Motormouth: Cars can ‘read,' but sometimes not very well
Q: In response to a recent question, you indicated that automobile displays of speed limits are GPS mediated. While that may be true, an SUV we had would consistently read an exit ramp speed sign on Minnesota Route 62 at 169 mph. Even more interesting, the car would decelerate as we passed a County 50 road sign.
P.H., Edina, Minnesota
A: Yeah, some vehicles mistake route numbers for speed limit numbers. Like me, they may be a bit numerically dyslexic. Or, perhaps, a remedial reading class is in order. Thanks for the chuckle.
Q: I recently took my 2018 Buick Encore with 44,000 miles in for an oil change at an all-purpose auto repair facility. The service manager advised (and showed me) that my coolant level had dropped about 2 inches below the fill indicator line on the reservoir, and that as a result, I should get a complete cooling system flush. He explained that there might be acidity in the coolant, which could ultimately corrode internal engine parts. My owner's manual recommended this service at 100,000 miles.
D.B., Winfield, Illinois
A: I would top off the coolant with some premixed stuff. Then I would check the coolant reservoir regularly. The level is usually higher after running the engine due to expansion. The next morning, it will be lower as the coolant is sucked back into the cold engine. If you keep adding coolant, have the cooling system checked out. The service manager is right that worn out coolant can lead to internal engine problems, especially the water pump.
Q: I bought a 2024 Ford Maverick hybrid truck in July 2024. It has 3,000 miles on it so far and I was wondering when it should have its first oil change. Since the engine is running on the battery part time, how do you figure the miles it has actually driven in a year? The owner's manual doesn't say anything about it. I hope you can answer me on this.
R.D., Yorkville, Illinois
A: It is often hard to give up control and allow the vehicle's oil life monitor to let you know when it's time to change the oil. But that is what you should do.
Q: I own a 2021 BMW 430xi. It has almost 8,000 miles on it. Several months ago, the warning sign came up and it indicated my oil needs to be changed. My husband insists it does not. I had it changed about two years ago, before the warranty expired. When I contacted the dealer about it, they said the oil is "old" so, yes, it needs to be changed. My husband insists it does not. Of course, the warning sign appears every time I drive, which annoys me and worries me that I am causing harm to the engine due to my husband's stubbornness. Who is right here?
D.I., Dyer, Indiana
A: BMW uses a condition-based service system; it monitors the condition of the oil. The CBS system tracks your oil's life based on mileage, the amount of fuel consumed and an oil quality sensor in the oil pan. Trust it when it tells you to change the oil.
Q: I have a 2018 Subaru Outback with 112,000 miles on it. I take very good care of this car and faithfully follow the manufacturer's maintenance recommendations. The dealer tells me that I need to replace the timing chain at 120,000 miles. Other sources inform me that I never need to replace the timing chain. What's your thought about this?
C.H., Cologne, Minnesota
A: The timing chains on the FB25 engines are maintenance-free.

How to watch 2025 IMSA Laguna Seca on NBC, Peacock: Streaming info, start times and daily schedules
Bobby Rahal is getting using to his BMW 8 Hybrid V8 cars being at the forefront of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races this season. So it's fitting the U.S. auto racing legend will kick things off for the Monterey SportsCar Championship on Sunday, May 11. Advertisement Rahal will be the grand marshal for the fourth round of the IMSA season, giving the command to start engines for two-hour, 40-minute race (3 p.m. ET, NBC and Peacock) around the historic road course on the Montnerey Peninsula. "It's a great honor and privilege to be the grand marshal at obviously what is one of my favorite tracks," said Rahal, who made his Laguna Seca debut in 1976 with a Formula Atlantic race. "There's been a lot of success here, both as a driver and as an owner. It's a real thrill to have part of the racetrack named after you. Going out to Laguna, one of the crown jewels really of American road racing circuits, it was a thrill then, and it's a thrill even today." IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship The straightaway at Laguna Seca leading to its famous Corkscrew turn was renamed more than a decade ago in honor of Rahal, who will be at the track on multiple race weekends in 2025 with his IndyCar and IMSA teams. Advertisement It's been a swift start for the No. 24 BMW M Team RLL M Hybrid V8, which has won the Grand Touring Prototype pole position in three consectuive races with driver Dries Vanthoor to start the 2025 season. After lagging through the first two years of IMSA's revamped premier hybirid prototype category, Rahal's cars have improved in a critical season. But some driver, team and tactical errors have contributed to an absence from vcitory lane as the Porsche Penske Motorsport No. 7 963 has swept the first three races. "Unfortunately, we haven't been able quite put it all together," said Rahal, who hinted the BMW teams have tweaked their pit stops for Laguna Seca. "Come race day, we've had on-track, but lapped traffic at Daytona and Sebring hurt our chances at the end of the race. Looking at Long Beach, we got held up in the pits a little bit and that's all it took, I'm afraid. IMSA Long Beach results, points: Nasr, Tandy stay perfect for Porsche Penske in 2025 season Advertisement The No. 7 963 has won the first three IMSA races this year. "So, we've got to hopefully complete the job this time around. We were pretty quick there last year, so we have a reasonable chance. ... We've learned more about the car this year. The Laguna track, especially since they repaved it (in 2023), that's kind of come into our wheelhouse a bit." There is a sense of urgency for Rahal, whose sports car teams have been racing BMWs in GT and prototype classes since 2008. It's a contract year for RLL with the German manufacturer, and multiple outlets have reported that BMW has been considering options with other teams for 2026. "I don't want to get into the specifics of that, but we're obviously hoping to continue this long relationship that we've had with BMW that's dated back to 2008," Rahal said. "I know you see some of these articles and a lot of guessing and a lot of speculation, but there's three quarters of the season left. For us and BMW Motorsport, it's the same thing. Everybody's just really focused on this coming race and the race after that and after that and after that. Auto Racing: Rolex 24 At Daytona What's next for Felipe Nasr after second Daytona dandy? Le Mans awaits ... and maybe more Advertisement With a win in France, the Porsche Penske Motorsport star could earn history and a career springboard. "We go win some races, and that solves a lot of problems. So that's what we're intending to do." But the competition is very stiff in IMSA's top class, which will feature 11 entries and five manufacturers at Laguna Seca. Acura, Cadillac and Aston Martin will be battling BMW to detrhone the unbeaten Porsche. "It speaks volumes about IMSA the number of manufacturers that are involved in all classes," Rahal said. "It's phenomenal how many of all types are involved in in sports car racing and IMSA today compared to years ago. And the complexity of these cars is, in some respects, they may be more complex than a Formula 1 car. It's just at a different level. Advertisement "I think the GTP category but IMSA as a whole is just in a phenomenal place right now, and we haven't seen anything like this maybe ever." 2026 BMW M3 Pricing Leaked; Up $1700 from Last Year
The 2026 BMW M3 will be considerably more expensive than the 2025 model (pictured above), with the standard model creeping ever closer to $80,000. A leaked internal memo shows price increases of $1700 across the board, moving the M3 to $79,575, the Competition to $83,775, and the Competition xDrive to $88,875. Car and Driver reached out to BMW to confirm the authenticity of the document and will update this story when we hear back. The floor for BMW M3 ownership is rising once again. An internal memo from BMW leaked to the forum Bimmerpost, and first reported by Motor1, reveals that the 2026 M3 price is jumping $1700 from last year's car. BMW Unfortunately, the price hike isn't just for the standard M3, at hits evenly across the board. The increase moves the standard M3 up to $79,575, the rear-drive Competition up to $83,775, and the AWD Competition xDrive up to $88,875. The actual model offerings from BMW continue unchanged. While it's the least powerful, the base M3 remains the only model available with a three-pedal setup—and still sends a healthy 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. The Competition models come in standard rear-drive, but the optional AWD xDrive setup is back. Competition models spit out 503 horses and 479 pound-feet of torque, though the downside of the more powerful models is that they're only offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to the memo, production of the 2026 model is scheduled to start in July, and the increased pricing has already gone into effect for cars ordered now. Car and Driver reached out to BMW to confirm the veracity of the document and will update this story when we hear back.
