Homeowners urged to pour washing up liquid in garden this summer
Experts believe the common household item can improve the look of your garden.
When grass is thick and green it makes gardens look healthy and well maintained. However, many gardeners complain that moss often ruins the look of their lush lawn. The silent grass killer tends to creep and makes your turf look patchy and uneven.
Many believe moss can be beneficial to the environment because it traps carbon dioxide, which provides a habitat for insects and creates shade for the soil. However, not everyone agrees with many claiming they 'detest' the squidgy green moss taking over their lawn.
Thankfully, gardening experts believe they have found a simple, cheap way to get rid of moss using a very common household item.
Instead of spending a lot of money of expensive sprays and chemicals that line the shelves in garden centres, householders should give washing-up liquid a try.
Garden experts believe it is a much better way to kill moss without chemicals, reports the Express.
According to JoesLawnCare.co.uk, dish soap can be turned into 'an awesome moss killer'.
It says: 'You can eradicate your moss problem with a two-ingredient cocktail of water and dish soap.
'Mixing 60ml of dish soap into 4-and-a-half litres of water and then filling up a hand sprayer is one of the most incredible moss killing recipes you could ever come across.
"Simply take your mixture outside and spray on any patches of moss you come across, holding your bottle just a couple of inches away as you drench the moss with your epic creation.

''How will I know it has worked?' I hear you ask. Well, over the next day or so, you'll see your moss invasion turn from a lush green colour to an orangey-brown before it totally dries up and succumbs to the surrounding grass. It's epic.
'Now, ideally, you'll want to have checked the weather first and time your homemade moss spraying session with a rain-free period of 24 hours or more, otherwise your solution will be washed away and rendered useless.
"But as long as you do that, there's no reason this won't work. Then, once your moss has turned that weird orangey-brown colour and died, simply grab your rake and remove it from your lawn.'
Shoppers were recently warned of the consequences of buying dishwasher detergent that is sold in plastic bottles. Cleaning experts said both the ingredients in washing-up liquid and the bottle it comes in are harming the environment every time you wash up.
Every time you drain your sink, you are releasing fossil fuels and chemicals, potentially putting aquatic life at risk.
Eco-friendly blogger Sustainably Lazy said dish soap has 'surfactants', which are the active ingredient which strips dirt off dishes and keeps it suspended in the water.
But, warned: "Mainstream brands use fossil fuel-derived surfactants, many of which end up in rivers and harm aquatic life."

Lidl urgently recalls breakfast staple over concerns it contains pieces of metal
Shoppers have since been urged not to consume the product. Lidl shoppers have been warned not to eat a batch of hash browns. There are fears that the breakfast favourite may contain foreign bodies, making them "unsafe to eat." The German supermarket giant has issued a recall for its popular Harvest Basket Hash Browns after it was discovered that they "may contain pieces of metal." A food alert posted to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised customers that the recall affects a 750g pack size, with the batch code 5144L and the best before date of May 24, 2027. The full risk statement posted to the FSA read: "This product may contain metal pieces which presents a choking hazard and makes it unsafe to eat." Due to the potential health risk, the supermarket has since advised customers who have bought the affected hash browns not to eat them but to return them to store where a full refund will be provided. For further information, shoppers are also being advised to contact the customer care line on or 0203 966 5566. Lidl said in its recall notice: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation." What is a food alert? Food alerts are issued by the FSA when there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, leading to it either being 'withdrawn' or 'recalled' from store shelves. In response, the food watchdog issues alerts to let consumers and local authorities know the problems associated with the affected product. There are also 'allergy' alerts when a food is found to contain missing or incorrect allergy labelling, meaning that they could pose a potential health risk to certain customers. We recently reported that Iceland had recalled its popular 4 Sub Rolls because they contained undeclared barley (gluten), with the best before date June 2, 2025 affected. On a more serious note, we also shared with customers that Brits had been urged to "dispose of" a popular brand of American sweets after they contained ingredients that were " compliant with UK laws". The FSA issued an urgent 'Food Alert For Action' that urged UK retailers to stop selling four types of Jolly Rancher confectionary products as they contained two mineral oils, with one being linked to an increase in cancer. All batch codes and dates of each bag of sweets were affected as they include Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons, (MOAH), and Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons, (MOSH), both which are not allowed in the UK. The Hershey Company, owner of Jolly Rancher, is said to have be working closely with the food watchdog to remove non-compliant and unsafe products from the UK market since 2024. While the company made the decision not to supply the UK market going forward, its products are still imported to the country, which is why the FSA has urged enforcing authorities to take action.

Air India family selfie moments before tragic plane crash
A heartbreaking picture has emerged of a family sharing a selfie on board the doomed Air India Flight 171 just minutes before it crashed. The family of five from Rajasthan included Komi Vyas and husband Prateek Joshi, both doctors, who were seen sitting on the aisle opposite their children, all with beaming smiles. As the Mirror reports, Joshi had moved to London a few years ago and was due to bring his family to join with him in the UK capital. But just a few minutes later, the plane they were on would crash in a residential area of Ahmedabad, killing 241 on board, with only one reported survivor - man thought to be a British national. A spokesperson for Pacific Hospital where Komi worked said: "Komi had quit her job recently to join her husband in London." Neighbour's told the network that Joshi's dad is a well-respected radiologist in the city. "They left for Amedabad yesterday to take the flight to London," Joshi's cousin Nayan said. "Prateek had come here just two days ago to take his wife and children with him. Several other members of both families went to see them off." Vyas' brother told NDTV the couple had been married for 10 years. The Air India flight had been bound for London Gatwick when disaster struck on Thursday. Of the 242 people on board the plane, 53 were said to be British and 11 of the passengers were children. Officials have recovered 200 bodies so far. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Harrowing images from the disaster showed the plane flying low over several buildings before it crashed. Indian officials have since launched an investigation into the crash. Captain Saurabh Bhatnagar, a former senior pilot, told NDTV: "The take-off was perfect and just, I believe, short of taking the gear up, the aircraft started descending, which can happen only in case the engine loses power or the aircraft stops developing lift. Obviously, the investigation will reveal the exact reason." So far British national Vishwash Kumar Rames, 40, is believed to be the only survivor of the disaster. Speaking in Hindi, he said: "I just got out of the plane, it exploded." stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. "In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected."
