Wiltshire in Pictures: A Royal visit to the county
It's been a busy week in Wiltshire including a royal visit, with the Royal Regiment of Artillery playing host to King Charles at its headquarters in Larkhill on Friday.
There have been new beginnings in Salisbury, with a diesel locomotive being renamed in honour of the Royal Artillery and the first Canon Historian being installed at the cathedral.
A new exhibition has opened at Lacock Abbey, a legal graffiti wall has been praised in Melksham and some rare nocturnal visitors have been spotted in a little-known woodland.
Here is our weekly round-up showing life across the county this week.
Royal visit: King Charles met soldiers and their families when he visited the Royal Regiment of Artillery HQ in Larkhill.
All dressed up: Historian Tom Holland has become the first Canon Historian in an English cathedral He was installed in an Evensong service at Salisbury Cathedral on Monday, alongside Judith Davey Cole, Nigel Salisbury and Lucinda Herklots.
Passionate: Hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday to lobby Swindon Borough Council and speak up for keeping the former golf course in Highworth as a green space rather than letting it be developed.
A rare sight: One of England's rarest species, the Pine Marten, has been discovered living in a protected woodland. The animal was captured by a camera trap in RSPB Franchises Wood, on the Wiltshire-Hampshire border. The wood has been dubbed "the secret forest" due to its location and the fact it is not open to visitors.
On show: Lacock Abbey is playing host to an exhibition of previously unseen photographs by the acclaimed photojournalist Werner Bischof. The exhibition began on 31 May and includes images of post-war Cologne and various character studies.
Naming ceremony: A diesel locomotive has been rededicated in honour of a branch of the armed forces in a naming ceremony at Salisbury Railway station. The train, named The Royal Artilleryman, has just undergone a major overhaul and was unveiled with military personnel, Royal Artillery Association Members and an Honour Guard all in attendance.
Creative outlet: Wiltshire Council say that the legal art wall in Melksham has proved to be a real success. The scheme, set up last September, has resulted in a reduction in vandalism in the town, whilst also offering a creative outlet for local artists.
Well deserved: Members of the public have been recognised alongside police officers and staff for their bravery, courage, and dedication in the latest Wiltshire Police Force Awards ceremony. The event took place in Devizes on Wednesday, with awards being given out for public spiritedness, bravery and leadership.

Incredible efforts of punters and staff to raise cash for cancer research
A Bury pub has raised thousands for Cancer Research. The Old White Lion raised £3,800 during a recent charity fun day filled with activities. The event featured a tombola, raffle, games, and karaoke, with residents choosing to sing their favourite songs. Getting into the spirit of the day, one woman shaved her head and a man volunteered to have his chest waxed. Big comedian turns the tables on locals ahead of upcoming gig
Comedian and actor Omid Djalili has taken to social media in an attempt to find out what Swindon locals really think of their hometown. The stand-up comic is set to bring his new show, NAMASTE, to Swindon when he performs at the Wyvern Theatre on Thursday, June 26. But before he makes the trip to the town, Omid is on the hunt for the inside jokes within the Swindon community that could end up being a hit on stage. He posed the question in a community Facebook group: "What's funny about life in Swindon that only locals understand?" Responses so far may not have given the comedian much to work with on his search for material ahead of his Swindon gig, with commenters largely choosing to share their thoughts on the town centre. Prince William Says Family Can Be a "Mixed Bag" Amid Rift With Prince Harry

Before he stepped down as a senior working royal, insiders thought Prince Harry—who trained as an Army Air Corps pilot in 2009—would become the future colonel-in-chief of his former regiment. Instead, the role was given to Prince William by The King, and on June 4, the Prince of Wales made his first official visit to the regiment in Wattisham, Suffolk. During one conversation, Prince William appeared to make a rare reference to his family life amid his estrangement from brother Prince Harry. Per the Daily Mail, Prince William asked a group of soldiers, "Is the pace of life good at the moment?" After one told him it was "a mixed bag," the Prince of Wales replied, "Families okay? See you enough? Some of them might not want to see you that much. It's a mixed bag sometimes." The last time the brothers were publicly seen interacting was during a joint walkabout with Meghan Markle and Princess Kate after Queen Elizabeth died in 2022. Prince Harry's military appointments were taken away when he stepped away from royal life, making it impossible for him to be made colonel-in-chief of his former regiment. King Charles—who served in the role for more than 30 years—officially passed the title down to Prince William in May 2024. Prince William worked as a helicopter pilot for the RAF search and rescue team and East Anglian Air Ambulance before he become a senior working royal, and he wasted no time taking a wildcat helicopter up for a spin during his visit. The prince chatted about helicopters with some of the soldiers' children, like 6-year-old Archie Foster and his 8-year-old sister, Ida. "Which do you like the most?" William asked. "The apache? You like the apache? Your dad does a very important job here." As for Ida, she deemed her encounter with the future King, "amazing." "I loved it. This is going to be the best thing of my whole entire life," she said. "I'm going to write it in a book."
