Red Sox may call on Rafael Devers to fill in at third after Bregman goes down: Report (Image Source: Getty Images)
The Boston Red Sox might be forced to make some big changes after a key player suffered an unexpected injury. While the team has many choices to fill the gap, one name keeps coming up as the possible solution.
Fans are wondering- could Rafael Devers step back into a role he hasn't played this season?
Alex Bregman's sudden injury opens up a major spot for Rafael Devers in Red Sox lineup
During a game against the Baltimore Orioles on May 23, 2025, Alex Bregman left the field. He stopped playing because his right leg hurt. Later, team doctors found Bregman had a strained right quad- the same muscle he injured in 2021.
His recovery at that time took two months. This is a serious concern for the Red Sox. Bregman's absence leaves the squad a major hole in the infield starting at third base.
The Red Sox brought young Triple-A Worcester player Marcelo Mayer in response. Mayer is mainly a shortstop but has been training to play other positions, including third base. He's just 21 years old and has never played in the big leagues before.
Manager Alex Cora said the team is still thinking through all the options. He shared with reporters,
'We've got a few names we're considering. It's not decided yet.'

With Bregman at third base, the Red Sox gave Devers a break from fielding. But now, with Bregman hurt, some experts think Devers could go back to his old spot at third base.
D
evers has been in great form at the plate. He has raised his statistics following a sluggish start to the season and presently has a .303 batting average. Furthermore, first in walks, he boasts a .980 OPS, therefore assisting the team in scoring runs.
Ron Darling and Brian Kenny on a recent MLB Network's MLB Now Showdown debated the possibility of moving Devers back to third base. They said it might be the smartest move for the team right now, especially since Mayer is still new.
What the Red Sox decide next could affect the rest of their season.

Rohit Sharma bows to Arjun Tendulkar after Mumbai Indians' IPL exit
Rohit Sharma and Arjun Tendulkar (Image credit: BCCI/IPL) NEW DELHI: Skipper Shreyas Iyer lit up the Narendra Modi Stadium with a scintillating unbeaten 87 off just 41 deliveries, powering Punjab Kings to a five-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 and securing their place in the IPL 2025 final. PBKS will now face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the summit clash on Tuesday, a rematch of their earlier encounter in Qualifier 1. With Mumbai Indians bowing out of the tournament, IPL is now guaranteed to crown a first-time champion this season. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Following MI's exit, veteran batter and ex-captain Rohit Sharma , who led the team to five IPL titles, was seen bidding farewell to his teammates. A video that has gone viral on social media shows Rohit playfully bowing down to Arjun Tendulkar in a light-hearted moment. Reflecting on the loss, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya praised Shreyas Iyer's match-winning knock and admitted that MI's bowling execution fell short under pressure. Pandya also addressed some key strategic decisions, including the timing of Jasprit Bumrah's overs. "Especially Shreyas, the way he batted, he took his chances and played really well. It was a par score, but it really needed great execution from the bowling unit. They were really calm and put us under pressure, and we were not able to execute the way we wanted. [Should Bumrah have bowled the 17th over?] In hindsight, it would have been different, but maybe a little too early," Hardik Pandya said in the post-match presentation.

Watch: MI Coach Mahela Jayawardene's Constant Intervention Leaves Jasprit Bumrah In Splits During PBKS vs MI
Mumbai Indians dream of lifting their sixth IPL title completely shattered on Sunday after they lost against Punjab Kings in the Qualifier 2 match. Despite presenting a memorable comeback in the league with sixth consecutive victories, Hardik Pandya and co failed to reach the summit clash and faced a heartbreaking elimination. After posting a total of 203/6 in 20 overs, MI failed to grab the key moments as PBKS marched into the final with an over to spare and five wickets in hand. After the match, many fans took to social media to express their disappointment over Hardik's captaincy. Even during the game, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene did not seem to be quite happy with the all-rounder's decision-making as he was seen adjusting the field from the dugout. This was nit the first time that the Sri Lanka great tried to intervene in the match proceedings as during the Eliminator match against Gujarat Titans, he was seen giving some tips to pacer Jasprit Bumrah. In a video now going viral on social media from Qualifier 2 match, Bumrah was seen placed near the boundary rope, where Jayawardene was making some gestures towards Hardik. He was indeed asking the MI skipper to make some changes in the field placement. As Jayawardene got bit too excited, MI batting coach Kieron Pollard, who was sitting in the dugout, could not control his smile. Seeing all this, Bumrah also failed to control his laughter as ran towards Rohit Sharma, who was sitting in the dugout during the second innings. Sums up Mumbai Indians' leadership and captaincy. — 🇮🇳the_old_guy (@theoldguy20) June 1, 2025 After the loss, Hardik Pandya acknowledged that the decision-making during the crucial overs could have been better, specifically mentioning Jasprit Bumrah's under-utilisation at a key moment. "Especially Shreyas, the way he batted, he took his chances and played really well. It was a par score, but it really needed great execution from the bowling unit. They were really calm and put us under pressure, and we were not able to execute the way we wanted. After Glenn Maxwell this star cricketer retires from international cricket due to.....
South Africa's star wicketkeeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen has shocked the cricket world by retiring from international cricket on June 2. 33-year-old Klaasen made this announcement on his social media account on Monday. He talked about focusing on family and future. Heinrich Klaasen also said that representing the country was the biggest honor for him. It was his childhood dream. Klaasen said, 'This is a sad day for me as I have decided to stay away from international cricket. It took me a lot of time to decide what is best for me and my family in the future. It was indeed a very difficult decision, but one that I am completely at peace with.' Image credit: X (Formerly Twitter) Klaasen finally said, 'Playing with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honor of my career. I am looking forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so. I will always be a big Proteas supporter and I want to thank everyone who has supported me and my teammates throughout my career.' Klaasen also said that he will always support the South African team and thanked his fans. Klaasen was Sunrisers Hyderabad's most expensive player in IPL 2025. He is expected to continue playing in T20 leagues around the world. The aggressive wicketkeeper-batsman played all three formats for South Africa in 102 matches. Klaasen has featured in 4 Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is including all his four international centuries in ODIs, scoring 3145 runs since his debut in 2018. Klaasen's 117.14 strike rate is the second-best among all players who have scored 2000 ODI runs, incidentally behind Maxwell's 126.70. Klaasen recorded the highest ever ODI score by a number 5 batsman in ODI cricket with his unbeaten 174 off 83 balls against Australia in 2023, which included 13 sixes and as many fours.
