Former Oakland youth boxing program director faces mail fraud, tax evasion charges
The former director of an Oakland nonprofit pleaded not guilty Monday to embezzling more than $100,000 from the organization he once led.
Howard Solomon ran the East Oakland Boxing Association, a nonprofit organization that provides boxing lessons, coaching and mentorship to children. The gym is located on 98th St. near San Leandro.
As the director of EOBA, Solomon was in charge of managing daily operations, fundraising and oversight of the organization's budget and finances.
He's accused of using EOBA funds for personal use and is facing charges of embezzlement, mail fraud and tax evasion.
Back in 2019 Steph and Ayesha Curry were guests on the Ellen DeGeneres special "Ellen's Greatest Night of Giveaways" when they presented Solomon and his organization with $50,000 and gifts.
According to court documents, he pocketed that money. Solomon has been accused of embezzling funds collected for the organization since at least 2017.
He allegedly used money from EOBA accounts to purchase $100,000 worth of personal items from Amazon and falsely claimed these purchases were for the organization.
He allegedly used the organization's accounts to pay for vacation rental properties and bought a Ford Explorer with EOBA funds that he later traded in for a Cadillac Escalade.
Solomon is charged with owing more federal income tax than was declared due on his federal income tax returns and filing false and fraudulent income tax returns for tax years 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
He appeared in federal district court on Monday and entered a not guilty plea. He is currently out on a $25,000 bond.

Boy at park reports unknown man solicited him for lewd acts
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – A boy who was at Packard Park reported that he was solicited by an unknown man who offered him money to watch him perform lewd acts. The boy, whose age was redacted from a police report, and his mother called police around 1 p.m. Wednesday to report the incident. The boy told police that he was by the pond, waiting for family members to arrive to fish, when he noticed a man sitting in a dark-colored Ford SUV watching him. He said the man then got out of the vehicle and continued staring at him, according to the police report. The boy said he asked the man, 'You good, bro?' to which the man replied that he was just at the park, hanging out. He went on to say, 'I was at Perkins Park a little while ago, but there were no kids there,' the report stated. The boy told police that he thought the statement was odd, but said he did not respond. He said the man then asked if he 'wanted to make some money,' and when he questioned the man about what he meant, he said the man offered to pay him $150 to perform lewd acts while watching one another. The boy told police that the man got back into his vehicle when he told him that he was not interested, but he said he continued to watch him. He said he eventually left when he took out his phone and began taking photos of the man's car. He then called his mother, who called police. He described the man as being an approximately 60-year-old white man wearing black overall/suspender-type pants and a green t-shirt, with longer gray hair that was covered by some type of hat. Motorcyclist dies in McHenry County crash
MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. — A motorcyclist died in a McHenry County crash Wednesday evening and alcohol is believed to be a factor. Authorities responded to the report of a three-vehicle crash near the 5800 block of Route 47 jut before 5:25 p.m. Police believe a 44-year-old man, of Crystal Lake, riding a 2009 Harley Davidson, was traveling southbound on US 47 and a 2016 Ford Explorer was traveling northbound. The motorcycle then crossed the center line and struck the Ford in the northbound lane. It then struck a 2018 Chevy pickup truck. Motorcyclist dies in Buffalo Grove crash The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The passengers of the other vehicles were not injured. 5 hurt as ambulance, police SUV crash blocks apart in Manchester
Five people were injured in nearly back-to-back crashes near Elliot Hospital involving an ambulance, a police SUV and two other cars Wednesday. An AMR ambulance and a Volvo wagon collided around 11:40 a.m. near the entrance to the hospital and the intersection of Tarrytown Road and Nelson Street, Manchester fire officials said. The ambulance was responding to a call when the collision caused the driver to lose control and the rig rolled over. Manchester Police said the ambulance was entering the intersection with its lights and siren activated when the accident happened. The two medics in the front seat of the ambulance were trapped inside, but fire crews helped them remove the front windshield so they could get out. They were taken to the hospital for evaluation. Police said the driver of the Volvo reported no injuries. While crews were working at that crash scene, a Ford Explorer driven by a Manchester Police officer collided with a Jeep Compass near the intersection of Valley and Jewett streets, just a few blocks over and near the other side of the Elliot. The Jeep rolled over and crews had to extricate the driver and a passenger who were trapped inside, fire officials said. Doors were removed from the driver's side of the Jeep. Police said the officer and the two occupants of the Jeep were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The identities of the people involved were not released. Anyone who witnessed either accident is asked to call Manchester Police at 603-668-8711.
