Former UFC champion suspended indefinitely after losing world title
Pena has been handed an indefinite suspension by the New Jersey State Athletic Board following her defeat to Kayla Harrison at UFC 316 last weekend
Ex-UFC women's bantamweight champ Julianna Pena has been hit with an INDEFINITE suspension by the New Jersey State Athletic Board after her defeat at UFC 316.
Pena became a world champion for a second time last year after beating Raquel Pennington at UFC 307. In the first defence of her title, though, she fell short after being dominated by two-time Olympic gold medalist, Kayla Harrison. The American would go on to submit Pena in the second round last weekend.
Immediately after the loss, the 'Venezuelan Vixen' called for the winner of Harrison's potential clash with Amanda Nunes - despite her 3-3 record in her last six fights. That said, before Pena returns to the octagon, she will need clearance on several injuries as she has been handed an indefinite suspension following Saturday night's pay-per-view event, according to the New Jersey State Athletic Board.
The commission has suspended the UFC star indefinitely until she receives clearance from an orthopedist on both her left elbow and left shoulder before she can compete again. Pena quickly apologised to her fans after she failed to get the job done. "Thank you to the fans who lifted me with your love and encouragement during this fight camp," she wrote on Instagram.
"I love you all and feel so grateful for all the support and energy you guys give me. It truly means the world! I'm sorry I wasn't able to get the job done. I'm super disappointed but hats off to Kayla on her win. Time to get healed up and get ready for her next fight because I'm calling dibs on the winner!"
After clinching the women's bantamweight title, Harrison didn't hold back in her post-fight speech, saying: "I have a lot to say, thank you for my family, two beautiful children, the fans whether you love or hate me you are the lifeblood of this sport. This is for everyone who has felt hopeless or wanted to quit, this is for all the mums, especially single mums, you're not being punished, you are being positioned.
"Me and Julianna prayed for each other afterwards. Only God could get that last pound off me, you have to go to a bad place for that weight cut." But Harrison wasn't finished there; spotting Nunes in the audience, she seized the moment to issue a challenge: "I see you Amanda! Come on up, this is the next fight," she declared. "This is the greatest of all time, I have belt, she has legacy, let's put it on the table."
Nunes didn't hesitate to join Harrison in the octagon, and when UFC commentator Joe Rogan questioned if she was ready for the bout, Nunes confidently replied: "Yes definitely. We knew this was going to happen. Now, we're going to do it. I'm more than happy to come back and fight you."
After the event, Pena wasn't the only fighter to receive an indefinite suspension. UFC veteran Kelvin Gastelum also received the same suspension following his decision loss to Joe Pyfer. Gastelum must now seek clearance from a dentist for a loose right maxillary incisor. Mario Bautista, who scored a significant victory over Patchy Mix, has been suspended for just 30 days due to facial lacerations. Vicente Luque has also been given a 45-day suspension following his loss to Kevin Holland due to a scalp hematoma.

Former Rangers boss ‘close to joining Liverpool' ahead of Premier League title defence

Anfield boss Arne Slot is preparing to reshuffle his coaching staff ahead of their Premier League title defence next season. And it's being reported that ex-Gers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will replace him. The Times say van Bronckhorst is poised to become Slot's new assistant coach. Van Bronckhorst guided the Ibrox side to the Europa League final and a Scottish Cup victory in 2022. But he was sacked a few months later after a string of poor results in the Champions League and in the Scottish Premiership. The Dutchman remained out of work for a year-and-a-half before stepping back into the dugout with Turkish giants Besiktas last year. But he lasted just 20 games in charge, winning only ten and drawing four, losing six. The former Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona star was replaced by Manchester United icon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as at the Istanbul club. Van Bronckhorst remains a legend at Feyenoord, having played there in two spells and winning the Eredivisie as a manager. Slot and van Bronckhorst's stints in the dugout at Feyenoord led to similar successes. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers Van Bronckhorst won the league and two Dutch Cups over 176 games, with a win rate of 61 percent. Slot won the league once and the Dutch Cup once and amassed a win percentage of 65 percent, prior to his move to Liverpool. Van Bronckhorst, 50, was previously linked with a return to Feyenoord but they appointed Robin van Persie instead. He also turned down an approach from SC Heerenveen back in March. Liverpool are also on the verge of completing a blockbuster move for Florian Wirtz. The German superstar could be followed in the door at Anfield by PSG ace Bradley Barcola and Newcastle United talisman Alexander Isak in what would be a wild £300m summer spending spree. The Reds have already forked out £29.5m on Wirtz's Leverkusen team-mate, former Celtic defender Jeremie Frimpong. Bournemouth's 21-year-old left-back Milos Kerkez is also being eyed as a potential replacement for Scotland hero Andy Robertson. 2 Giovanni van Bronckhorst won the Scottish Cup with Rangers Credit: Getty Images - Getty Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

How Dundee United new boy Zac Sapsford fumbled Bukayo Saka jersey when his bottle crashed
Dundee United's first summer signing Zac Sapsford has revealed how he missed out on a signed Bukayo Saka jersey when his bottle crashed – literally. The Australian forward arrives at Tannadice with a hidden skill, and it caught the eye of ex-Chelsea, Manchester United and Spain superstar Juan Mata, a teammate at Western Sydney Wanderers last season. Sapsford, 22, has a talent for bottle flipping and, after showcasing the ability over lunch during an away trip, Mata challenged the youngster to land THIRTY in a row in return for a shirt of his choice. Sapsford opted for Arsenal ace Saka – and came agonisingly close. Instead, he was tasked with weeks on the coffee run. 'I'm pretty good at bottle flipping,' he told the Row Z FC podcast. 'We were at a hotel and had just finished dinner and I was doing some bottle flips. Juan said, 'wow, you are really good at that'. Then he told me that if I got 30 in a row, he'd get me whatever jersey I want. 'I said, 'make it a signed [Bukayo] Saka jersey, and I'll do it'. So, I started, and the whole team was watching. It's getting very pressurised. I had like 28 in a row and flipped it up…then it fell. 'Everyone was all around me – even the coaches – and it was not good. I was that close. 'Instead, my punishment was to get him seven coffees whenever he wanted!' Nevertheless, the tale speaks to the rapport shared by the erstwhile teammates; two men at the opposite end of their career journeys. Mata, 35, boasts a World Cup, two European Championship and a Champions League among an astonishing haul of medals and Sapsford readily admits that the mercurial midfielder is TOO GOOD to learn from. However, his influence was still tangible. 'On the pitch, there's not much to learn from Juan – because he's too good,' he continued. 'You can't really take too much from him because you look at some of the things he does and say, 'I'll never be able to do that'. 'But off the pitch, he is an amazing person and the bits of advice he gave me in different scenarios was invaluable. 'Whether it's reacting to coming off or being annoyed at being benched one week; he'd tell me how he went through those things at top-level clubs. 'Those types of things helped me through the season, and to have someone like that somewhat mentoring you was a cool thing.' Sapsford has penned a three-year deal with the Tangerines and, along with Moldova international Iurie Iuvo, represents the first pieces of Jim Goodwin's summer rebuild at Tannadice. And he told United fans what to expect. Asked what attributes he would bring to the Scottish game, Sapsford said: 'I'd say my link-up play. 'I like to drive with the ball if I get the chance; I'm really good at that. And although I'm not super tall, I like to win most of my aerial duels. Goalscoring and assists, too. I like to set players up and find the killer pass. 'I'll never stop running and I love putting all my energy out there. I'll never come off the pitch feeling like I haven't given everything.' Sapsford, who still harbours a dream of making the Australia World Cup squad next summer, added: 'What I am expecting (in Scotland) is a lot of physicality. 'I'm happy with that. I like a bit of contact in games. That's what football is for and I'm ready for anything.' You can listen to the full episode of Row Z FC here.
