'My wife went through a lot with me' How Danny Dyer reinvented himself
'This is a tune that takes me back to a time when I just remember men and women jumping around and there was a lot of love in the air,' Dyer told presenter Lauren Laverne before spinning 'Playing with Knives' by Bizarre Inc. 'OK, he added, 'it might have been down to narcotics …'
It was the little details that sang here. In the wake of his appearance in Human Traffic playing a drug dealer he'd have people turning up outside his house hoping to take drugs with him. He was still living on a council estate at the time. They even nicked his dustbin once. 'And you try getting a dustbin from the council, darling,' he said to Laverne. 'It's a mission.'

Dyer made a lot of bad calls. 'I did go off the rails for many years,' he admitted. The aforementioned drink and drugs. There was an affair. And then there was the lad's mag advice column. He didn't even write it, but they paid him two grand a week. Until the magazine published something particularly heinous under Dyer's name.
It was his success in EastEnders that gave him the space to realise he needed to change things. That something was rehab and therapy.
Now he's a husband, a father and a grandfather.
'I'm really good at it now. I was rubbish for many years. A bit like my dad was, I suppose. My wife has gone through a lot with me, I think.
'I'm very grateful that she gave me another shot. She was saying to me the other day that she's glad she did because she's got the best version of me.'
He met his wife Jo when they were both 13 and she has stuck with him through thick and a lot of thin. Listening to this I did think I'd like to hear Jo's story actually.
But Dyer was interesting because he is clearly trying to work out his ideas on what makes a man a man? Is it OK to be affectionate? Is it acceptable to be an alpha male and still wear a pink dressing gown? (That was the pitch that sold him on EastEnders, by the way.)
'Toxic masculinity is a thing,' he said at one point, 'but it's not necessarily because you're a male. It's because you're a not very nice human being.'
From masculinity to social geography. Did you know that there are still two streets in the UK named after Joseph Stalin? One in Colchester and one in Chatham, both named to commemorate the part the Soviets played in the Second World War and not changed since.
There are still two streets in the UK named after Joseph Stalin (Image: PA) That was one of the things I learned listening to Word of Mouth on Radio 4 on Sunday night.
The subject - you may have guessed - was street names.
The Open University sociolinguist Philip Seargeant was Michael Rosen's guest and what followed was a whirlwind tour that took in geography, social history and how language changes. Fast but fascinating. Word of Mouth, like Desert Island Discs, is a simple format. It's why both work so well on radio.
No mention of Gagarin Way in Lumphinnans, mind you.
A quick shout-out for A Map of the Moon (Radio 4, Sunday), which saw Siddarth Khajuria visit the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh and ask who gets to name places on the lunar surface.
Why is there a sea of tranquillity and a marsh of decay on the Moon? Blame it on a Jesuit priest called Giovanni Battista Riccioli. As one contributor noted, 'When you look at the moon now you are seeing a Catholic document frozen in the mid-1600s.'
There was, it should be noted, a chilly realpolitik about the discussions of who owns space now. 'We started the project thinking it would be about poetic imagination,' producer Eleanor McDowall told me, 'and ended it feeling like we'd made a horror movie.'
Even so, this had a lunar glitter to it, and among all the scientists and lawyers, Khajuria's son's contributions may have been the best thing about it.
Listen Out For: Conversations From a Long Marriage, Radio 4, Monday, 2.15pm
Given its starry cast (Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam) author Jan Etherington's CV and the comic durability of every episode, you might have thought the BBC might have considered Conversations From a Long Marriage for a TV transfer. As it is, it remains a reliable radio pleasure. Oh, and Irish comedian Mary Bourke has a new comedy series about being a carer starting on Radio 4 earlier in the afternoon.

The actress playing her, Kitty Castledine, has confessed huge storylines are on the way, hinting the soap was about to get "better and better". With that, her co-star Jacqueline Jossa hinted Kitty's character Penny would be caught up in a love triangle. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror at the British Soap Awards, Kitty addressed whether Penny and Harry Mitchell would give romance another go. But amid another character possibly also getting involved, it seems a triangle is on the cards. But when asked if romance could be on the cards, Kitty told us: "It's EastEnders so probably!" We also got Kitty's take on Nicola Mitchell amid her villainous ways. But the actress isn't put off from having Penny go head-to-head in scenes with Harry's mother, after recent drama in Walford. In fact, Kitty confessed that while it might not be the best idea for Penny to dabble with the Mitchells, she thinks conflict between the women would be "great". Jacqueline confessed she'd love to see Penny in with the family, battling with Nicola over Harry - while it wouldn't exactly end well given what happened to Harry's ex Shireen. Kitty told us of wanting to work more with Nicola actress Laura Doddington: "Scenes with Nicola could be great. The thing is, they butt heads because they are quite similar. They've got similar attitudes." Ready for the action, Jacqueline added: "I think we would want to see it. I'd wanna see it." Jacqueline told us: "I've heard some rumbles. I heard Kate Oates' source say maybe there are gonna be some returns and for me that excites me, whoever it is." While she did not give away who was coming back, she seemed to give away it's more than one character. The actress also hinted there were massive plots on the way, teasing where the show will be at in six months time. She teased: "I'm a massive fan of the show. I am so excited for [what's happening], cut to 6 months time, where the show will be [in six months time]. It excites me. You don't know but we know, it's very exciting."

Zack Hudson to become a dad again? EastEnders fans predict new twist after Lauren Branning fling
EastEnders fans are convinced that Zack Hudson and Lauren Branning will fall pregnant after they shared a passionate night together in the BBC soap EastEnders has unveiled another unexpected turn of events for Zack Hudson (James Farrar) as he spent the night with Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), betraying her fiancé Peter Beale (Thomas Law). Just last week, Zack narrowly escaped a horrifying car crash after threatening to abduct Barney Mitchell (Lewis Bridgeman) upon discovering that he is the teenager's biological father. After Teddy's (Roland Manookian) car plunged into a lake, Zack was feared dead but had actually managed to evade the Mitchell family as he feared for his life. Barney was also informed about his true parentage after Zack persuaded him to leave the Square. Zack is also the father to baby Peach, who was tragically stillborn, and his young daughter Dolly, but viewers speculate that he might be on the verge of becoming a father for the fourth time. Elsewhere in the Square, Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) was harshly confronted by her fiancé Peter Beale's (Thomas Law) anger over their son Jimmy Beale's severe sight impairment diagnosis, blaming Lauren's drug use during pregnancy. After a distressing confrontation with Peter, Lauren decided to break her sobriety by having a drink at the Queen Vic - but was turned away by fellow alcoholic Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), reports Belfast Live. Instead, she headed to Harry's Barn where she demanded a drink but was denied by Gina Knight (Francesca Henry). She then became irate before Zack arrived and convinced her to leave. Lauren, still intent on drinking, was at Zack's flat when he encouraged her to put the bottle down and engage in conversation instead. As she opened up about her troubles with Peter, Zack disclosed his own challenges with Barney, both feeling they hadn't lived up to their parental aspirations. The atmosphere shifted when Zack remarked on how fortunate Lauren's family was to have her, leading them to seek solace in each other's arms and culminating in a fervent kiss. On the following Tuesday (June 3), Lauren left Zack's residence and made her way to the café to confront Peter and Jimmy. Peter, however, hesitated to involve Lauren with their child after she had been out for the entire night. Towards the episode's conclusion, after attending an appointment at a private hospital, Peter ended things with Lauren, pointing the finger at her for Jimmy's ailment and threatening to take their two sons from her. Yet, there may be more drama unfolding as aficionados of EastEnders are now speculating that Lauren and Zack's heated encounter might lead to an unexpected pregnancy. A viewer speculated on X, posting: "And it was set up so that Lauren and Zack would sleep together baby no I've lost count #EastEnders." Another tersely commented: "Baby no 4 or something #EastEnders", while someone else added: "Pregnant by the end of the week #EastEnders." One fan ventured a guess, saying: "Lauren is gonna get pregnant by accident again with Zack #EastEnders".

Former BBC studios where EastEnders was filmed riddled with asbestos
A crumbling production complex where EastEnders and other iconic BBC TV shows have been filmed has been found to be riddled with asbestos. A pre-demolition survey of BBC Elstree Centre — sold to investment giant AXA IM Alts — shows that the substance is present across the buildings. Asbestos material was found in studios, a restaurant, the Central Technical Area, Hart House, the historic Fairbanks, a maintenance building and Neptune House, where Holby City was filmed. The new owners commissioned the survey as they turn the world-famous site in Borehamwood, north west London, into a film-making complex meeting modern standards. At the Art Deco-style studios where EastEnders, Children in Need and the BBC's General Election coverage have been filmed, the material was found in more than 150 different places. One sample was taken from insulation within a wall void and given a high priority classification. The inspectors found that the material was likely to be 'easily disturbed' and flagged it as 'remove.' Another sample taken from a restaurant block was classed as 'high priority'. However the material, used for thermal insulation, was judged 'usually inaccessible or unlikely to be disturbed.' Another sample was taken from stairs on the ground floor of studios M and C, according to the document released this week. The presence of the material was judged 'low risk' but Asbestos Consultants Europe Ltd recommended it be removed. AXA IM Alts said in January 2024 that it had exchanged contracts with the BBC for the 16-acre campus, with the deal due to be completed early this year. EastEnders will remain in an already modernised part of the site under a deal between the old and new owners to lease back part of the studio campus over the next 25 years. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The investment company has said in a planning application that 'the existing premises are no longer fit for purpose' and the redevelopment 'will boost the Elstree film industry.' The buyers, who are working with Oxygen Studios on the plans, intend to create a major new film and TV production complex with modern day requirements able to attract large-scale productions. The new development has been named Fairbanks Studios in tribute to actor Douglas Fairbanks, who leased studios on the site in 1952. The report was carried out to protect workers and others from 'asbestos containing materials' which might be unknowingly disturbed during demolition work. A spokesperson for AXA IM Alts said: 'We are fully aware of the presence of asbestos on the site which is common in old buildings and those that have been added to during their lifespan. More Trending 'These buildings are not currently in use and have not been occupied since we acquired them. 'Our development plans to transform the site into a fit for purpose, modern media campus already account for the safe removal of any asbestos using experts in this field and according to current regulations.'
