Trial run begins at Kunnukuzhy abattoir, commissioning likely in first week of July
Thiruvananthapuram: After months of anticipation and delays, the trial run of the modern abattoir at Kunnukuzhy officially began on Monday. As much as 300kg of meat was used as part of the trial run. While the slaughterhouse is in operation mode, the rendering plant, responsible for converting by-products into biogas and managing waste, still awaits its dry run. According to the corporation, commissioning of the full facility was expected by the first week of July. Corporation secretary Jahamgeer S said that while the main facility's dry run was completed, the dry run of the rendering plant needs to be done this month itself. "We expect the commissioning of the abattoir by July first week if everything goes well," he said. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 10 crore by Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Ltd, the Kunnukuzhy complex is touted as one of the state's most advanced slaughterhouses. Its features include a biofilter system, an effluent treatment plant with 50 KLD capacity and refrigeration units for direct meat sales. Originally scheduled to be opened in April 2022, the project faced repeated delays due to design oversights, funding holdups and regulatory approvals, particularly from the Pollution Control Board. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The facility is equipped to slaughter between 50–75 large animals and 25–50 small ones per eight-hour shift, with an overall capacity to process 120 animals simultaneously. It includes livestock holding pens capable of sheltering up to 75 animals alongside emergency diesel backup, water storage and chilling rooms. A key sustainability measure is the integrated biogas plant, which could process up to 2,000 kg of waste daily. Additionally, the rendering unit is designed with odour-control systems to handle blood and offal, while waste sludge from the ETP is processed into manure or fish feed for sale. To manage upkeep, the corporation has floated an e-tender seeking experienced private operators. The partnership aims to streamline operations, with successful bidders expected to manage the facility under a 10-year contract, set to be awarded soon. The civic body has also pledged to clamp down on illegal slaughtering in city limits by registering butchers to use the new facility. Monitoring agencies note the rendering plant was delayed because of machinery bills pending approval by the Suchitwa Mission.

Release Nirav-linked properties worth over 60cr to PNB consortium: Court
Mumbai: In a significant development in the Nirav Modi money laundering case, a special judge ordered the release of properties worth over Rs 60 crore, previously attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), to Punjab National Bank (PNB) and its consortium. The order pertains to properties linked to Nirav Modi and his sister, Purvi Modi. The properties in question include valuables such as jewellery, coins, watches and cash found at Nirav Modi's Worli flat valued at Rs 40 crore, and Purvi Modi's flat at Bhulabhai Desai Road, valued at Rs 19.5 crore. The plea, filed by PNB in its individual capacity and as the lead bank for the PNB Consortium and authorised representative for the UBI Consortium, sought the exemption of specific properties from confiscation. PNB and its consortiums have cumulatively suffered a loss exceeding Rs 8,526.2 crore due to the alleged fraud committed by Nirav Modi and his associates, an amount significantly higher than the approximately Rs 2,324.97 crore in properties attached by the ED.
