'Caregivers Need Care Too': Bruce Willis's Wife Has Reflected On Gene Hackman And Betsy Arakawa's Tragic Deaths Amid Bruce's Dementia Diagnosis

Buzz Feed11-03-2025

Last month, the sad news broke that beloved actor Gene Hackman, his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, and one of their pet dogs had been found dead in their Santa Fe home. Gene was 95 years old, and Betsy was 63. The two had been married since 1991.

At the time, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said that authorities did not believe 'foul play was a factor' in the deaths, and initially, it was widely speculated that the couple may have died due to carbon monoxide poisoning. However, it was later confirmed that Santa Fe City Fire Department had not found any evidence of a leak in the property.
The search warrant affidavit also revealed that Hackman and Arakawa's bodies were found after two maintenance workers for the gated community where they lived called 911, and that nobody had seen the couple for two weeks. When officers arrived, the door to the residence was ajar but there were no signs of forced entry.
Arakawa's body was found on the floor of a bathroom on the ground floor of the residence, and an orange prescription bottle was close by with pills scattered on the countertop. The affidavit added that her body 'showed obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face, and mummification in both hands and feet.' Hackman's body was found in a 'similar' condition to his wife's in what is thought to have been a mud room close to the kitchen. The deputies on the scene suspected that he had 'suddenly fallen,' and sunglasses and a walking cane were located close to his body.
It was later confirmed that the dead dog was found in a crate in the bathroom closet, and two healthy dogs were also on the property — one inside the home and another outside.
The affidavit requested a 'thorough search and investigation' into Hackman and Arakawa's deaths, and on Friday, the tragic details of Hackman's final days were shared in a press conference with the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator's chief medical examiner, Dr. Heather Jarrell.
While Hackman and Arakawa's bodies were found on Feb. 26, it was previously reported that Hackman had likely died on Feb. 18, as this was the last day any heart activity was recorded by his pacemaker. Arakawa, on the other hand, is thought to have died on Feb. 11, with Dr. Jarrell saying that her cause of death was hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare infectious disease carried by rodents that can cause flulike symptoms and affect the lungs and heart.
Authorities also identified the deceased dog as Zinna, and said that the pet had been picked up from a veterinary hospital on Feb. 9 following a procedure, which could be why it was being kept in a crate in the couple's home.
Dr. Jarrell also shed some light on Hackman's heartbreaking final week of life, saying that due to his advanced Alzheimer's, it is "quite possible that he was not aware that she [his wife] was deceased.'
Officials have found no evidence that Hackman had communicated with anybody after Arakawa's death, and could not determine if he would have been able to care for himself. Neurologist Dr. Brendan Kelley added that Alzheimer's disease can leave patients unable to act on their own emotional discomfort, including eating, sleeping, and bathing themselves.
"A person might feel worried or frightened, but at the same time, they might not be capable to take the actions that you or I might normally think to do in order to alleviate that worry or concern, such as calling somebody else, or going to speak to a neighbor,' he explained.
Needless to say, many were left devastated by this update as they reflected on the fear, confusion, and discomfort that Hackman must have felt before he died.
And now, Bruce Willis's wife, Emma Heming Willis, has issued an emotional statement calling for people to look out for caregivers like Arakawa.
For reference, Bruce was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023, which is the most common form of dementia for people under 60. It came one year after the Emmy-winning actor was diagnosed with aphasia, which impacts somebody's ability to understand or produce speech.

Bruce's family previously explained that the dementia impacts his ability to communicate, and in October, his ex-wife, Demi Moore, shared an update on how he is doing.
The couple split in 2000 but have maintained a close friendship, in part due to their shared children.
'The disease is what the disease is. And I think you have to be in real deep acceptance of what that is. But for where he's at, he is stable," she said at the 2024 Hamptons International Film Festival. 'What I always encourage is to just meet them where they're at. When we're holding on to what was, I think it's a losing game.'
And in a new Instagram video, Emma has reflected on the fact that caring for somebody with dementia requires a lot of support. 'This is not something I would normally comment on,' she began. 'But I do really believe that there is some learning in this story in regards to the tragic passing of Mr and Mrs Hackman. It's just made me think of this broader story, and that is that caregivers need care, too.'
'They are vital, and it is so important that we show up for them so that they can continue to show up for their person,' Emma continued. 'I think that there's this common misconception that caregivers, they've got it figured out, they've got it covered, they're good — I don't subscribe to that.'
'I think that we need to be showing up for them so that they can continue to show up for their person,' she concluded, adding in the post's caption: 'Caregivers need care too. Period. Full stop.'
Emma was widely praised for her statement, and Bruce and Demi's daughter Tallulah Willis was among the people to show their support in the video's comments, where she simply wrote: 'I love you so much.'

After Taylor Swift Called Scooter Braun Her 'Nemesis,' He Has Said That He Genuinely Thought She'd Want To Work With Him When He Bought Her Masters

It's no secret that Taylor Swift has long considered Scooter Braun her 'nemesis,' with Scooter being Kanye West's manager during the rapper's infamous 2016 beef with the singer. Kevin Mazur /for The Recording Academy, Jemal Countess / Getty Images fo Anti-Defamation League If you need reminding, the feud resulted in Taylor being branded a 'snake' across social media and led to her retreating from the public eye for almost an entire year. At the peak of her downfall, Justin Bieber even posted a screenshot from a FaceTime call with laughing Scooter and Kanye to his Instagram page alongside the goading caption: 'Taylor swift what up." So, it's pretty unsurprising that when Taylor's former manager Scott Borchetta sold his record label, Big Machine Records, to Scooter's company, Ithaca Holdings, for $300 million back in 2019, Taylor wasn't exactly happy about it. For reference, this deal meant that Scooter would profit from the sales and use of all of the music that Taylor released through Big Machine during her 10-year contract with them, which included her first six albums. Taylor addressed the situation in a lengthy Tumblr post at the time, where she said that she didn't sign a new contract with Big Machine because she knew that Scott was planning to sell. She also revealed that she rejected a new contract even though it offered her the opportunity to 'earn' the rights to one old album for every new one she released. Taylor then said that Scott selling to Scooter was her 'worst case scenario' as she called out the 'incessant, manipulative bullying' she'd received at Scooter's hands over the years. Taylor added that Scooter had 'stripped' her of her life's work that she 'wasn't given the opportunity to buy.' 'When I left my masters in Scott's hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter,' she wrote in the post. 'Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words 'Scooter Braun' escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to.' Related: Here's Why People Are Raising Their Eyebrows Over Chris Pratt's Post About The Fatal Shooting Of His 'Parks And Recreation' Costar Jonathan Joss Scooter has previously admitted that when he acquired Big Machine he assumed that he would 'be in business' with all of the artists that it covered, saying during an appearance on NPR's The Limits podcast: 'The regret I have there is that I made the assumption that everyone, once the deal was done, was going to have a conversation with me, see my intent, see my character and say, 'Great, let's be in business together.' I made that assumption with people that I didn't know." "I didn't appreciate how that all went down. I thought it was unfair," he added at the time. "But I also understand, from the other side, they probably felt it was unfair, too." And in a new interview for Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast, Scooter opened up some more about Taylor specifically as he admitted that he thought she would be enthusiastic about working with him despite his connections to Kanye and Justin. Related: 21 Times Celebrities Revealed Wildly Juicy, Shady, Or Even Disturbing Things In Interviews 'When I bought Big Machine, I thought I was going to work with all the artists on [it]. I thought it was going to be an exciting thing,' Scooter began. 'Taylor, she and I had only met three or four times. And one of the times, years earlier, it was really a great engagement; she invited me to her private party, she respected me.' 'In between that time since I'd seen her last, I started managing Kanye West, I managed Justin Bieber. I knew she didn't get along with them,' he continued. 'This is where my arrogance came in — I had a feeling she probably didn't like me cause I managed them, but I thought that once this announcement happened, she would talk to me, see who I am, and we would work together.' Scooter told Steven that he was set to call Taylor to discuss their future when her Tumblr post went live, leaving him 'shocked.' However, he also insisted that the experience gave him a newfound empathy for the people he does work with, saying: 'I'd always say: 'Yeah, I understand', but I never knew what it was like to be on the global stage like that.' "I never knew what criticism like that felt like,' Scooter continued. 'And like I told you, the biggest gift that I got from that was understanding that all the praise I had received up until that moment was not deserved, and all the hate I got after that moment was not deserved, because none of these people knew me. She didn't know me." As it happens, Scooter ended up selling Taylor's catalog, including all associated videos and artwork, to Shamrock Holdings for more than $300 million in October 2020, just over a year after he bought Big Machine. The following month, Taylor issued a statement revealing that her and Scooter's respective teams had been in negotiations for her to regain ownership of the masters, but she backed out when his team allegedly asked her to sign an 'ironclad NDA' stating that she would never say another word about Scooter 'unless it was positive.' Taylor went on to say that she was 'open' to partner with Shamrock when they initially reached out to her, but was left dismayed when she learned that the terms of Scooter's sale meant that his company would continue to profit from her work. 'As soon as we started communication with Shamrock, I learned that under their terms Scooter Braun will continue to profit off my old musical catalog for many years,' she wrote. 'I was hopeful and open to the possibility of a partnership with Shamrock, but Scooter's participation is a non-starter for me.' As you probably know, this entire mess led to Taylor rerecording her first six albums — complete with brand new tracks 'from the vault' — in order to have ownership of her music. And Taylor only had her self-titled debut and 2017 album Reputation left to re-release when she announced at the end of last month that she'd bought the rights to the original master recordings from Shamrock for a reported $360 million. Dutch royal family shares health update after Princess Catharina-Amalia, 21, rushed to hospital

The future queen of the Netherlands underwent surgery to repair a fracture to her upper arm after she was hospitalized during a horseback-riding accident, the Dutch royal family said. Princess Catharina-Amalia, the 21-year-old heir to the Dutch throne and daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, broke her arm after being thrown from her horse on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Dutch Royal Palace confirmed that Catharina-Amalia, who is known as Princess of Orange, will remain under the watchful eye of doctors and nurses at UMC Utrecht this week.
