Hey, folks! Today's NYT Strands hints, spangram and answers for Tuesday, June 17 are coming right up.
The New York Times' Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It's available on the NYT website and in the NYT Games app alongside the likes of Wordle and Connections (which we also cover in daily guides at Forbes Gaming).
There's a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you'll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You'll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links at least two sides of the board, but it may not start or end there. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it's possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you're playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.
If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you'll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.
Be warned: You'll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you'll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes.
Scroll slowly! Just after the hint for today's Strands puzzle, I'll reveal what the answer words are.

From the hint, I thought this would have something to do with clothing design (thanks, Project Runway). While the concept was perhaps more straightforward than that, finding the right words was not. I needed hints for FINAGLE, CONTRIVE and FINESSE before seeing the spangram
I used three hints and the spangram was the fourth theme word I found.
See you tomorrow for more Strands fun!

The Clue: This Wordle starts with the same letter as yesterday's Wordle. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Okay, spoilers below! The answer is coming! . . . Today's Wordle Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here. STALE was an excellent opening guess, leaving me with one green box and just 60 remaining words. Of course, I didn't know how close I'd come on my first guess, and unfortunately I got very unlucky here on out. CHOIR only cut that number to 17 and left me with one more yellow box. In an attempt to rustle up another vowel, GUARD only cut my solutions down to five and gave me no new boxes at all. I guessed PRAWN because I knew both PRANK and BRAWN were possibilities, but I guess I should have gone with PRANK because that was the Wordle. Oh well. Today's Wordle Bot I get -1 for guessing in five and -1 for losing to the Bot. The Bot gets 0 for guessing in four and +1 for beating me. This narrows our June totals to: Erik: 11 points Wordle Bot: 8 points The word prank likely comes from Middle English pranken, meaning "to show off" or "to adorn oneself." It may be of Low German origin, related to prunken ('to strut, show off'). The modern sense of "a mischievous trick" emerged in the 16th–17th century, evolving from the idea of showy or playful behavior. Fashion Mourns the Loss of Afa Ah Loo, the Samoan Designer Killed at a 'No Kings' March
On Saturday, Samoan fashion designer Afa Ah Loo—who was known for his distinctive and vibrant culture-based designs—was killed during what was supposed to be a peaceful 'No Kings' march in Salt Lake City, Utah. The designer was part of a crowd of over 10,000 people in Salt Lake City marching in solidarity with the 'No Kings' protest—a nation-wide movement that occurred in several major cities on Saturday, held in opposition the immigration policies put in place by President Donald J. Trump and his current administration. According to reports, Loo was the victim of a shooting, and was deemed an 'innocent bystander.' (An investigation from the Salt Lake City Police Department report that he was struck by an alleged peacekeeper, and was 'not the intended target.') Born and raised in Samoa, Loo learned how to sew from his mother, and went on to design unique fashions through his namesake label that highlighted Pacific Islander culture. In 2019, he was a contestant on season 17 of Project Runway, and recently focused on offering community sewing workshops in his home state of Utah. Notably, last year, Loo created a special red carpet look for Moana star Auliʻi Cravalho; It consisted of a cape made of white Dovetail shells that was reminiscent of a Hawaiian ʻahu ʻula, a feather cloak worn by ancient Hawaiian royalty. Cravalho is among many celebrities and fashion insiders who took to social media today to mourn the designer's loss. 'There are no words to hold the grief of losing @ she wrote. 'As a Samoan fashion designer, Afa's creations are and remain thoughtful, elegant and powerful portrayals of Pacific culture. . . Your artistry will never be forgotten; and neither will your peaceful protest.' Top stylist Jessica Paster, who has styled Cravalho, commented, 'This is heartbreaking. Rest in power.' Deomcratic Utah Representatives Verona Mauga and Jacob Fitisemanu Jr., meanwhile, also shared a joint statement on his passing. 'Afa inspired us to stand up against injustice and to speak out for the voiceless, and his final steps in this life were taken in the service of others, as a call to action, as a gesture of love. ' In addition to his own design work, Loo also founded the Creative Pacific Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and fostering cultural exchange in fashion. Loo is survived by his wife, Laura, and two children. A GoFundMe has been started in their honor.

Auliʻi Cravalho Honored Afa Ah Loo After He Was Fatally Shot At Protest
Samoan fashion designer Afa Ah Loo was fatally shot at the No Kings protest in Salt Lake City, Utah over the weekend. According to NBC News, police said a man in the crowd named Arturo Gamboa held an AR-15-style rife in "a firing position," and peacekeepers of the event shot at him. One of the shots accidentally hit Afa, an innocent bystander who was transported to a hospital and tragically died. A husband and father of two, Afa was a beloved figure in the Pacific Islander community. The 39-year-old made history as the first Samoan to compete on Project Runway, and one of his pieces was displayed in Buckingham Palace for The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange. He also cofounded the Creative Pacific Foundation, a nonprofit that showcases Pacific Islander fashion and uplifts creatives and professionals. Afa's designs were beautiful and thoughtful, a celebration of Polynesian cultures. He dressed numerous celebrities over the years, from the Moana team to Dinah Jane to The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City stars. Many Pacific Islanders — including myself — dreamed of wearing one of his pieces someday. One of the celebs who recently wore his designs was Auliʻi Cravalho. In a November Instagram post, Afa wrote, "It was an absolute pleasure to dress Moana herself! Auli'i Cravalho who is the voice of Moana was dressed in a custom AFA AH LOO draped shell top and black high waisted pants! It was a dream come true to dress her and be able to witness the showcase of Pacific Island excellence last night at the world premiere!" Today, the actor shared her own post remembering Afa. "There are no words to hold the grief of losing @ she wrote. "As a Samoan fashion designer, Afa's creations are and remain thoughtful, elegant and powerful portrayals of Pacific culture. I am still amazed to have worn his custom designs for the most significant event of my career; the world premiere of Moana 2." "Your artistry will never be forgotten; and neither will your peaceful protest. My deepest condolences, sympathies and Aloha to his family, and all who felt his impact. May you rest peacefully with our Father, Afa. Auwe. Auwe. Auwe," she concluded. On social media, his recent posts have seen an outpouring of love from the community. Rest in love, Afa.
