Lakers Expected to Ignore Former All-Star Center With Luka Doncic Ties on Trade Market originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Los Angeles Lakers will attempt to acquire a center this offseason after trading Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in the blockbuster Luka Doncic deal in February.

The Lakers, who lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 playoffs in five games, played without a traditional center in the second half of Game 4 and all of Game 5.
"The Lakers are absolutely committed to finding a center — the lack of a high-quality big man, along with injuries, was the biggest reason their playoffs ended after just five games," Dan Woike of The Athletic wrote. "Who that center is, though, is still a big question — and the long-term answer might not even be an option as of right now."

Los Angeles acquired Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets in February, but the deal was rescinded after Williams failed his physical.

The Lakers won't pursue Williams again. They also won't go after Boston Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis, who played with Doncic in Dallas.
"One thing that won't happen — another Doncic-Porzingis pairing," Woike wrote. "There's no indication that anyone wants to see that sequel."
The Celtics, who traded Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons, are expected to move Porzingis this offseason.
Porzingis will make $30.7 million next season in the final year of his contract.
The 29-year-old Porzingis averaged 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in the 2024-25 regular season and 7.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists in the 2025 playoffs for the Celtics.

The All-Star dealt with an illness and he had trouble breathing in the postseason.
It will be fascinating to see who the Lakers acquire this offseason to play the center spot and where Porzingis is playing next season.

Ohtani may return to mound Saturday in Kansas City, manager Dave Roberts keeps option open-ended

DENVER (AP) — The National League manager for the All-Star Game already has ruled out one potential pitcher — Shohei Ohtani. Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts kiddingly shut down the thought of using Ohtani in the Midsummer Classic with a quick, 'no,' before Los Angeles opened a three-game series with the last-place Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Roberts was less clear about when Ohtani might take the mound again. It could be Saturday in Kansas City against the Royals. 'We'll see. We'll see,' said Roberts, who's coaching the All-Star Game after winning last year's NL pennant — and then World Series. "I've got to make sure I keep it open-ended." In his last outing Sunday, Ohtani threw 12 of 18 pitches for strikes against Washington as he struck out two. His fastball topped out at 98.8 mph. On June 16 versus San Diego, Ohtani made his first big league pitching appearance since 2023. He threw 28 pitches over an inning, surrendering two hits and one earned run. The three-time MVP didn't pitch in 2024 while recovering from arm surgery during his first season after signing a $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dofgers. As a designated hitter, Ohtani led the NL in Phase 1 of fan voting through Monday for the All-Star Game on July 15 in Atlanta. He began the night hitting .291 with 26 homers and 49 RBIs. 'That's great. The fans love him,' Roberts said. 'He's the best player, and it's going to be exciting for the fans to watch him in Atlanta.' Any chance Ohtani participates in the Home Run Derby? 'That is a question for Shohei,' Roberts said. 'I'm staying out of that.' Any chance he hits leadoff? 'Yes,' Roberts said. Notes: Righty Tyler Glasnow (shoulder) threw two scoreless innings Sunday for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He walked three and struck out one. 'I think he came out of it fine,' Roberts said. 'For the fact that it was his first (rehab appearance), we feel really good about it. ... I think overall, in totality, we're in a good spot.' ... Righty Luis García (right adductor strain) traveled to Denver. 'Not sure when his activation will be but you're looking, obviously, in the next few days,' Roberts said. 'It's a good possibility.' __

Kyrie Irving contract: Mavericks star opts out, plans to sign new deal, per report

All-Star guard Kyrie Irving opted out of the final year of his contract with the Dallas Mavericks for the 2025-26 season and plans to sign a three-year, $119 million deal with the Mavs, according to ESPN. Irving, 33, had one season and $42.9 million left on his three-year, $120 million deal but decided to seek a longer contract. He underwent surgery on March 26 for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee – an injury sustained against the Sacramento Kings – and will miss a significant portion of next season. As the Mavericks try to maintain roster flexibility under the salary cap, they plan to sign Irving to a longer deal but at an amount closer to $40 million per season. Irving opting out and planning to sign at a lower number should give the Mavs access to a $5.7 million mid-level exception for a roster addition, according to ESPN front-office insider Bobby Marks. Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.3 steals and shot 47.3% from the field, 40.1% on 3-pointers and 91.6% from the free throw line this season. He made the All-Star team for the ninth time in 2025. The Mavericks are expected to take Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the draft on Wednesday, June 25, assembling a team that features Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, Klay Thompson, Max Christie, Irving and Flagg. Dallas lost to Boston in the 2024 NBA Finals and missed the playoffs this season. The Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers at the trade deadline, a move that didn't sit well with Mavs fans. However, the Mavs won the draft lottery with 1.8% odds and rekindled their championship aspirations. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. Kyrie Irving Will Reportedly Make 3-Year, $119 Million Commitment to Mavs

All-Star guard Kyrie Irving has declined his $43 million player option with the Mavericks and will instead sign a three-year, $119 million contract to stay in Dallas, according to a report from ESPN on Tuesday. Irving, 33, is expected to miss the entirety of the 2025-26 NBA regular season after suffering a season-ending ACL injury in March. Irving averaged 24.7 points per game last season while shooting 40.1% from the 3-point line. The Mavericks, owners of the No. 1 pick in this year's NBA Draft, finished the 2024-25 season as the No. 10 seed. recommended Get more from National Basketball Association Follow your favorites to get information about games, news and more in this topic
