Some 150 police thrown at hunt for 'lawless thugs'
A mega police task force designed to crush criminal activities of gangs in one state has been launched after a spate of public shootings.
Taskforce Falcon in NSW will oversee and try to bring to justice alleged criminals behind public place shootings, arson attacks and kidnappings, dating back to December.
The 150-strong taskforce, including 100 detectives, will oversee and co-ordinate more than a dozen investigations.
The ninth of those shootings came on Sunday when a driver was left fighting for life after being ambushed on a busy road in western Sydney.
"We will not tolerate these lawless thugs getting out there with their vendettas against each other and putting in danger innocent victims in our community," Police Minister Yasmin Catley told reporters on Tuesday.
"Public safety is the number one priority for the NSW police force."
In a pointed message to would-be criminals, she said, "You are going to end up in a small cell for the rest of your life."
Deputy Commissioner David Hudson explained the uptick in violence was most likely related to gang turf wars over drugs spilling out on the streets.
He vowed that any criminals, whether they played a small or large role, would be on the police's radar.
"We will pursue all those involved, whether you're staging a vehicle to be used as a getaway vehicle, steering that vehicle, where you are pulling the trigger for hire, or whether you are the person who orchestrated the contract on that individual," he said.
In the latest escalation of gangland violence on Sunday, at least one person in a Mercedes fired several rounds at a Toyota HiLux turning into a busy road in Granville, hitting the driver and front-seat passenger.
The 32-year-old driver of the ute underwent surgery and remained in a critical condition, police said on Monday, but he is unlikely to survive his multiple gunshot wounds.
Video circulating online showed the front-seat passenger, a 25-year-old lawyer, bleeding on the side of the road.
He was in a stable condition in hospital.

Man arrested after allegedly escaping Brisbane correctional centre, committing crime spree
A man has been charged after allegedly committing a crime spree in Brisbane's southern suburbs while on the run from a correctional centre. Police were called to Tristania Way in Mount Gravatt East shortly after 2am Sunday after reports a stolen Mercedes Benz sedan crashed into several parked vehicles. Upon arrival, witnesses told police they saw the man flee the scene on damaged sedan was found at the scene. It will also be alleged the man had been wanted by police after absconding from the Palen Creek Low Custody Correctional Centre about 100km south of Brisbane on May 27. He has been charged with four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, three counts of enter dwelling with intent, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of robbery, one count each of receiving tainted property, fail to remain at the scene of an accident and drive with court cancelled driver's license. Police expect more charges to be laid at a later date. The man is set to appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday June 9.

A Sydney man who shot his wife and severed her spine, causing 'catastrophic injuries', will spend at least four years behind bars. Kamal El Jamal, 35, fired several shots from an illegal firearm into the ceiling of his Condell Park garage, in Sydney's southwest, as his wife, Georgina Vlahos, slept in her bed directly above on January, 12, 2023. NewsWire / Max Mason-Hubers Credit: News Corp Australia El Jamal, pleaded guilty in Downing Centre District Court in February to recklessly causing actual bodily harm and using a pistol not authorised to do so. Appearing in court for sentencing on Friday, El Jamal cried as Judge Sean Grant sentenced him to seven years in prison, with a non-parole period of four years and three months. Judge Grant said the shooting was a 'very grave example' of this type of offending, which involved 'a grave risk of death to another person'. 'The victim has no feeling below her spine … she will never walk again,' he told the court. The prosecution submitted that the victim suffered 'catastrophic injuries' and would undoubtedly require 'significance assistance in various aspects of everyday life'. However, Ms Vlahos had previously written to the court requesting that El Jamal be her caregiver and saying she had 'forgiven' him. Georgina Vlahos was told she would never walk again. It wasn't until about 30 minutes after the bullet travelled through the garage ceiling, the floorboards of the main bedroom and the mattress of the bed and hit Ms Vlahos that El Jamal called out to a neighbour for help. The shots severed Ms Vlahos's spine and caused significant damage to her liver and spleen. She suffered a devastating spinal cord injury and was told she would never walk again. At the time of the shooting, El Jamal was 'significantly affected by drugs' and 'did not intend to harm his partner or anyone else', his Legal Aid barrister Ertunc Ozen previously told the court. Court documents say Ms Vlahos told paramedics that she 'didn't remember anything' upon her arrival at Bankstown Hospital, and she 'could not feel her legs'. CCTV footage from the day of the incident shows El Jamal driving up to the ambulance bay in a Mercedes-Benz before stopping and getting out of the vehicle. He then approached paramedics and yelled 'help her, you've got to come and help her', before telling them he 'just found her like this'. While paramedics were tending to Ms Vlahos, El Jamal fled the scene on foot. The reasoning for firing the shot is not known, the court was told on Friday, and the pistol was never recovered. 'It is disturbing that the firearm has not been recovered and that it remains in the community,' Judge Grant told the court. El Jamal's bail was refused during a hearing in February and he was remanded in custody. He will be eligible for parole in April 2028.
