year and then began putting it all back together, with a Cathedral ceiling, just like the Swedish settlers did.
The cabin is roughly 16-feet by 32-feet. Not the biggest place but at one point a family of nine actually lived here.
For the spots that were too rotted out, Lindberg used wood from his property, then added a few modern amenities so guests can stay comfortably. It took him five, long years to complete his rustic restoration.
"To tell the truth, there may have been some naysayers a long time ago, but there aren't any now. It turned out much better than I ever anticipated," said Lindberg.
The cabin has even been part of an historic homes tour in Scandia.
"When you travel in Sweden you will see these types of cabins all over the place," said Susan Rodsjo of the Scandia Heritage Alliance.
Rodsjo says there are far more log cabins in the area than you can see, and homeowners are starting to discover them.
"There is a gentleman near our downtown business area of Scandia who had no idea he had bought a house that was log underneath until he started to renovate his living room and cut through the wall and realized there were no studs. It was all logs," said Rodsjo.
Discovering the past, and now Jim hopes other homeowner also return to a time that was.
"I hope they feel like taking care of a property that maybe looks like it doesn't have a chance, it may be worth it," said Lindberg.
Lindberg wanted to thank everyone that helped him restore the old Swedish cabin. Scandia also has plans to restore an old water tower barn in the coming year.

Fishing boat missing off Cape Cod, GPS unit found on beach

An extensive Coast Guard search is underway after a fishing boat went missing off Cape Cod Sunday morning. The first clue that the 30-foot fishing boat had gone missing off the coast was a father and daughter finding the boat's GPS on the beach. The Coast Guard said the missing captain is Shawn Arsenault. His family said his girlfriend was on board too, saying they're really worried about him and pray he's found. GPS found Sam Miller and her dad found a GPS navigator saying "F/V Seahorse" while they were walking on the beach Sunday morning. "Just hoping they find him quickly," said Sam Miller. "I noticed in the surf there was something floating, so I went down to see what it was, and it turned out to be, we could tell it was a GPS unit off of a boat." GPS unit found on a Cape Cod beach with "F/V Seahorse" written on it. CBS Boston That Sunday Sam and her dad went to Rock Harbor in Orleans trying to return the GPS and left note on Arsenault's truck, but after still no word Monday, they went back again then called the harbormaster. "My family went to Rock Harbor a couple of times and saw that the nobody had picked up the note-the truck was still there so my dad contacted the harbormaster and let him know what was going on and said, 'can you let us know if everything OK with this boat,'" said Miller. "And that person, 'responded thanks for letting us know we'll look into this.'" Now the Coast Guard is actively scouring the waters of Cape Cod Bay. Cellphone pinged off Chatham The Seahorse was known to fish near the Target shipwreck off Eastham, but officials said a cellphone believed to be on board last pinged two miles off Chatham. "We activated the Cape Cod Mutual Response System," said Commander Cliff Graham with the Coast Guard. Photo of the missing 30 foot fishing boat Seahorse. U.S. Coast Guard The fog and thunderstorms didn't help with visibility in the search. "Up today we are under a small craft advisory," said Commander Graham. "Our search efforts are a little diminished because of the weather." As the search continues, the captain's family and those who found the GPS are hoping for some good news. "I would like to be optimistic because the alternative is not so great," said Miller. "Hopefully he'll just come chugging back into the harbor and be like what's all the fuss about?" The Coast Guard says they don't think the weather on Sunday factored into the missing boat, adding to the mystery. Rescuers say they will reassess Wednesday morning to see how the search continues.

Pilot program in the works for a public Red Rocks shuttle in the Denver metro area

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Colorado is one of the most popular attractions in the state, and it may soon have a public transit option to get there. RJ Sangosti/MediaNews Group/The Denver Post via Getty Images Whether it's hiking or attending a concert, many visitors are driving to get to the world-famous venue. Officials in Denver and Jefferson County are building on an idea first shared by the environmental advocacy group Green Latinos to develop some form of public transportation. Currently, RTD's W line can take riders from downtown Denver all the way to the Jefferson County government center in Golden. But that's the end of the road for the line. The plan being considered is to use a shuttle -- either vans or buses -- to take light rail passengers from Golden to Red Rocks as well as several other outdoor attractions. Jefferson County Commissioner Andy Kerr referred to it as "West tracks" and would include a stop at Dinosaur Ridge, mountain biking and hiking areas as well as Red Rocks. Kerry said the hope is to do a test run in the fall. "We were really hoping to get something off the ground this summer but a lot of our partners -- Jefferson County, Denver Parks have offered up some money for this summer -- it might just be a weekend where we run the shuttle from here from the Jeffco government center and try it out. Hopefully people come and use it and we can work out some kinks so that next summer we could as early as the Memorial Day weekend really hit the ground running and maybe have this up and running," Kerr said. RTD says Jefferson County did submit an application for their partnership program, which allocates grant money for a service that would have stops at Red Rocks, but they say the proposal would not accommodate evening concerts. Kerr says currently the W Line doesn't operate late into the evening and for purposes of the pilot program they wanted to avoid having trying to get RTD to adjust service hours.
