Man sentenced to jail for seven years for attack on civic official in 2021
Four years after an assistant municipal commissioner of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) was attacked with a knife during an anti-encroachment drive, causing her to lose three fingers, the attacker was sentenced to seven years in jail by a court in Thane.
The court found Amarjitsingh Yadav, a hawker, guilty under sections including attempt to murder, assault or use of criminal force against a public servant and causing grievous hurt of the Indian Penal Code.
On August 30, 2021, around 6.30pm, an anti-encroachment drive was underway at Kasarvadavali vegetable market in Thane. Assistant municipal commissioner Kalpita Pimple and security personnel accompanying her, Somnath Palve, were attacked by Yadav with a knife. While Pimple's three fingers had to be amputated due to the attack, Palve too suffered injuries on his finger.
Special public prosecutor Shishir Hiray said the court had relied on eyewitnesses, the attack weapon and other evidence to prove the case against Yadav. The prosecution also examined medical experts, who deposed about the injuries caused to the two victims. Pimple and Palve also deposed before the court. Hiray said the injuries on their fingers were due to their attempt at stopping the attack. He had submitted before the court that the attack would have been fatal otherwise.
Yadav had claimed innocence stating he was falsely implicated. The detailed order is yet to be made available.
Additional sessions judge A S Bhagwat, while convicting Yadav, also directed him to pay a fine of Rs 20,500. It directed that it be paid equally to the two victims, Pimple and Palve.

In a major financial fraud case involving forged bank guarantees worth Rs 183.21 crore, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two individuals, including a Senior Manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB), in connection with a scam involving an Indore-based company and the Madhya Pradesh Jal Nigam Limited (MPJNL).According to CBI, the Indore-based firm had secured three large irrigation projects worth Rs 974 crore in 2023 from MPJNL by submitting eight fake bank guarantees, purportedly issued by PNB. The MPJNL initially received forged confirmation emails that appeared to be from the official domain of PNB. These fraudulent communications falsely confirmed the authenticity of the bank guarantees, which subsequently led to MPJNL approving the a crackdown on June 19 and 20, the CBI conducted searches at 23 locations across five states, including New Delhi, West Bengal, Gujarat, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh, following directives of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The operation resulted in the arrest of two individuals from Kolkata, including a serving senior manager of Punjab National Bank. Both the accused were presented before a local court in Kolkata and have been granted transit remand. Preliminary findings suggest that a well-organised Kolkata-based syndicate has been actively engaged in fabricating and distributing fake bank guarantees to win lucrative government contracts across multiple sources confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing in the case. MP HC commutes death sentence of tribal youth in child rape case, citing lack of 'brutality', mitigating background
BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has commuted the death sentence of a 20-year-old tribal man convicted of raping and attempting to kill a four-year-old girl, reducing his punishment to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment. The decision was delivered by a division bench comprising Justices Vivek Agarwal and Devnarayan Mishra, who observed that while the act was undeniably brutal, it did not meet the threshold of "brutality" required for the death penalty under the "rarest of rare" doctrine. The case involved the convict, a 20-year-old from a Scheduled Tribe, who was found guilty by a trial court under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act), and sentenced to death. According to the prosecution, the convict entered the complainant's hut under the pretext of requesting a cot to sleep on, and later abducted and raped the minor victim from a nearby house during the night. He then left her in an unconscious state in a mango orchard, believing her to be dead. The High Court, while acknowledging the horrifying nature of the crime, noted: 'No doubt that appellant's act was brutal as he has committed rape upon the victim of four years and three months of age and after committing rape also throttled her treating her dead and thrown the victim in such a place where she could not be searched and left the spot but it is also clear that he has not committed brutality,' distinguishing between barbaric acts and acts of extreme cruelty or depravity. The bench considered several mitigating factors in its decision. The convict was described as an uneducated youth from a tribal community, whose parents never tried to educate or properly care for him. He left his home at an early age and was working in a roadside eatery to earn a living. There was no evidence of prior criminal conduct, and the court found no adverse reports regarding his behaviour. The bench further noted that the environment in which the convict grew up did not provide him with the proper atmosphere to develop. The High Court affirmed the conviction under Sections 363, 450, 307, and 201 of the IPC, but commuted the death penalty under Section 6 of the POCSO Act to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 10,000. In default of payment, the convict will serve an additional year of rigorous imprisonment. The decision reflects the court's view that, despite the gravity of the offence and the young age of the victim, the circumstances of the convict's background and the absence of extreme brutality did not justify the death penalty in this case.

After Ahmedabad crash, Air India faces slew of passenger complaints on social media
New Delhi: Just a week after the devastating crash of Air India flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London, the national carrier is now facing intense backlash from passengers over poor service, damaged baggage, mishandled refunds, and alleged harassment, all of which are surfacing on social media platform X. On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, claiming 275 lives that included 241 passengers and crew and 34 people on the ground, as the plane had crashed into a hostel of a medical college. The crash, one of the worst in Indian aviation history, has put the airline under a harsh spotlight. And now, passengers are voicing their long-standing frustrations, painting a troubling picture of Air India's service standards. A user named Qamar Saquib posted that on June 18, while travelling from Patna to Jeddah via Delhi on Air India flights AI-2634 and AI-991, he discovered that his gold (5.5 grams) was missing from his luggage upon arrival in Jeddah. 'I filed a complaint immediately at the Jeddah airport,' he wrote, tagging the airline for accountability. Jasmeet Singh raised a separate issue, accusing Air India of not honouring a refund promise made by airport staff. 'It's a clear case of cheating. The staff was insensitive to my mother, a senior citizen, who was travelling with my sisters,' he wrote. In another disturbing post, a user named Sakina alleged that Air India fraudulently cancelled her grandparents' tickets from Mumbai to Bengaluru, both of whom are heart patients. 'On June 9, I received an email saying the tickets for June 26 had been cancelled through the website — something I never did,' she claimed. The refund provided was a mere Rs 1,400 for tickets worth Rs 15,000, and customer service has reportedly gone silent. 'This is a scam,' she wrote, calling the act 'a breach of security' and 'fraudulent.' Yash, another flyer, said he was mentally and physically harassed when he was forced to switch seats multiple times on flight AI-558, despite pre-booking seat 12D. 'I have back problems and was shifted from 12D to 16C, and then to 29D,' he said. Passenger Rajneesh Khullar, tagging the Ministry of Civil Aviation and DGCA, expressed frustration over broken baggage and zero response from Air India. 'We got our bags after a week. One was broken. I have sent over two dozen emails and filed a claim (Case #23700866), but there has been no response,' he wrote. Parul Kumar, who flew on AI-309, called out the airline for 'super dirty' toilets, non-functional screens, and unresponsive attendants, despite paying AUD 1,500 for the tickets. 'Very pathetic service,' she said bluntly. Another flyer, who goes by AR, shared a video from flight AI-810 and requested Air India to change the 'dirty and worn-out tapestry' on its aircraft 'for the sake of Tata Group's reputation and in memory of late Shri Ratan Tata.' These complaints are now adding to the growing pressure on Air India, which is already under scrutiny after the deadly June 12 crash. The national carrier, which was expected to undergo a revival under the Tata Group's ownership, is now facing renewed criticism not only for technical and safety lapses but also for widespread service failures.
