Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock win the World Cup of Darts for NI: ‘I'll have a sore head in the morning'

Gurney and Rock defeated Wales 10-9 in Frankfurt in a thrilling final on Sunday night, with Superchin hitting a double eight under enormous pressure to secure Northern Ireland's first team world title.
In the previous set, Gurney had three darts to hit a double five, only to fall short. He put things right in the decisive leg, hitting 180 on route to victory.
Gurney's dramatic eight sparked wild celebrations after a dramatic day of darts that saw Northern Ireland defeat the Republic of Ireland 8-5 in the Quarter-Finals and host nation 8-1 in the Semi-Finals.
The Londonderry man said: 'Josh's power scoring was incredible. All I had to do was finish up
'I might get a fine for this…but whenever I was going for that double five, a wee bit of pooh came flying out.
'But I was never going to miss double eight. I wasn't going to make the same mistake again.
'I have never been so proud of this man and myself. I put this in higher regard than I did winning an individual event.
'This is incredible. I think I will have a sore head in the morning.'
Broughshane's Josh Rock could not hide his emotion, as the strains of Sweet Caroline rang round the packed Frankfurth arena. He produced an incredible performance in the Final, hitting a string of maximums.
He told Sky Sports: 'If you told me the first time that Daryl and I played together that we'd win a World Cup together, I'm not sure I would have believed you.
'I don't think many people expected us to win the World Cup. But we did it.'
Rock, ranked 17th in the world, is optimistic that success in the World Cup will supercharge his individual career.
He explained: 'When it went to the final leg, I said to myself I have to hit a 180 here. I didn't have because, Daryl did it. He was fantastic. Absolutely incredible.
'It's a catalyst for us both. I believe one of us will win a major this year, because the experience of winning this tournament on the big stage in front of the Sky Sports cameras can only help us.
'It's a privilege to represent your country. To make history and to win a World Cup for Northern Ireland is unreal. There will always be a star on our shirt from now on. I'm so proud of that.'

Gurney was keen to congratulate the Welsh pair of Gerwyn Price and Johnny Clayton, who pushed Northern Ireland all the way. They defeated the Netherlands 8-5 in their Semi-Final, after trailing 4-2 at one stage.
He said: 'I would like to say congratulations Gerwyn and Johnny. They're standing here applauding us when many other teams would have left the stage. That shows their class.
'They are two brilliant performers who did their country proud tonight, and could have easily won this.'
The winning pair, playing together for the first time, picked up a cheque for £80,000.

FIFA make Club World Cup judgement despite clear issue during Chelsea match

Only 22,137 fans attended Chelsea's opening Club World Cup match against LAFC at a 71,000 capacity stadium in Atlanta, but FIFA chiefs are confident that the event is a success FIFA bosses regard the Club World Cup as a success despite the low attendances. Chelsea 's opening fixture in the tournament with Los Angeles FC saw only 22,137 fans turn up in the vast Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. They are also braced for more low attendances in other Group matches but were expecting low crowds in certain games despite slashing ticket prices to as low as £38 for general admission. ‌ However, FIFA have already totted up aggregate crowds of more than 250,000 for the tournament and are fully expecting it to catch light in the later rounds with big showdowns lined up. ‌ They saw gates in excess of 60,000 for Inter Miami's opener and 80,000-plus in the Rose Bowl to watch PSG beat Atletico Madrid. Chelsea was a big disappointment on Monday in Atlanta but it was played at 3pm local time on a normal working day and yet there is an expectation they will keep daytime games in next year's World Cup. However, Los Angeles getting through did mean a lower gate because if Mexican side Club America had won that play-off for the final spot there was an expectation they could have sold out the stadium in Atlanta three times over. There has also been decent TV viewing figures with Channel 5 reporting peak audiences in excess of 560,000 even for Bayern Munich 's 10-0 win over Auckland City. ‌ Even though the Chelsea game was a serious blow, FIFA expect the final and semi finals in the 82,500 capacity Met Life Stadium to be a huge attraction. They still see the Club World Cup as a work in progress, it will take time to catch on and to grow. But the feeling is that it has so far been a success rather than a flop despite the stay-away fans and public criticism of players being forced to play too many games. Gareth Southgate targets return to manage national team

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has applied to become the new head coach of Poland's national team, according to reports. The 54-year-old stepped down as England manager last July following his side's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Southgate was linked with replacing Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager in October. However, he ruled out the prospect of making a quick return to management and made it clear he is in 'no rush' to find his next role after his resignation with England. 'I won't coach in the next year for sure, I'm certain of that,' Southgate said in October. 'I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time. 'I'm enjoying my life, so there's no rush. I'm fortunate that there are lots of opportunities presenting themselves.' According to Polish daily newspaper Przeglad Sportowy, Southgate has now submitted an application to become Poland's new head coach. The report adds that Southgate has also 'personally expressed his desire to take over' Poland's national side. Poland are looking for a new head coach following Michal Probierz's resignation last week. The decision came after Robert Lewandowski, Poland's record goalscorer, said he would not play for his country while Probierz is in charge after he was replaced as captain by Piotr Zielinski. 'Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,' Lewandowski said in a statement on social media. 'I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world.' More Trending Probierz opted to step down as Poland's head coach and said in a statement: 'I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach. 'Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour in my life.' Probierz was appointed as Poland's head coach in September 2023 but his side finished bottom of their group at Euro 2024. Poland, who were beaten 2-1 by Finland in their World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, are due to play the Netherlands on September 4. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Wales announce strongest squad in years as young talent returns for huge summer

Wales announce strongest squad in years as young talent returns for huge summer Wales U20s head out to Italy this summer for the World Championships Wales U20s head coach Richard Whiffin (left) with outside-half Harri Wilde (Image: Chris Fairweather/Huw Evans Agency ) Richard Whiffin has named the strongest Wales U20s squad for years to compete in this summer's World Rugby U20s Championship. Wales have been drawn in a tough pool alongside Argentina U20s, France U20s and Spain U20s but there is every reason to believe they can be very competitive in Italy this summer. Whiffin's side impressed during the U20s Six Nations with victories over Italy, Ireland and world champions England. ‌ Outstanding openside flanker Harry Beddall retains the captaincy, while they have also been boosted by the return of powerful Dragons second-row Nick Thomas who missed most of the Six Nations through injury. ‌ There are 10 players based outside of Wales in the squad, including Exeter Chiefs lock Luke Evans who recently changed his allegiance from England to the men in red. The likes of Cardiff wing Tom Bowen, Bristol Bears speedster Aidan Boshoff, centre Steffan Emanuel, props Ioan Emanuel and Sam Scott, along with Scarlets hooker Harry Thomas, are just a few players to watch out for. Wales warmed up for the tournament with a defeat to England at Pontypool Park and a comfortable victory over Italy at the Arms Park. Article continues below 'I think it is a very balanced squad with some quality experience returning from last year and some added emphasis from guys who have performed well during the Six Nations,' said Whiffin. 'We've got a pack that we feel can really deliver at the World Cup and look to be dominant at both the scrum and line-out and as a team we fully understand how we want to play. "We've got some fantastic workrate in our outside backs that will not only get the ball back for us but be a real threat when we've got the ball. 'I think we've seen over the course of the Six Nations and these warm-up games we've got a set of backs that will put us in the right areas of the field and be smart with how we want to play.' Whiffin used more than 40 players in the two warm-up games against world champions England and Italy before finalising his squad for the global tournament where his side start their Pool B fixtures against Argentina before facing France and Spain. ‌ 'Those games allowed us to challenge ourselves in different areas,' explained Whiffin. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free "The England game at Pontypool was always going to be tough on the back of what was a really tough training week and then to challenge ourselves against the world champs was brilliant. 'I thought it cemented a few thoughts in our heads - 14-14 at 60 minutes I thought we had competed well and then we had a very polished performance against Italy - the fact we managed to get 40-plus players game-time over those two games gave the coaches and myself the ammunition we needed to pick the squad. ‌ 'We're excited about the championship but we still have a week's training ahead of us before we get on the plane for Italy but we've done the hard work in terms of whittling down what was a really strong training squad to the 30 selected." But Wales have been dealt a blow with talented scrum-half Logan Franklin and wing Harry Rees-Weldon ruled out of the tournament through injury. Neath scrum-half Ellis Lewis is the only uncapped player in the squad. ‌ 'I think the pleasing thing is the boys are confident and they know they can go out there and compete with so called top teams in the competition and we're not afraid," said Whiffin. "We're going out there saying we want to get into that top semi-final bracket and once you get into that bracket you never know what's going to happen. 'It means we'll need to play well and back those performances up but the boys are confident and we were close last year but didn't get over the line – I think we've proved in the Six nations we can knock over some of those tighter games so hopefully we can see that in the World Cup." Article continues below Wales U20s squad: Ioan Emanuel (Bath), Louie Trevett (Bristol Bears), Harry Thomas (Scarlets), Saul Hurley (Aberavon), Evan Wood (Pontypool), Sam Scott (Bristol Bears), Owain James (Dragons), Jac Pritchard (Scarlets), Luke Evans (Exeter Chiefs), Kenzie Jenkins (Bristol Bears), Nick Thomas (Dragons), Tom Cottle (Cardiff), Dan Gemine (Ospreys), Deian Gwynne (Gloucester), Harry Beddall (Dragons - Captain), Caio James (Gloucester), Evan Minto (Dragons), Sion Davies (Cardiff), Ellis Lewis (Neath), Harri Wilde (Cardiff), Harri Ford (Dragons), Steffan Emanuel (Cardiff), Elis Price (Scarlets), Elijah Evans (Cardiff), Osian Roberts (Sale Sharks), Osian Darwin-Lewis (Cardiff), Aidan Boshoff (Bristol Bears), Lewis Edwards (Ospreys), Jack Woods (Bath), Tom Bowen (Cardiff).
