Police shut down bogus initiation school, owner (51) arrested
Mamelodi East police have successfully shut down a bogus initiation school and arrested a 51-year-old man on charges of Contravention of the Customary Initiation Act earlier this week.
Police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong said during the arrest last Saturday, 10 boys aged between 11 and 17 were at the school.
She said the initiates were given medical attention and then taken to their families.
Khulong said the arrest came after a parent had complained that her son had been accepted into an initiation school without her completing a consent form.
The complaint was submitted to the Gauteng Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) under the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA).
Khulong said a representative of CoGTA received information, and the representatives of the PICC located the school in Mamelodi East.
She said the delegation discovered that the school is not on the official list of approved winter initiation schools in the province as published by the CoGTA.
She said the suspect could not produce the relevant documentation that is required for the school to operate.
'The PICC representatives informed the suspect that the initiation school was operating illegally and took the complainant's son home,' she said.
Khulong said that because of the seriousness of the incident, the PICC representatives reported the matter to Mamelodi East police, who apprehended the suspect on May 21.
She said the rescued initiates were given medical attention.
Mamelodi East police station commander Brigadier Terence Naidoo applauded the collaborative effort between the CoGTA and police.
Naidoo highlighted that this is a period in which different communities around the country observe their customary practices through initiation.
He said as much as culture is sacred and different practices are respected, they should still be conducted within the bounds of the law and also put the well-being of initiates first.
He indicated that the arrest sends a stern warning to all schools that police will stop at nothing to protect lives in the communities.

Missing: Help police find two Mamelodi residents
Police have asked people to help them locate two unrelated missing persons from Mamelodi. They are Phillemon Duke Mahlangu (63) from Mamelodi East and Thabo Paulos Phasha (37) from Skierlik informal settlement. Police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong said the two went missing on different dates. Mahlangu was last seen on January 14. He was wearing a brown hat and brown jacket in the last picture he was taken. Khulong said Mahlangu's son reported him missing, saying he was with his father in the Pretoria CBD the same day he went missing, as they had not seen each other in a long time. 'After picking him up, they travelled to Mamelodi East and spent the day together. When they parted ways, the victim requested the complainant to drop him off at Tshwane College. That was the last time he saw him,' said Khulong. The son said they continued speaking on the phone until February, when Mahlangu's phone began going to voicemail. He has made attempts to look for his father, but he has not been found ever since. Thabo Paulos Phasha (37) from Skierlik in Mamelodi East was last seen on June 3. His mother reported him missing. According to the information received from her, she received a call from her neighbour on June 7, indicating that she had not seen Phasha in three days. Khulong said the mother claimed she left her home on May 19 and had left the victim at their place of residence. Upon her return, she enquired with one of the neighbours if they had not seen Phasha. The neighbour informed her that she last saw him at the railway line, and that he did not seem to be in good health. Phasha was last seen wearing a black jersey, black trousers and black sandals, carrying a black laptop bag. Woman still missing 4 months on, search continues
The search for Bongi Phahlamohlaka, who has been missing for about four months, is still continuing. The 26-year-old from Bridgeview informal settlement, Nellmapius, was last seen on February 28. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Isaac Mcunu said the investigations were still ongoing, but police required the community's help in locating the woman. Mcunu said she was reported missing by her sister, Phumzile, on March 1. Phumzile said she last saw Bongi returning from a visit with her mother, wearing a long brown dress, a black T-shirt and a sky-blue blazer. She said they called her on her cellphone to check if she arrived home safely, but it was off. Phumzile said at the time she didn't think much of it because Bongi lives in an area prone to power outages. She said she had assumed her cellphone battery had died and she couldn't charge it. 'We were hoping to see her on Sunday when she comes to church, but she never arrived. 'We went to her place to search for her and asked neighbours about her whereabouts, but they last saw her on February 28,' said Phumzile. She said with the help of neighbours, they forced the door open, but Bongi was nowhere to be found, and everything looked fine inside. Mcunu said police have already started investigating leads. The family said they searched almost everywhere for her without luck.
