It was a hard-fought contest, but the Mercury ultimately secured the road win, 83-75. This was thanks in large part to another strong performance from five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who marked her return to her former stomping ground with a massive effort.
Thomas, who the Sun traded to the Mercury in the offseason, went off for 14 points, eight rebounds, 11 assists and a steal in 31 minutes of action. The three-time All-WNBA forward had played her entire 11-year career with Connecticut before the team shipped her off in February, and Thomas made sure to remind them what they were missing.

After the final buzzer, the WNBA took to social media to congratulate Thomas on her attention-grabbing performance. The league also announced her as the Top Performer of the game.

"Alyssa Thomas made her Connecticut return unforgettable.... 14 PTS, 8 REB, 11 AST in the Mercury's 83-75 victory!" the league posted on Instagram.

Thomas has been a force for the Mercury in her first season with her new team. In eight games played thus far, the 33-year-old has put up averages of 14.4 points on 52.2% shooting, 6.8 rebounds, 9.3 assists and 1.8 steals per contest.
It wasn't just Thomas who balled out against the Sun on Wednesday, though. She also got a lot of help from the likes of Satou Sabally (12 points, 15 rebounds), Kahleah Copper (13 points) and Alexa Held off the bench (14 points), to name a few.

With the win, Phoenix has improved to 9-4 on the season. They currently occupy the No. 3 spot in the WNBA.

Pep Guardiola hints at new Manchester City role for Phil Foden in 2025/26 season

Phil Foden could be set to take on a new role in Manchester City's system, as hinted by head coach Pep Guardiola this week. The England international returned to action for the new 2025/26 season with a bang as he provided both a goal and an assist in Manchester City's opening victory of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Advertisement Scoring inside the opening two minutes, Foden inspired his side on to a convincing victory over Wydad AC in the group stage of the competition, before delivering the perfect corner for Jeremy Doku to volley home before the stroke of half-time. With Kevin De Bruyne departing the club and Manchester City recruiting Rayan Cherki from Lyon for the number 10 role, many have been wondering how that could impact Phil Foden's positional availability in Pep Guardiola's side. Operating through the middle alongside the aforementioned France international, Wednesday afternoon perhaps offered the first glimpse into the all-energy approach that Guardiola is attempting to implement in his forward line. And speaking to broadcasters after Manchester City's 2-0 win over Wydad AC in their opening contest of the Club World Cup, Pep Guardiola was quizzed on the importance of Foden after his match-winning performance in Philadelphia. Advertisement 'Of course he will be important [this season],' Guardiola insisted. The Catalan tactician continued, 'He plays another role, more there, we have a lot of No10s, we have to adjust many things, but step by step.' For now, it remains to be seen exactly what Pep Guardiola's preference is for the attacking midfield ranks in his side, although the remainder of the Club World Cup could offer some insight into the vision for the new season. Manchester City will next take on the United Arab Emirates' Al Ain on matchday two of the group stage, with the Middle-Eastern club falling to a tough 0-5 defeat on their own opening game of the competition at the hands of Juventus. Pep Guardiola has already stated that the clash against the side in Atlanta, Georgia at the weekend could see a heavily rotated line-up fielded, with as many as 10 new players anticipated for the contest.

Dodgers set franchise attendance record, surpassing 2 million fans in just 40 games

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers have surpassed 2 million in attendance in just 40 games this season. The defending World Series champions have had 2,026,238 through the gates so far. The team said Wednesday that it's the fastest they've reached that mark in franchise history. Last season, it took 42 games and in 2019, when the Dodgers set their all-time season attendance mark of 3,974,309, it took 43 games.

Red Sox Predicted Deal Aroldis Chapman at MLB Trade Deadline

Red Sox Predicted Deal Aroldis Chapman at MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox are now one of the hottest names in the MLB trade market after sending arguably one of the best hitters in baseball to the San Francisco Giants. By trading Rafael Devers, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer believes the team is signaling that they are also willing to sell more than Devers at the deadline. Advertisement That means a slew of players, particularly ones on short-term contracts, could be heading out the door. "The guess here is the Red Sox are in for some short-term pain, which could facilitate the availability of Walker Buehler, Aroldis Chapman and maybe even controllable types like Wilyer Abreu," Rymer said. Chapman is a prime trade piece for a team that is not expected to be in the playoff picture come October. His 1.50 ERA and fastball that has been consistently topping 100 miles per hour could bring tremendous value from contenders that are looking to make a World Series run this year. Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (44) reacts following the final out of a victory against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Nicholson-Imagn Images The only downside for prospective teams: Chapman is on a one-year deal, making him a free agent in the offseason. But the motivation is there for Boston, who Ryman believes is in a situation where the playoffs are out of the question now that Devers is gone. Advertisement That makes it even more reasonable to send Chapman to a new club. "As to their contention chances, well, it's a disaster. They subtracted their best hitter and didn't add much in the way of immediate impact, and you naturally have to wonder about whether the team will come to miss Devers' bat even if it doesn't miss his attitude," Ryman said. With plenty of time left before the deadline, the Red Sox are primed to make more trades that lean into their youth movement.
