New Zealand Rugby accuses Ineos of breaching sponsorship agreement

Independent11-02-2025

Manchester United co-owner Ineos has been accused of failing to honour a sponsorship agreement with New Zealand Rugby.
The federation responsible for the All Blacks team says it has launched legal action against the chemicals firm founded by British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe after alleging that the first instalment of 2025 sponsorship money due under a six-year agreement struck in 2021 had not been paid.
It follows the severing of ties between Ineos and Sir Ben Ainslie at the head of its America's Cup sailing team last month.
New Zealand Rugby said in a widely reported statement: 'New Zealand Rugby is disappointed that Ineos has breached its sponsorship agreement.
'Most recently, it failed to pay the first instalment of the 2025 sponsorship, confirming its decision to exit our six-year agreement.
'Having learned of Ineos' decision to walk away three years early, we have moved to protect the interests of New Zealand Rugby and the wider game.
'We have been left with no option but to launch legal proceedings to protect our commercial position. NZR is actively pursuing new commercial opportunities and global interest in the All Blacks and other Teams in Black remains high.'
Ineos has been approached for comment. There is no longer any mention of its All Blacks partnership on the Ineos Sports home page.
Ineos' co-ownership of United has been turbulent to say the least.
The club opted to stand by Erik ten Hag as head coach in the summer but dismissed him last October after a poor start to the season.
Results have failed to improve under his successor Ruben Amorim, and in December it was confirmed Dan Ashworth had left his post as sporting director, having only been in post since July last year.
Sir Dave Brailsford, one of Ratcliffe's key sports advisors at Ineos, is reported to have taken on a more hands-on role at United since Ashworth's exit.
Ineos and Ratcliffe have also drawn criticism over a series of cost-cutting measures they have embarked upon, including a redundancy programme. Fans have also expressed outrage over the mid-season decision to remove concessionary prices for general admission tickets.

Jack Grealish told Man City career is over as bargain asking price revealed

Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish is set to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer in a cut-price deal after falling out of favour under Pep Guardiola in recent seasons Plans to speed up Jack Grealish's exit from Manchester City are underway - with the club willing to take a massive hit to sell him this summer. City will accept a £40million offer for the midfielder who has not been included in the side's Club World Cup squad. The 29-year-old has two years remaining on his contract but has been told he has no future at the Etihad Stadium. Grealish joined City in 2021 for a £100m British record fee and remains the club's most expensive ever signing. ‌ The former Aston Villa talisman played a key role in securing the club's treble in 2023 but has seen his impact wane in recent seasons. Grealish was left out of City's squad on the final day of the season. ‌ And now the club are even willing to take a £60m loss to sell him quickly this summer. Reports suggest Grealish's representatives are actively searching for a new team for their client. After finishing third in the Premier League, City are set to to continue to overhaul their squad having already seen a busy January transfer window. They are now pushing towards signing AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and Lyon forward Rayan Cherki and want both men in time to take to them to the United States. And after Grealish only made seven Premier League starts in 2024/25, Guardiola has accepted that his future may lie at another club. "Of course, Jack has to play," Guardiola said recently. "He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. "He needs to do it - with us or another place. It's a question for Jack, his agent, and the club. "If he stays it will be fine and he fought like he fought from day one to make a contribution." ‌ Guardiola also added: 'It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season. I'm the one who said I want Jack Grealish. With Kevin De Bruyne having already exit, City could also see departures for the likes of Kyle Walker and John Stones in a significant turning point for the team. But the club's turnover is not limited to on the field. Coaches Carlos Vicens, Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez have all departed the club. Lillo and Dominguez have seen their contracts expire, while Vincens has become head coach of Braga.

Judy Murray makes prediction over Andy Murray coaching role ahead of Wimbledon

Judy Murray doesn't believe her son Andy Murray will take up a new coaching role ahead of Wimbledon after his split with Novak Djokovic. Djokovic and Murray announced the end of their partnership last month despite the Serbian previously stating that he hoped to continue working with the British legend through the French Open and Wimbledon this year. Some fans were hoping to see Murray form a dream team with Emma Raducanu but that looks to be unlikely ahead of this year's Championships with Mark Petchey set for a bigger role during the 2025 grass-court swing. Three-time major winner Murray has previously named Raducanu as a player he'd love to coach one day along with British No.1 Jack Draper, Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz and Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas. But his mother Judy doesn't think her son is 'ready to jump straight back into coaching' and suggested he may take some time away from tennis. 'Andy had just retired and wasn't looking to go into coaching but he stepped in because Novak asked him,' she told The Herald. 'When they joined-up, I was certainly interested to see how he got on being on the other side of things and realising how stressful it can be. 'I don't think he's ready to jump straight back into coaching, though, because the tennis circuit is relentless. 'I can see him doing a consultant type role with young players and he's already done a lot of mentoring with the British players on the men's side who are coming through but I can't see him being a full-time tennis coach. 'There's more to life than jumping straight back into the tennis rat race after nearly 20 years as a player. 'I don't think he'll necessarily want to jump back onto that merry-go-round – not when you're someone who's got four kids to taxi around and you want to get your golf handicap to scratch. 'Whether he does it in the future, I don't know – that's for him to answer and I actually don't think he knows the answer either but my guess is not right now.' Since his retirement from tennis after the Olympic Games in Paris last year, Murray has spent lots of time on the golf course. Murray made his Pro-Am debut at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in September, teaming up with fellow Scot Robert MacIntyre. More Trending 'For someone that's not really played that much, I thought he was good,' MacIntyre said about Murray's golfing skills. 'I was very impressed with his game.' Murray regularly posts videos and pictures of himself playing golf across his social media accounts and has become a member at Beaverbrook Golf Club in Surrey. The former world No.1 tennis star signed his first golf equipment deal earlier this year, becoming a brand ambassador for Callaway. Murray, who appeared at this year's French Open for Rafael Nadal's farewell ceremony, could now be set for a golfing reunion with his former Spanish rival. What critics think of F1 movie as they all say same thing about Brad Pitt

Formula 1 fans aren't sure what to expect from the blockbuster summer movie starring 61-year-old Hollywood star Brad Pitt as a driver alongside Britain's Damson Idris The first reviews are in ahead of the hotly-anticipated release of the new Formula 1 movie later this month. There is a lot of hope that the film, starring Brad Pitt, will further boost the popularity of the sport, particularly in the USA. Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, an American former F1 driver who is brought out of retirement by the team owner of APXGP, played by Javier Bardem, to race alongside talented young British starlet Joshua Pearce, portrayed by Damson Idris. ‌ It is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who last teamed up on Top Gun: Maverick. And Lewis Hamilton also served as a producer, providing Hollywood filmmakers with crucial details of what the F1 paddock is really like to help them make the movie as authentic as possible. ‌ Filmed largely on location at real-life races, Hamilton also features on screen alongside his fellow F1 drivers up and down the grid. They were all treated to a special screening of the movie at last month's Monaco Grand Prix and spoke positively about it afterwards. The F1 movie is in cinemas at the end of June, but the first reviews are now in from critics who have been given early access. And everyone who has posted online about it so far seems to have been left very impressed by the finished product. The film has received widespread praise from critics, with the main stars in particular getting positive reactions. That's despite concerns over the casting of 61-year-old Pitt in the lead role, given his age. F1 is an action-packed thrilling look at the world of F1 racing, with lots of grit. The sound, score and cinematography are flawless. Damson Idris and Brad Pitt are great! Absolutely obsessed." ‌ Maude Garrett, from Nerdist, said the film is "so freaking good", adding: "It has all the adrenaline, heart, pacing, story and character that completely fleshes out this movie into excellence. I can only imagine how much more I would love this movie if I was a fan of F1 racing. Maybe I am now?" And Erik Davis, a Rotten Tomatoes contributor, said: "The F1 movie hits the gas and doesn't stop. The races are epic, the sound design, editing, cinematography, performances and music are all top notch. You definitely feel shades of Top Gun: Maverick in that it plays like an old school summer blockbuster. What a ride." For Hamilton, the most important reviews were from his peers as he said: "I really care what the drivers think and I wanted them to think highly of it. I think the great thing is the sound is great, the image is incredible. It's something that's never been done in Formula 1 before, so it's something I'm really proud of."
