Lingayat and Vokkaliga organisations to hold joint protest
A meeting of office-bearers of Rajya Vokkaligara Sangha and Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha on Friday decided to hold a joint protest against the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey (caste census) report submitted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes.
The two dominant communities are unhappy with the population data that has been collected as part of the commission's survey in 2015.
The survey report was submitted by K. Jayaprakash Hegde-led commission in 2024, but only the population figure of castes, recommendation for reclassification of castes and procedures adopted in collection of data, among others, have been released to Ministers so far.
The issue is likely to come up for discussion on May 2 when the State Cabinet will meet. The representatives of two community organisations met nearly after a decade. Mahasabha national president Shamanur Shivashankarappa was present.
According to mahasabha secretary H.M. Renuka Prasanna, while a joint protest is being planned, discussion on legal challenges that they could mount against the survey was also part of the meeting.
'Joint strategies to be adopted to oppose the survey report were discussed along with ways elected representatives could be roped in. The date of protest is yet to be decided.'

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday renewed his allegation of electoral malpractices in last November's assembly election in Maharashtra that the BJP-led alliance swept and said " match-fixing will come next in Bihar", which goes to polls later this year. "Step 1: Rig the panel for appointing the Election Commission , Step 2: Add fake voters to the roll, Step 3: Inflate voter turnout, Step 4: Target the bogus voting exactly where BJP needs to win, Step 5: Hide the evidence. It's not hard to see why the BJP was so desperate in Maharashtra," he wrote on microblogging platform X. "But rigging is like match-fixing - the side that cheats might win the game, but damages institutions and destroys public faith in the result. All concerned Indians must see the evidence. Judge for themselves. Demand answers. Because the match-fixing of Maharashtra will come to Bihar next, and then anywhere the BJP is losing. Match-fixed elections are a poison for any democracy," he said. Gandhi renewing the charges over Maharashtra election results after a pause on the front and the fact that his latest burst is mostly a summary of the old charges, have made many in the Congress wonder whether he was using it more as a caveat ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly poll, where Gandhi's new-found switch to 'social justice' plank has high-stakes. They said his article is mostly inspired by the "investigations" done by the AICC's data wing.

Tension at Durgadi Fort as rival Shiv Sena factions clash during Id-ul-Azha prayers
Tensions escalated in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday (June 7, 2025) after members of both the Eknath Shinde-led and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led factions of the Shiv Sena attempted to reach Durgadi Fort while Id-ul-Azha prayers were being offered at its foothill. According to police officials, protestors from both factions tried to ascend to the Durga temple atop the hill during the course of the Id-ul-Azha prayers being held at the base, resulting in chaos in the area. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were in effect, and several protestors were subsequently detained for violating the restrictions. Leaders from both sides, including Shinde faction functionary Ravi Patil and Uddhav faction leader Vijay Salvi, led rallies demanding that 'Durgadi Fort should be freed'. Their convoys converged at Shivaji Chowk, near the Durgadi temple, where slogans were raised by supporters of both groups. 'Police took measures to prevent protestors from both factions from reaching the fort. The protestors attempted to breach the barricades, triggering scuffles and a standoff with the police. We detained several members in preventive custody so that it does not escalate,' Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende said. Durgadi Fort has long been at the centre of a communal dispute regarding the control of a mosque located within its premises. Access to the Durga temple is typically restricted during Id-ul-Azha to facilitate prayers at the foothill. Members of the Shiv Sena have criticised the arrangement, alleging discrimination against Hindu devotees and calling for equal access to the site. The Idgah located at the fort has been under litigation since 1976, when the Majlish-e-Mushavreen Majjid Trust filed a suit seeking control. In 2024, the court ruled in favour of the State government.

Mandya (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday demanded clarity from the Karnataka government regarding its investigation into the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He also accused the Congress-led government of 'dragging in' the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the Prayagraj stampede to deflect criticism over its own failures. 'The government is making decisions every hour on the stampede issue. What will they do in the end? First, there was a judicial investigation. Now there is a CID investigation. Finally, they will get the investigation report. What is this government doing? If any decision is made, there should be clarity,' Kumaraswamy told reporters. 'The government is a complete are dragging Pahalgam and Prayagraj here for the mistakes they made. What is the connection between the Pahalgam incident and this?' he added. Earlier, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations from their posts, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede that took place near M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. Also in Bengaluru, CID officials paid a visit to KSCA office, with the state government having ordered a CID probe into the stampede case. The stampede left 11 people dead and several others injured. Communicating to KSCA on Friday night, both Shankar and Jairam wrote as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, 'Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, but owing moral responsibility, we wish to state that last night we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as secretary and treasurer of the KSCA.' The Bengaluru Police also filed a first information report (FIR) against the popular IPL franchise on Thursday. The police have said that RCB was not given permission to conduct the event at the stadium. RCB has been listed as the first accused in the FIR, along with DNA Entertainment, the franchise's event partners, and the KSCA, which is in control of the stadium. On Friday, the cops also confirmed the arrest of RCB's marketing and revenue head Nikhil Sosale, while acting on directives of newly appointed police commissioner SK Singh, who took over after his predecessor was removed by the chief minister Siddaramaiah after the incident.
