Timothy West died ‘peacefully' at care home after three-month hospital stay
Actor Timothy West died 'peacefully with his family around him' at a care home where he was receiving palliative care after a three-month stay in hospital following a fall, an inquest has heard.
West, who was married to actress Prunella Scales for more than 60 years, starred in TV shows such as comedy drama Brass, sitcom Not Going Out and soaps Coronation Street and EastEnders.
His family announced last November that he had died aged 90 with his friends and family around him, some of whom attended a hearing into his death at Westminster Coroner's Court on Thursday by videolink.
Assistant coroner Ellie Oakley said: 'Timothy West had an unwitnessed fall near his home on 11 August 2024 which resulted in a significant traumatic brain injury.
'It is not possible to determine how the fall happened and there is no evidence of others being involved.
'He was treated in hospital for around three months before being discharged to a care home on 5 November 2024 for palliative care.
'Unfortunately he was not well enough to be discharged to his home despite receiving appropriate care in the care home.
'He died on 12 November 2024.'
The coroner addressed the family and close friends who viewed proceedings online at the conclusion of the inquest, telling them: 'I would like to end by passing on my sincerest condolences to Mr West's family and friends for this tragic loss of their loved one.'
West had been living at Wandsworth Common Care Home in the days leading up to his death.
The home's general manager, Thomas Holden, said in a statement read out at Thursday's inquest: 'On 12 November his family were with him all day.
'They continued to stay with him in his room during the evening and he passed away peacefully with his family around him at 19:20.'
Mr Holden said West was admitted with a view to trying to rehabilitate him enough so that he could go home 'as he wished to spend his last days there' but that there was a 'slow decline' in his health over the days he resided there.
West was admitted to hospital in August last year after a fall near his home.
Members of the public came across him unconscious on a footpath near Wandsworth Common, the inquest heard, and an ambulance crew attended and took him to St George's Hospital in Tooting after a neurological assessment.
He remained in hospital for around three months during which time the actor's loved ones eventually decided to prioritise his 'comfort and dignity' and arranged for him to be discharged to the private care home.
The medical cause of death was given as a subdural haematoma and extra-axial haemorrhage, with a traumatic brain injury and non-convulsive status epilepticus, aspiration pneumonia and hypertension as contributing factors.
In a statement announcing his death last year, West's children Juliet, Samuel and Joseph said: 'After a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage, our darling father Timothy West died peacefully in his sleep yesterday evening. He was 90 years old.
'Tim was with friends and family at the end.
'He leaves his wife, Prunella Scales, to whom he was married for 61 years, a sister, a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. All of us will miss him terribly.'
West and Scales, 92, who played Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, appeared in the documentary series Great Canal Journeys between 2014 and 2021, which saw them travelling on narrowboats.
The couple married in 1963 and had two sons, Samuel and Joseph.
West was also married to actor Jacqueline Boyer from 1956 to 1961, and they had a daughter, Juliet.
In Brass the Bradford-born actor played ruthless self-made businessman Bradley Hardacre from 1982 to 1984 before returning for a third series in 1990, while in Not Going Out he played Geoffrey, the father of Lucy Adams, played by Sally Bretton.
He appeared as Eric Babbage in seven episodes of Coronation Street in 2013, and in EastEnders he played Stan Carter from 2014 to 2015.
His film roles included Commissioner Berthier in The Day Of The Jackal (1973), King Francis in From Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998), and Nazi physician and war criminal Karl Gebhardt in Hitler: The Last Ten Days (1973).
On stage, he was a regular performer of Shakespeare, playing Lear in 2016 and 2002.
In 1984, West was appointed a CBE for his services to drama in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Before acting, West attended the John Lyon School and Bristol Grammar School, and worked as an office furniture salesman and a recording technician before becoming an assistant stage manager at Wimbledon Theatre in 1956.

'I own Beyond Paradise's Ten Mile Kitchen and not all locals are happy about it'
BBC Deayj in Paradise spin-off Beyond Paradise has proed a hit with viewers and now the celebrity chef who owns the restaurant featured has spoken out The BBC's Death in Paradise and its UK-based spin-off, Beyond Paradise have captured the nation, with filming in Looe, Cornwall. Kris Marshall reprises his role as Humphrey Goodman from the original series, now leading a new troop of detectives in the quaint town of Shipton Abbott. The hit show delves into his personal life too, depicting his relationship with his fiancée, Martha Lloyd (played by Sally Bretton), who's recently launched The Ten Mile Kitchen. Yet, the real-life backdrop to this on-screen eatery is actually 2024 Great British Menu winner Ben Palmer's highly-regarded establishment, The Sardine Factory. Ben shared insights with the Daily Express regarding his restaurant's newfound fame as a viewer favourite and the contrasting opinions among locals witnessing its escalating renown. Since the third series of Beyond Paradise showcased it, the Sardine Factory has seen an astonishing hike in interest – its bookings shot up to 245, scaling a peak from a modest 45 the previous week, marking an eye-opening leap by 444%. While the surge spells great news for Ben's venture, not all residents are thrilled. Ben conceded: "You know you get a lot of kickback from a lot of locals saying, we don't want more people coming to town, but you know what it's so important to bring tourism to the restaurant business, we rely on it," reports the Express. Despite a mixed reception, Ben disclosed that many locals are enthused about the new attraction, saying: "As locals, we were all really proud when we saw our beautiful kind of hometown on the telly, it was really kind of cool, and everybody was kind of asking, 'where is this beautiful place?'" He added: "You know, we're incredibly lucky. It kind of gives you a sense of feeling like we're really proud that this is our hometown, and it just showcases it, making you realise how beautiful it is as well. "It's a lovely place, but then when you come to see it, you think, 'my God, it is actually,' we're very lucky. It's a very beautiful place, and then everybody wants to come and visit where they saw on TV, which was really cool." Ben even confessed his surprise at not realising the show Beyond Paradise's popularity, stating: "I never kind of really watched it, and then obviously I thought, you know, it's in my own town and stuff, you might catch a glimpse of someone you know. I started to watch it and, you know what? It's pretty good." In a bid to revitalise the area, Ben launched his restaurant in 2018, alongside the introduction of a museum for the town. Named 'The Sardine Factory', the restaurant honours its history as a former sardine processing plant.

Shocking moment families brawl at Disneyland after 'row over queue cutting'
A savage brawl broke out at Disneyland after furious tourists became fed up with queue-cutters. Despite being deemed the 'Happiest Place on Earth', the scuffle between a couple and a family of three even saw a young child be assaulted near the Crazy Animal City ride. In a video taken by another person in the queue, a man wearing a black t-shirt grabbed the other man, in a white t-shirt, by the neck. They both wrestled each other as a woman wearing a hat with rabbit ears attached to it repeatedly flailed out her arms. She tried to hit both of the men before running at a visitor, part of the family of three, who carried a child. The woman hit both of them, including the little girl, which caused the mum to break down into tears and crouch on the ground. She kept the child tightly in her arms and held her close to her chest. As she cried, the focus went back to the two men as the woman wearing the rabbit hat went to join in on the scuffle. The man in the white t-shirt who appeared to be part of the family, was wrestled to the ground after he fell on some steps. When he hit the floor, the woman who was still holding her child became hysterical as she reached out her arm to the man. She then stood up and grabbed the woman wearing the hat and began to shout. Security personnel eventually intervened in the fight - which local press said was caused by an argument over the queue - and were able to break up the altercation which took place at Disneyland Park, in Shanghai, China. The shocking scenes attracted a large number of tourists who watched in horror, as reported by NeedToKnow. It is not known whether those involved suffered consequences as a result of their actions but some outlets have said that tourists may face a permanent ban on entering the park if they engage in violent behaviour. It has also been reported that the couple tried to have a photo together which was blocked by the family, leading to a heated exchange before punches began swinging. This is not the first time an outrageous brawl broke out at Disneyland - with another viral video taken of a fight in 2023. Punches and kicks were thrown between two families on the walkway between Storybook Land Canal Boats and Mad Tea Party rides in Fantasyland. A tourist wearing blue pushes another clad in red before a second guest - also wearing red - runs up and throws a punch at the apparent instigator. The camera pans away but swings back to reveal two more guests joining in. Another two people are absorbed in the brawl as bystanders rush from the scene. One man topples to the ground - only to be kicked by a woman as he attempts to regain his balance. Small children closest to the fight hang onto a nearby guardrail as they inch away. Disneyland security hurried to break up the fight while Fantasyland cast members closed off the area between the parade route and the Mad Hatter gift shop. According to visitor who filmed the scuffle, the family wearing red was asked to move aside by another family attempting to pass. The family in red 'gave them attitude' and told them to go around. However, this was not possible, as there was only a small opening and the second family had strollers. The families continued to exchange verbal blows before teenage girls from both sides began to argue 'in close proximity' - launching an all-out fistfight. Park officials say the party that initiated the incident was immediately removed, adding that 'any type of violence will not be tolerated at Disneyland Resort'.
